Berlin's twentieth century in three acts, then the city that grew out of it: day one walks the ground the Gestapo and the Wall both stood on and ends in the Reichstag dome after dark; day two takes the Unter den Linden axis and Museum Island; day three follows the Wall itself from the Bernauer Straße memorial to the East Side Gallery, with a GDR-everyday museum and a 1930s currywurst kiosk in between. Day four leaves the history spine for Kreuzberg and Neukölln — market hall, canal, the runways of Tempelhof, a rooftop over Karl-Marx-Straße. Berlin is unusually generous to a mid-range budget because the heaviest sites are free: Topography of Terror, the Holocaust Memorial, the Wall Memorial, the Jewish Museum's core exhibition and the Reichstag dome all cost nothing. Two hard scheduling rules: book the Reichstag dome weeks ahead (2–3 months in peak season), and put days 2, 3 and 4 on Tuesday–Saturday — Monday closes the museums and Sunday closes Konnopke's and Markthalle Neun.

Day 1 — Terror, memory, and the divided centreTerror, memory, and the divided centre

10:00
Topography of Terror
sight · 90 min · free · Topographie des Terrors, Niederkirchnerstraße 8, Berlin
Topographie des Terrors, Niederkirchnerstraße 8, Berlin
Free, no timed ticket needed, open daily 10:00–20:00 (closed 24 and 31 Dec and 1 Jan). The Gestapo and SS headquarters stood on this plot; the indoor documentation centre covers the apparatus of the regime, the outdoor trench exhibition covers Berlin 1933–1945, and a 200 m stretch of the Berlin Wall runs along the Niederkirchnerstraße edge — the two dictatorships literally stacked on one site. Free English tours of the indoor exhibition Sat/Sun at 15:30, meet at the foyer desk 15 minutes early. Start here: it frames everything else.
11:45
Checkpoint Charlie
sight · 30 min · free
Checkpoint Charlie, Friedrichstraße 43-45, Berlin
Free, open 24h, eight minutes' walk east. Be honest about what this is: the guardhouse is a replica, the 'soldiers' who pose for photos are costumed, and the surrounding souvenir stands are the tackiest corner of Mitte. Go anyway for the open-air panel exhibition along Friedrichstraße, which is genuinely good on the 1961 US–Soviet tank standoff, and for the sense of how narrow the crossing actually was. Twenty minutes is enough; skip the paid private museum unless you want a deep dive on escape attempts.
12:30
Sale e Tabacchi
food · 75 min · €28
Sale e Tabacchi, Rudi-Dutschke-Straße 25, Berlin
Long-running Italian in the courtyard of the taz newspaper building, five minutes from Checkpoint Charlie on a street named for the 1968 student leader. Pasta and secondi roughly €18–30; the shaded courtyard is the reason to come in summer. Restaurant Guru 4.8 (2,300+ reviews) and OpenTable 4.5, though Tripadvisor sits lower at 3.9 — the split is mostly about service pace, so don't come in a hurry. Kitchen runs through the afternoon, which is rare in this area.
NOTE · field note · open daily 12:00–01:00 with the kitchen to 23:00 at Rudi-Dutschke-Straße 25 — address and hours fine, the 12:30 stop is safe. — checked 2026-08-15

14:15
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
sight · 90 min · free · Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas, Cora-Berliner-Straße 1, Berlin
Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas, Cora-Berliner-Straße 1, Berlin
Free. The field of 2,711 steles is open around the clock; the underground Information Centre beneath it is open Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00 and closed Mondays (it was shut for renovation 12 Jan–30 Apr 2026 and has since reopened). Walk into the middle of the field before you read anything — the ground falls away and the blocks rise over your head, and that disorientation is the work. Then go down: the Room of Names reads out victims' biographies one at a time, and reading the whole list aloud would take about six and a half years. Allow a quiet hour below ground.
16:00
Brandenburg Gate and Pariser Platz
sight · 30 min · free · Brandenburger Tor, Pariser Platz, Berlin
Brandenburger Tor, Pariser Platz, Berlin
Free, open 24h, three minutes north of the memorial. From 1961 to 1989 the Gate stood inside the death strip and nobody on either side could reach it — the photographs of crowds on the Wall in November 1989 were taken right here. Busiest late morning; by late afternoon the square thins out. The Room of Silence in the north gatehouse is a free, genuinely quiet two-minute escape.
16:45
Soviet War Memorial in the Tiergarten
sight · 30 min · free · Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Tiergarten, Straße des 17. Juni, Berlin
Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Tiergarten, Straße des 17. Juni, Berlin
Free, open 24h, five minutes west along Straße des 17. Juni. Built in 1945 from stone taken out of Hitler's ruined Reich Chancellery, and flanked by two of the first Soviet tanks into the city. It ended up on the western side of the line, so West Berlin spent forty years guarding a Soviet monument — the strangest artefact of the divided city, and almost always empty of tourists.
18:00
Ständige Vertretungbook ahead
food · 90 min · €32book ahead
Ständige Vertretung, Schiffbauerdamm 8, Berlin
Twenty minutes' walk north along the Spree. Named after the West German permanent mission to East Berlin and hung wall-to-wall with Bonn-republic political photographs — Rhineland cooking and Kölsch beer in a room that is itself a Cold War exhibit. Mains €14–30; Restaurant Guru 4.4 (9,400+ reviews), Google 4.6, Tripadvisor 4.1. Open daily from noon; the riverside terrace is the summer seat. Reserve if you want the terrace, and eat before the dome slot rather than after.

