Four days that leave the coast behind and follow the Douro upstream by train, into the oldest demarcated wine region on earth. The line is the plan: two nights in Peso da Régua for the valley museum, the Galafura balcony and Lamego's 686-step staircase, then the 25 minutes of track between Régua and Pinhão that are the most beautiful in Portugal, a night in Pinhão, and three working quintas where the tasting happens among the terraces that made the wine rather than in a cellar downriver. No car is needed and none is budgeted; taxis cover the four short hops the train cannot. Two things shape when you come. The vindima runs roughly 10 September to 5 October, when the lagares open for foot treading and Régua throws its harvest festival on 13 to 15 September 2026 — book quintas and beds three months out for that window. And July and August routinely pass 38 °C in this schist gorge, which is why this is written for spring and autumn. Watch three closures: Caves da Raposeira opens weekdays only, the restaurant at Quinta do Bomfim is shut Sunday and Monday, and Veladouro in Pinhão closes Mondays. Budget covers every train, taxi, tour, tasting and listed meal; beds and the flight into Porto are extra.

Field checks & ratings
Every venue in this itinerary was checked against current public sources — opening hours, prices, closures — before it was published. Stops that aren't venues — transit legs, walks between them — aren't in the count.

How we check
Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
