Florence's historic centre is barely a mile across, so the walking is trivial and the booking is the whole game — this itinerary is built backwards from four timed-entry slots you must reserve before you fly. Day 1 is the Duomo complex and the civic centre, day 2 is the Uffizi and the climb to sunset above the river, day 3 is Michelangelo's David and the Oltrarno. Reservation lead times, checked July 2026: Brunelleschi's Dome 4–8 weeks in peak season (it is the hardest slot in the city), the Uffizi 3–6 weeks, the Accademia 2–4 weeks, the Brancacci Chapel about a week. Two 2026 price changes catch out older guides: the Accademia went from €16 to €20 on 1 February 2026, and Uffizi advance tickets now cost more than walk-ups (€29 vs €25) because the €4 booking fee is baked in — you pay it for the slot, not for a discount. And pick your start day off this list, because it decides everything: day 1 cannot be a Sunday — the dome climb it opens with does not run before 12:45 on Sundays and public holidays, and closes early (16:30 last entry) on Saturdays too. Day 1 also wants to avoid the first Tuesday of the month, when the Opera del Duomo museum closes, and Thursday, when Palazzo Vecchio shuts at 14:00. Day 2 cannot be a Monday (Uffizi closed). Day 3 cannot be a Monday either (Accademia and Medici Chapels closed) or a Tuesday (Brancacci Chapel closed), and Santo Spirito closes Wednesdays. A Wednesday-to-Friday run clears every one of those constraints at once, which is why it is the start this itinerary is written for.

08:15
Brunelleschi's Dome, Florence Cathedralbook ahead
sight · 105 min · €30 · Cupola del Brunelleschi, Piazza del Duomo, Florencebook ahead
Cupola del Brunelleschi, Piazza del Duomo, Florence
The Brunelleschi Pass is €30 and this is the single booking to make first — mid-morning dome slots in April–October routinely sell out 4–8 weeks ahead on tickets.duomo.firenze.it, and no other ticket in Florence is as tight. The pass is valid three calendar days and also covers the Baptistery, the Opera del Duomo museum, Giotto's bell tower and the Santa Reparata crypt, which is why the whole morning runs off one purchase. Take the 08:15 slot: 463 steps, no lift, a genuinely narrow stretch between the dome's two shells, and it gets hot and airless later. Do not put day 1 on a Sunday. The dome's last entry is 18:45 Monday–Friday but 16:30 on Saturday, and on Sundays and public holidays it does not open at all until 12:45 (last slot 16:30) because of morning Mass — an 08:15 Sunday slot simply does not exist, and a Sunday start would wreck the whole day as sequenced. Entry is at Porta della Mandorla on the north side, not the west front — bring photo ID. The cathedral nave itself is free and needs no ticket, but it is a separate queue on the west front and worth ten minutes for the Vasari–Zuccari Last Judgement seen from below after you have just walked inside it.

Battistero di San Giovannibook ahead
sight · 40 min · freebook ahead
Battistero di San Giovanni, Piazza San Giovanni, Florence
Included in the Brunelleschi Pass, one minute from the dome exit. One caveat worth knowing before you build expectations: the vault mosaics — the thing most people come for — have been under restoration and are not fully visible, so check the notice on the ticket site for the current state before you go. The bronze doors outside are consolation and then some, though what you see on the building are copies; the restored originals, including Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, are in the museum you are walking to next.
NOTE · field note · RESTORATION: the vault mosaics - the reason most visitors come - are confirmed still under restoration and not visible as of 2026-08-15, with no completion date published.

Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
sight · 80 min · free
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Piazza del Duomo 9, Florence
Also on the Brunelleschi Pass, open 08:30–19:00 every day except the first Tuesday of the month, when it closes — the one date trap in the Duomo complex, and the reason to check a calendar as well as a clock. It is the most underrated museum in Florence: most visitors skip it because they have already paid for the dome and assume they are done. It holds the original Gates of Paradise panels, Donatello's gaunt wooden Mary Magdalene, and Michelangelo's Bandini Pietà, the one he attacked with a hammer at around eighty. The first room is a full-scale reconstruction of the cathedral's demolished medieval façade with the sculpture put back where it stood, which does more to explain the building outside than any guidebook. Air-conditioned, and quiet at 11:00.
12:45
Trattoria Le Mossacce
food · 75 min · €25
Trattoria Le Mossacce, Via del Proconsolo 55r, Florence
Three minutes south of the Duomo and a genuine 1925 Florentine trattoria rather than a piazza tourist trap — Tripadvisor around 4.2 across roughly 1,000 reviews. Ribollita, bistecca, tables close enough that you will hear your neighbours order. About €25 a head with a quarter-litre of house red. Closed Saturday and Sunday, and lunch runs only 12:00–14:30, so if your day 1 falls on a weekend go instead to the Mercato Centrale food hall on Piazza del Mercato Centrale (open daily 10:00–24:00, eight minutes north-west) and eat upstairs. Small room, no booking taken, but arriving at 12:30 rather than 13:15 saves a wait.

14:30
Museo di Palazzo Vecchiobook ahead
sight · 120 min · €19 · Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Florencebook ahead
Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Florence
€18 plus €1 presale on ticketsmuseums.comune.fi.it; the museum went cashless, so bring a card even for the on-site desk. Prices rose in February 2026 — listings quoting €12.50 are stale. Open 09:00–19:00 Friday to Wednesday but only 09:00–14:00 on Thursdays, which is the trap on this day. The Salone dei Cinquecento is the reason to come: a hall the length of a football pitch, Vasari's battle frescoes above, and the still-unresolved question of whether Leonardo's lost Battle of Anghiari sits behind one of them. Skip the Arnolfo Tower climb — 418 steps, separate €13.50 ticket, closed in rain, and you did the better climb this morning. From April to September the museum often runs late openings to 23:00 (not Thursdays), which is a fair swap if you would rather move it out of the afternoon.

Ponte Vecchio
sight · 45 min · free
Ponte Vecchio, Florence
Free, five minutes from Palazzo Vecchio, and better walked than photographed from on it — the shot everyone wants is from Ponte Santa Trinita, one bridge west, where you see the whole thing side-on with the Vasari Corridor running along its top. The goldsmiths' shops have been there since 1593, when Ferdinando I evicted the butchers for the smell. Late afternoon is the good light here; the crush thins after about 18:30.
NOTE · field note · WORKS: the bridge's first major restoration in 700 years began 25 May 2026. — checked 2026-08-15

Trattoria Sostanzabook ahead
food · 105 min · €55book ahead
Trattoria Sostanza, Via del Porcellana 25r, Florence
Open since 1869, nicknamed 'Il Troia', and the one meal on this trip to book before you leave home — they are famously old-fashioned about it, so phone rather than expecting an online form. Cash only, two rigid seatings (12:30–14:00 and 19:30–21:30), closed Sundays. Order the petto di pollo al burro: chicken breast cooked in an absurd quantity of butter in a copper pan, served in the pan, and the reason the place sits on every serious Florence list. Around €55 a head with wine. Communal tables, brusque service, no menus in six languages — that is the format, not a lapse. Fifteen minutes' walk west of the Duomo.

08:15
Uffizi Gallerybook ahead
sight · 195 min · €29 · Galleria degli Uffizi, Piazzale degli Uffizi 6, Florencebook ahead
Galleria degli Uffizi, Piazzale degli Uffizi 6, Florence
€29 booked in advance on tickets.uffizi.it, which is €4 more than the €25 walk-up price — the booking fee is the cost of a guaranteed slot, not a discount, and in peak season it is worth every cent. Book 3–6 weeks out. Closed Mondays, plus 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. Take the 08:15 opening slot and arrive 10–15 minutes early; entry is enforced to the booked time. Three hours is a real visit rather than a forced march: the Botticelli room (Primavera and the Birth of Venus in the same space), Leonardo's unfinished Adoration of the Magi, Caravaggio's Medusa and Bacchus, and the west corridor windows over the Arno that most people walk straight past. From January 2026 there is also a €16 door price for entry from 16:00 — a legitimate budget play if you would rather trade the good light for the saving, but you will be tired and the last 90 minutes are rushed. The Vasari Corridor is a separate combined ticket (€47 with the gallery) and is not in this plan.