Reichstag Building domebook ahead
sight · 60 min · free · Reichstagsgebäude, Platz der Republik 1, Berlinbook ahead
Reichstagsgebäude, Platz der Republik 1, Berlin
Free but registration is mandatory and the single most important booking of this trip: 2–3 months ahead May–Sep, 4–6 weeks in spring and autumn, 2–3 weeks in winter. Book through the Bundestag visitor service, not a reseller. You must carry the exact ID document you registered with, and the name and number must match. Open daily 08:00–24:00, last entry 21:45, admission in 15-minute slots; closed for maintenance on scattered dates each year, listed on the official site. An evening slot is the right call — Foster's glass dome spirals up over a lit city, and the free audio guide triggers by position as you climb.

Day 2 — Museum Island and the Unter den Linden axisMuseum Island and the Unter den Linden axis

10:00
Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama
sight · 60 min · €12
Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama, Am Kupfergraben 2, Berlin
€12 standalone, or €24 for the combined Museumsinsel + Panorama ticket that also covers the Neues Museum below and the rest of the island — buy the €24 version, it pays for itself on this day alone. Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays. Important: the Pergamonmuseum itself is shut for structural renovation until 4 July 2027, so the altar is not viewable; this purpose-built rotunda next door shows Yadegar Asisi's 360° panorama of Pergamon in AD 129 plus original sculpture from the collection. Come at opening — the viewing platform is small.
€12
11:15
Neues Museum
sight · 120 min · €12
Neues Museum, Bodestraße 1-3, Berlin
€14 alone, or covered by the €24 combined ticket bought at the previous stop. Tue/Wed/Fri–Sun 10:00–18:00, Thu to 20:00, closed Mondays. The Nefertiti bust is in Room 210 and is busy all day, so go straight up and see her first. The building is half the point: bombed to a shell in 1943, left as a ruin for sixty years, and rebuilt by David Chipperfield in 2009 with every scar, shrapnel hole and stump of fresco left visible rather than restored — a 20th-century argument about memory disguised as an Egyptian museum.

13:30
Nante-Eck
food · 75 min · €24
Nante-Eck, Unter den Linden 35, Berlin
Twelve minutes west along Unter den Linden, at the Friedrichstraße corner. Old-Berlin dishes — Eisbein, schnitzel, Königsberger Klopse — in a turn-of-the-century salon room; mains €15–25. Restaurant Guru 4.5 (7,900 reviews), Google 4.6, Tripadvisor 4.0. It is squarely on the tourist axis and the service can be brusque, but the kitchen is honest and it is the only sensible sit-down lunch on this stretch. Open daily from 11:00.
NOTE · field note · open at Unter den Linden 35 daily 09:00–24:00, so the 13:30 stop is never a problem. — checked 2026-08-15

15:00
Neue Wache and the Bebelplatz book-burning memorial
sight · 45 min · free · Neue Wache, Unter den Linden 4, Berlin
Neue Wache, Unter den Linden 4, Berlin
Both free, both outdoors or open-door, both on the walk back east. Neue Wache holds a single enlarged Kollwitz pietà under an open oculus, exposed to rain and snow — Germany's central memorial to the victims of war and tyranny, and it works because there is nothing else in the room. Two minutes on is Bebelplatz, where the Nazi student union burned 20,000 books in May 1933: look down through the glass plate set into the cobbles at Micha Ullman's underground room of empty white shelves, sized for exactly that many volumes. Easy to walk straight past — the plate is unmarked, in the middle of the square.
16:00
Berliner Dom
sight · 60 min · €10
Berliner Dom, Am Lustgarten, Berlin
€10 adult, or €19 with the museum and audio guide; one adult ticket admits up to three under-18s free. Mon–Fri 09:00–18:00 (to 19:00 Jun–Aug), Sat to 17:00, Sun from 12:00; last admission 60 minutes before close and the dome walkway shuts 40 minutes before. The Hohenzollern crypt reopened in March 2026 after a long renovation. Climb the 270 steps: the dome gallery looks straight down the axis you have just walked, with the TV Tower on one side and the rebuilt Stadtschloss on the other.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: the stop charges €10 (€19 with museum and audio guide). — checked 2026-08-15

17:30
DDR Museum
sight · 90 min · €14
DDR Museum, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 1, Berlin
€14 adult (€8 reduced), open daily 09:00–21:00 including public holidays — the one major museum here that is open on Mondays and late, which makes it the right end-of-day filler. Directly across the Spree from the cathedral. Hands-on to a fault: sit in a Trabant, open the wardrobes, listen in on a bugged flat. It is more entertaining than rigorous and it gets crowded and loud, so treat it as the light course between the cathedral and dinner — day 3 does GDR daily life properly and for free.

Zur letzten Instanzbook ahead
food · 90 min · €35book ahead
Zur letzten Instanz, Waisenstraße 14-16, Berlin
Berlin's oldest restaurant, serving since 1621 in a lane behind the medieval city wall — twelve minutes' walk east past Alexanderplatz. Eisbein, Klopse and Berliner Weisse under low beams and a tiled corner stove; mains €18–28. Napoleon and Beethoven are both claimed as guests, which may or may not be true, but the 1963 rebuild after wartime destruction is real. Reserve — the dining rooms are tiny. Per the restaurant's own site: closed Sundays, Mondays from 17:30 only, Tue–Sat 12:00–15:00 and from 17:30. Several third-party listings wrongly show Monday or Wednesday as the closing day — trust the official hours.
NOTE · field note · open at Waisenstraße 14–16 with a SPLIT SERVICE the stop does not mention — Mon, Tue and Thu–Sat 12:00–15:00 then from 17:30, Wednesday from 17:00 only — which the 19:30 stop clears on every day it trades. — checked 2026-08-15

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
