Four days built around the one thing that decides everything here: the weather on the mountain. Day 1 goes up Table Mountain at opening and then walks the two neighbourhoods below it that explain the city, Bo-Kaap and District Six. Day 2 is Robben Island and the harbour it sails from. Day 3 is a hired car down the peninsula to Cape Point and the penguins. Day 4 is the botanical garden and the oldest wine estate in the country, ending on the Atlantic seafront. The single most useful piece of planning: the cableway shuts in high wind or low cloud, sometimes for days, so treat day 1 as a swap and go up on the first clear morning you get, whichever day that is. Check the Cableway's own status page before you leave your room. Two closure rules fix which weekday you should land on. District Six Museum and the Bo-Kaap Museum both shut on Sundays, Bo-Kaap Kombuis shuts on Mondays and does no Sunday dinner, and the Pot Luck Club does no Sunday dinner either, so start this trip on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and all four days fall clear. Prices are 2026 foreign-visitor rates in rand, checked 2 August 2026. South African and SADC residents pay a great deal less at almost every gate here, often less than half, so if that is you, budget from the local column instead. Come between October and April. If you must come in winter, check the maintenance calendars first: the cableway closed 27 July to 9 August in 2026 and the Cape Point funicular from 20 July to 31 August, and both shut for roughly the same fortnight every year. Days 3 and 4 assume a hired car. Days 1 and 2 do not, and Uber and Bolt both work well in the city bowl and at the Waterfront.

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Lower Station, Tafelberg Road
Be on the first cars of the day. Two things happen after about 10:00: the queue at the lower station turns into an hour, and the tablecloth cloud rolls in over the front table and takes the view with it. A return ticket is about 475 rand booked online and about 530 rand at the ticket office, so book online the night before once you have seen the forecast. The critical habit is checking the Cableway's own status page or social feed before you set off, because it closes in high wind with no notice and the closure can run several days. If it is shut, move this to whichever morning is clear and bring day 2 forward. Up top, walk the Dassie and Agama trails, both flat, signposted and about 20 minutes each, rather than only standing at the upper station railing. Wind at the summit runs 10 degrees colder than the car park in any season.
NOTE · field note · the 2026-08-02 blocker has CLEARED: the annual maintenance shutdown ran 27 July to 9 August 2026 and the cableway reopened on 10 August, so it is running today. — checked 2026-08-15

Bo-Kaap Museum
sight · 45 min · ZAR 100
Bo-Kaap Museum, 71 Wale Street
Ten minutes down Kloof Nek from the cableway. The painted houses on Wale and Chiappini Street are the picture everybody takes, and this small museum in an 18th-century house is what makes them mean something: the quarter was built for enslaved and freed people brought to the Cape from Indonesia, Malaysia, India and East Africa, and their descendants still live in these streets. Open 09:00 to 16:00 Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays, about 100 rand for international visitors and 60 rand for South Africans under the Iziko rates that took effect on 1 April 2026. This is a residential neighbourhood before it is a photo location: do not shoot through windows, do not sit on doorsteps to pose, and ask before photographing anyone.

Atlas Trading Company
sight · 30 min · ZAR 60
Atlas Trading Company, 94 Wale Street
Two doors along: a spice shop that has been weighing out cumin, cardamom and its own masala blends since 1946, and which Cape Town chefs actually shop at. Ask for the Cape Malay curry blend and the roasted masala. Sold by weight in paper bags for very little, which is why the estimate here is a token 60 rand rather than a real price. Cash is easiest. Hours are the thing to get right: 08:15 to 17:15 Monday to Thursday, 08:30 to 13:00 on Saturday, closed all day Sunday, and on Friday it shuts from 12:00 to 14:00 for prayers, so an 11:45 arrival on a Friday buys you a quarter of an hour.
NOTE · field note · ADDRESS: two current business listings give Atlas Trading at 104 WALE STREET, while the stop's location name says 94 Wale Street. — checked 2026-08-15

Truth Coffee Roasting, 36 Buitenkant Street
A working roastery on Buitenkant Street done out as a Victorian steam engine, with the roaster running in the middle of the room. The coffee is the reason to come and the breakfast plates and sandwiches served all day are the reason it works as lunch. Check the closing time for your date rather than trusting a listing: the published hours disagree with each other, with one giving 06:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and another 07:00 to 22:00, and only the early opening and the shorter Sunday are agreed on by both. A 13:00 lunch is safe under either. No booking, and the queue at the door moves. Three minutes' walk from the next stop, which is why it is here.