All'Antico Vinaio
food · 45 min · €10
All'Antico Vinaio, Via dei Neri 65r, Florence
Five minutes from the Uffizi exit and deliberately the cheap meal of the day — €8–12 for a schiacciata the size of a paperback, open 11:30–15:00 and 18:00–21:30. Yes the queue is long, and yes it is worth about fifteen minutes: the family has run this counter on Via dei Neri since 1991 and now occupies four numbers on the same street (65r, 74r, 76r and 78r), so join whichever line is shortest — they serve the same menu. La Favolosa is the standard order. Eat it standing on the street like everyone else; there is no real seating.

€10 plus a €1 online booking fee; open Monday–Saturday 09:30–17:30 with last entry 17:00, Sundays and religious holidays only from 14:00. The ticket includes the cloisters, Brunelleschi's Pazzi Chapel and the Museo dell'Opera. This is the burial church of the Italian state as it wanted to see itself — Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Rossini, and a cenotaph to Dante, who is buried in Ravenna and was never brought home. Giotto's frescoes in the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels are the point for anyone who cares how Western painting learned to put weight into a body. Shoulders and knees covered.

Vivoli, Via dell'Isola delle Stinche 7r, Florence
Four minutes north of Santa Croce, making gelato since 1930, rated around 4.5 across 8,000+ reviews. Served in cups only — no cones, a house rule, do not argue it. The pistachio affogato is the order. Expect a line at peak hours and effectively no seating, and note it often closes for several days in August. Around €6.

Piazzale Michelangelo
sight · 60 min · free
Piazzale Michelangelo, Florence
Free, and the walk up is half of it: cross to Piazza Poggi and take the Rampe del Poggi, a switchback of ramps, grottoes and fountains restored in 2019, about 25 minutes from Santa Croce at an unhurried pace. This is the postcard view — the whole centre with the dome sitting over it and the hills behind. The bronze David up here is a copy, as is the one outside Palazzo Vecchio; the marble is tomorrow morning. If the climb is not on, bus 12 or 13 from the centre stops at the piazzale.
17:45
Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte
sight · 75 min · free · Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, Via delle Porte Sante 34, Florence
Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, Via delle Porte Sante 34, Florence
Free, no booking, five minutes further uphill from the piazzale — and the better building of the two viewpoints by a wide margin: an eleventh-century green-and-white marble front, a raised choir over a crypt, and a floor inlaid with zodiac signs. The Olivetan monks sing the evening Mass in Latin and Gregorian chant at 18:00 on weekdays and Saturdays with vespers at 18:30, and at 17:30 on Sundays and feast days; it runs about half an hour and visitors sit at the back. Time the descent so you are back at the Piazzale for actual sunset, which across this itinerary's spring and autumn seasons falls anywhere between roughly 18:00 and 20:45 — look it up for your date and slide these two stops earlier or later as one block.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the sung Latin/Gregorian Mass runs 18:00 Monday to Friday but SATURDAY is now 17:30, not the 18:00 the stop states for weekdays-and-Saturdays; Sundays and feast days remain 17:30 and Vespers is daily at 18:30. — checked 2026-08-15

Osteria Antica Mescita San Niccolò, Via San Niccolò 60r, Florence
Straight down the hill from San Miniato into the San Niccolò quarter, which is where Florentines eat when they want to stay on this side of the river. Part of the room is an eleventh-century undercroft beside the church of San Niccolò; Tripadvisor around 4.2, and well outside the ranking noise of the centre. Tuscan standards done properly — ribollita, peposo, a short honest wine list — for roughly €35 a head. Open daily for lunch and from 19:00; book the same day if you can, it is small.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
