Budapest is two cities that were only stitched together in 1873, so this itinerary treats them that way: a flat Pest day walking north to south along the river, a Buda day taken along the hill ridge from the castle down to the Danube, and a third day through the Jewish Quarter and up Andrássy. Each of the last two ends in a thermal bath, which is the correct order of operations — Rudas and its rooftop pool over the Danube after the Buda hills, Széchenyi's floodlit outdoor pools after the long Pest walk. Gellért, the bath most guides still lead with, closed on 1 October 2025 for a renovation running to 2028; do not plan around it. Two money notes. Parliament tickets are 7,000 HUF for EEA citizens and 14,000 for everyone else — a genuine two-tier price, sold only through the official jegymester.hu partner, and gone one to three weeks ahead. And at Széchenyi, pay at the cashier in forints: the bath's own euro-denominated online tickets run €46–56 against a 13,200 HUF gate price, which is roughly a third more for the privilege of a QR code. Run this Tuesday to Friday. Sunday closes the Great Market Hall and two of the three dinners here, Saturday closes the synagogue for Shabbat, and Rudas keeps a gender-segregated schedule that makes Tuesday women-only and Wednesday men-only in its historic Turkish bath.

Országház, Kossuth Lajos tér 1-3, Budapest
7,000 HUF for EEA citizens, 14,000 HUF for non-EEA, a two-tier price that took effect on 1 January 2026 — you will be asked for a passport or ID matching the ticket you bought, so buy the right one. Interiors are accessible only on a guided tour, roughly 45 minutes, and advance tickets come only from the official partner, jegymester.hu/parlament; slots routinely sell out one to three weeks ahead in season and the resellers filling the top of every search result charge two to four times these figures for the same tour. What you see: the 96-metre dome, the Holy Crown of St Stephen under guard, and the grand staircase with its 691 rooms' worth of neo-gothic excess — the building was finished in 1902 for a country that was about to lose two-thirds of its territory. Security screening at the Kossuth tér visitor centre; arrive 20 minutes before your slot.

Shoes on the Danube Bank
sight · 25 min · free
Shoes on the Danube Bank, Id. Antall József rakpart, Budapest
Free, always open, five minutes south of Parliament along the embankment. Sixty pairs of iron shoes cast in 1940s styles and bolted to the stone at the water's edge, where Arrow Cross militiamen shot Jewish Budapesters into the river in the winter of 1944–45 — they were made to remove their shoes first, because shoes had value. There is no ticket, no barrier and no explanation beyond three small plaques. It takes ten minutes and it is the reason day 3 of this itinerary exists. Go before the tour groups at 11:00, and note the memorial sits on an open quay with traffic behind it: not a place you linger long in bad weather.
11:30
St Stephen's Basilica
sight · 75 min · HUF 6,800 · Szent István-bazilika, Szent István tér 1, Budapest
Szent István-bazilika, Szent István tér 1, Budapest
6,800 HUF for the combined ticket — church hall, treasury and panorama terrace — against 2,600 HUF for the hall alone and 5,000 for terrace plus treasury, so the combination is the one that makes sense if you intend to go up. Church hall Mon–Sat 09:00–18:00 and Sunday 13:00–18:00 (mornings are for mass); the terrace and treasury run daily 09:00–19:00. There is a lift most of the way up the dome and then a short stair, and the terrace is a full 360° ring — the best cheap panorama in Pest, with Parliament, the Buda hills and the whole grid at once. Inside, the reliquary of St Stephen's right hand is displayed in a side chapel and is exactly as odd as that sounds. Shoulders and knees covered.