District Six Museum, 25A Buitenkant Street
The counterweight to the morning. District Six was a mixed inner-city neighbourhood of about 60,000 people, declared white in 1966, bulldozed, and still largely empty ground you can see from the door. The museum is run partly by former residents and the floor is a hand-annotated street map they wrote their own addresses onto. Ask at the desk whether an ex-resident guide is available, which is what turns this from a room of objects into the best hour of the trip. About 45 rand, 09:00 to 16:00 Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays, and tickets must be registered online through Quicket in advance rather than bought at the door. Come with time, not on the way to something else.

Kloof Street House, 30 Kloof Street
Dinner in a Victorian house up on Kloof Street: several small dining rooms, a garden strung with lights, a proper bar and live music most evenings. Around 4.4 on Google and 4.3 on Tripadvisor across roughly 2,600 reviews, which for a place this atmospheric is unusually solid. Book, and ask for the garden if the evening is warm. Kloof Street is walkable and busy at night, which is not true of much of the city bowl after dark, so take an Uber back rather than walking east.

Robben Island Museumbook ahead

Nelson Mandela Gateway, V&A Waterfront
Take the 09:00 ferry, the first of the day, and check in at the Nelson Mandela Gateway by 08:30. Take the first one for a practical reason as well as a quiet one: sailings are cancelled in heavy seas and the cancellation rate climbs through the day, so the 09:00 is the crossing most likely to run and it leaves the rest of the afternoon intact if it does not. The whole thing is about four hours door to door: 30 to 40 minutes each way by boat, a bus tour of the island, and the maximum security prison walked with a former political prisoner as your guide. Go in knowing which half is which. It rates 4.5 on Google across roughly 4,400 reviews but only 4.0 on Tripadvisor across roughly 8,800, and the complaint that recurs is the bus half, which is a fixed circuit narrated to a schedule and can feel rushed and formulaic. The hour inside the prison with someone who was held there is what people rate highly and it is the reason to go. About 600 rand for non-South Africans and 400 rand for South Africans, all in. Book directly on the museum's own site weeks ahead, months ahead between December and March, and treat any other seller as a reseller. Departures are 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 from September to April, and 09:00, 11:00 and 13:00 only from May to August. The boat is exposed and the sea between here and the island is rough more often than not.
NOTE · field note · PRICE re-confirmed exactly: R600 for non-South African adults and R310 for non-SA children aged 2-18, all in — ferry, island bus and prison tour — matching the stop to the rand. — checked 2026-08-15

Willoughby & Co
food · 75 min · ZAR 320
Willoughby & Co, Victoria Wharf, V&A Waterfront
Late lunch five minutes from the ferry gate. It looks like nothing, because it is a counter and a handful of tables inside a shopping centre, and it is nonetheless one of the best-regarded seafood and sushi kitchens in the city at 4.4 on Tripadvisor across more than 4,300 reviews and ranked in the top 40 of nearly 900 restaurants in central Cape Town. No reservations, so put your name down and wait, which after four hours on a boat is not a hardship. Order the sashimi and whatever line fish is on the board.

Zeitz MOCAA
sight · 120 min · ZAR 250
Zeitz MOCAA, Silo District, South Arm Road
The largest museum of contemporary African art anywhere, cut out of a 1920s grain silo by Thomas Heatherwick, who carved a cathedral of tubes through the middle of it. The building is worth the ticket on its own and the collection is the argument for the continent's living artists rather than its antiquities. About 250 rand, open 10:00 to 18:00 daily with last entry at 17:30, and under-18s go free. African citizens with an ID or African passport enter free every Wednesday between 10:00 and 13:00, and everyone pays half price from 16:00 on the first Friday of the month. Nine floors, so start at the top and walk down. If you finish early, the Watershed craft market next door is a five-minute walk and costs nothing to look at.

The Pot Luck Club, Top Floor, The Silo, Old Biscuit Mill, 375 Albert Road, Woodstock
Fifteen minutes east into Woodstock, up a goods lift to the top of a grain silo, for small sharing plates and a 360-degree view. Two dinner sittings, 18:00 and 20:30; the 18:00 one catches the light on the mountain, which is the whole point of the room. Lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday, brunch only on Sunday, closed Monday. Book as far ahead as you can, weeks rather than days, because both sittings fill. The menu is priced per head rather than by the plate: about 550 rand for six plates and 795 for eight, and the six-plate figure is what this stop budgets for. Practical, not paranoid: Woodstock is an industrial neighbourhood that empties after dark, so take an Uber to the door and order another from inside rather than walking out to look for one.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