Hungarikum Bisztró, Steindl Imre u. 13, Budapest
Tripadvisor 4.7 across 11,300+ reviews at around #96 of 3,618, and 4.7 on Google across 9,400 — the highest-rated food stop in this itinerary and, unusually for somewhere three minutes from Parliament, not a trap. Hungarian home cooking at the classics: gulyás served in a kettle, chicken paprikash with nokedli, duck leg with red cabbage, mains roughly 5,000–9,000 HUF. There is live accordion and violin in the evenings, which is either the charm or the reason to come at lunch. It is small and booked solid — reserve, days ahead for dinner — and the queue outside at 19:00 is people who did not.

sight · 75 min · HUF 2,500 · Nagy Vásárcsarnok, Vámház körút 1-3, Budapest
Nagy Vásárcsarnok, Vámház körút 1-3, Budapest
Free to enter; budget 2,000–3,000 HUF if you eat upstairs. Be warned on the reviews before you build expectations: it sits at 3.6 on Tripadvisor on both its attraction and its restaurant listing, and the dominant complaint is that it is an overpriced tourist bazaar and that Budapest has better working food markets (Hold utca and Rakoczi ter among them). It is on this itinerary for the 1897 building and for provisioning, not as a meal — day 1 eats at Hungarikum Bisztro. Open Mon 06:00–17:00, Tue–Fri 06:00–18:00, Sat 06:00–15:00, closed Sundays and public holidays — one of the reasons this itinerary avoids Sunday. Eiffel-workshop ironwork and Zsolnay roof tiles from 1897, three floors: produce and butchers at ground level, and upstairs a gallery of hot-food counters doing lángos, sausage and stuffed cabbage. Be clear-eyed about the two halves — the ground floor is where Hungarians buy paprika, salami and Tokaji at ordinary prices, while the upstairs gallery and the souvenir stalls are priced for the cruise crowd. Buy paprika downstairs in a tin rather than a decorated cloth bag, and check whether it says csípős (hot) or édes (sweet) before you commit.

Danube promenade and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge
sight · 90 min · free · Széchenyi lánchíd, Budapest
Széchenyi lánchíd, Budapest
Free. Walk north from the market along the Pest embankment — past the Vigadó, the Gresham Palace and the row of terraces at Vörösmarty tér — to the Chain Bridge, which reopened in 2023 after a full reconstruction and is now closed to through traffic, so you can stand in the middle of it. This is the walk that explains the geography: Buda's hill and castle on one side, Pest's flat nineteenth-century wall of facades on the other, and the two only permanently joined since this bridge opened in 1849. Come back after dark if you can — Parliament, the castle and the bridges are all lit, and it is the single best free thing in the city. A river cruise sold along here runs 6,000–10,000 HUF and is pleasant but buys you a view you already have.

Fisherman's Bastion

Halászbástya, Szentháromság tér, Budapest
1,700 HUF for the upper terrace — and the main terrace and lower walkways are free, year-round, which is the thing nobody tells you. The paid section buys a slightly higher vantage point and a shorter queue for the same view; if the budget is tight, skip it without regret. Neo-romanesque, finished in 1902, and named for the fishermen's guild that defended this stretch of wall. Be here at 09:00: this is the most photographed spot in Hungary and by 10:30 the turrets are a queue. From the terrace you get the whole Pest panorama with Parliament dead centre across the water. Getting up: the Várbusz 16 from Széll Kálmán tér, the funicular from Clark Ádám tér (a short ride and a long queue), or a 15-minute climb from Batthyány tér.

sight · 60 min · HUF 3,400 · Mátyás-templom, Szentháromság tér 2, Budapest
Mátyás-templom, Szentháromság tér 2, Budapest
3,400 HUF adult, with the upstairs museum and the royal oratory included. Open Mon–Fri 09:00–17:00, Sat only 09:00–13:00 and Sun only 13:00–17:00 — the weekend hours are short enough to break a plan, which is another reason to run this itinerary midweek. Thirty seconds' walk from the Bastion. The exterior is the famous part — the diamond-patterned Zsolnay tile roof — but the interior is the surprise: Frigyes Schulek's 1890s restoration covered every surface in Byzantine-influenced geometric painting, closer to a mosque than a cathedral, which is not an accident given the building spent 150 years as one under Ottoman rule. Two Habsburg coronations happened here, including Franz Joseph's in 1867. Tours and concerts occasionally close it; check the day's schedule.

Hungarian National Gallery, Buda Castle
sight · 120 min · HUF 5,800 · Magyar Nemzeti Galéria, Szent György tér 2, Budapest
Magyar Nemzeti Galéria, Szent György tér 2, Budapest
5,800 HUF for the permanent exhibitions, audio guide 1,200 HUF extra; closed Mondays. The castle's own grounds — the Lion Courtyard, the ramparts, the Turul statue and the cobbled lanes between here and the Bastion — are free and open around the clock, so walking the castle district costs nothing and only the interiors are ticketed. The gallery is the case for going inside: Hungarian art from gothic altarpieces to the nineteenth-century national painters, and above all Mihály Munkácsy's vast canvases and the Károly Ferenczy and József Rippl-Rónai rooms — a school almost nobody arrives knowing, which is what makes it worth two hours rather than one. The domed hall's upper level also gives a Danube view for free with your ticket.

Stand25 Bisztró, Attila út 10, Budapest
Michelin Bib Gourmand, awarded within a year of opening, from the team behind the two-star Stand Étterem; Tripadvisor 4.2 at around #419 of 3,626. Ten minutes downhill from the castle on the west side, at Attila út 10 — not inside the castle district, which is exactly why it is priced like a bistro and not like a view. Open Mon–Sat 12:00–16:00 and 17:30–24:00, closed Sundays. Hungarian classics cooked properly rather than reinvented — the goose leg, the túrógombóc — with French-Mediterranean technique underneath; a two-course lunch runs roughly 8,000–12,000 HUF, which for this kitchen is the bargain of the trip. Reserve.

Citadella and the Liberty Statue, Gellért Hill
sight · 105 min · free · Citadella, Gellérthegy, Budapest
Citadella, Gellérthegy, Budapest
Free — and new. The Citadella reopened in spring 2026 after eleven years closed (sources give the date as either late March or early April), so most guidebooks and half the internet still describe it as derelict and fenced. The Habsburgs built the fortress in 1854 to point its guns at the city that had just rebelled against them; it is now an open public park inside the walls, with lookout terraces, new walking routes and a paid exhibition in the western rondella. Above it stands the 1947 Liberty Statue, and the view is the best in Budapest — the whole Danube bend, both banks, every bridge. Getting here from Attila út is a genuine 30–40 minute uphill walk through the wooded paths of Gellért Hill; bus 27 from Móricz Zsigmond körtér drops you near the top if you would rather not climb. Then it is all downhill to the bath.
18:00
Rudas Baths
sight · 150 min · HUF 12,000 · Rudas Gyógyfürdő, Döbrentei tér 9, Budapest
Rudas Gyógyfürdő, Döbrentei tér 9, Budapest
Around 12,000 HUF for a weekday day ticket, more at weekends — check rudasfurdo.hu before you go, because these prices move more than once a year (the figure here was checked on 2026-07-25 and the official price page blocks automated reading, so treat it as approximate). Open daily 06:00–22:00, with night bathing Friday and Saturday 22:00–03:00 at a higher rate. At the foot of Gellért Hill by Elisabeth Bridge, ten minutes downhill from the Citadella. Two things are worth the money: the original Ottoman bath of 1550, an octagonal pool under a domed roof pierced with coloured glass, and the modern rooftop panorama pool looking straight up the Danube at Parliament. The Turkish section runs a gender-segregated schedule — Tuesday is women-only and Wednesday men-only, weekends are mixed all day, and weekday mornings are usually men-only until around 11:00. Sources disagree on the exact hours, so a mixed couple should confirm the day before committing. Bring flip-flops and a towel; towel rental is no longer included in the standard ticket. Under-14s are not admitted to the thermal pools.

ZONA Budapest, Lánchíd u. 7-9, Budapest
Tripadvisor 4.5 across 936 reviews, and Gault&Millau Hungary rates the kitchen 17/20 with three chef's hats. A ten-minute walk north along the Buda embankment from Rudas, below the castle and a few steps from the Chain Bridge, with windows framing the river and the lit-up Pest facades — which is the right way to end a day that started on the hill above it. Contemporary Hungarian under chef Levente Kovács: mains broadly 8,000–16,000 HUF, with tasting options if you want the full version. It keeps late hours, so a 20:45 table after the bath is normal rather than awkward. Reserve, and ask for a window.
