Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in seven days, three bases, two trains and one hired car, with no leg travelled twice. Start on a Wednesday. That is not arbitrary and it is worth more than any single sight on this list: it puts day 2 at the Nizamuddin dargah on a Thursday evening, which is the night the qawwals sing; it puts day 3 in Agra on a Friday, the one day of the week the Agra Development Authority does not levy its 500-rupee tourist toll, so the fort, the Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh are all at their cheapest and the Taj is closed anyway; and it puts the Taj Mahal at sunrise on Saturday, when the 500-rupee toll is bundled into a ticket you have to buy regardless and therefore also covers Akbar's tomb that afternoon. Arranged that way you pay that toll exactly once in two days in Agra. The usual arrangement, one Taj-and-fort day plus a second monument day, pays it twice. The same logic runs in Jaipur: days 6 and 7 are consecutive so that one 2-day composite ticket, about 1,500 rupees for foreigners, covers Amber, Nahargarh, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Albert Hall, which come to roughly 3,400 rupees bought one at a time. Delhi to Agra and Jaipur back to Delhi are trains because on those two corridors the train is faster, cheaper and more comfortable than the road. Agra to Jaipur is a hired car for the opposite reason: it is the only way Fatehpur Sikri and the Chand Baori stepwell are on the route instead of being two separate day trips. Budget about 23,100 rupees per person of listed costs, of which roughly 5,250 is intercity transport and about 8,300 is monument admission, because foreigner ticket prices dominate a trip like this far more than food does. Lodging is extra. Every Rajasthan monument price here reflects the revision that took effect on 1 January 2026, so a guidebook printed before then will undercount Jaipur badly. October to March; May and June in Agra and Jaipur run past 45 degrees.

Airport Express Metro from Indira Gandhi International Airport to New Delhi Station
travel · 25 min · ₹60
60 rupees, about 20 minutes from Terminal 3 to New Delhi station, trains every 10 to 15 minutes from 04:45 to 23:30. The prepaid taxi counter in arrivals is 500 to 600 rupees and 60 to 90 minutes in traffic, so the metro is not a budget compromise here, it is the faster option. Two things to do before you leave the terminal: buy a local SIM at the Airtel or Jio counter in arrivals, because IRCTC, Uber and every payment app want an Indian number for the one-time password, and buy a metro card or set up the DMRC Momentum 2.0 app. The Airport Express is a separate line with its own fare, but the same card works on the rest of the network.

Bloomrooms @ New Delhi Railway Station, 8721/1 Arakashan Road, Paharganj
Two nights, and the choice is a railway decision rather than a hotel one: day 3 leaves from New Delhi station at 06:00, and from here that is a seven-minute walk rather than a pre-dawn taxi you have to arrange the night before. Tripadvisor 4.0, and it sits around #100 of Delhi's 1,400-odd hotels. Doubles run roughly 2,500 to 4,000 rupees. Paharganj is loud and scruffy and the hotel is a clean modern box inside it, which is the trade. Karol Bagh, Connaught Place or anywhere on the Yellow Line works as well if you would rather not sleep in Paharganj, at the cost of that walk. Lodging is not in the budget figure.

Red Fort
sight · 105 min · ₹600
Red Fort, Netaji Subhash Marg, Chandni Chowk
600 rupees for foreigners at the window, 550 booked online at asi.payumoney.com. Open 09:30 to 16:30 and closed Mondays, which is the single closure that can break this day, so do not start this itinerary on a Monday. Shah Jahan's fort, begun 1638 when he moved the capital here from Agra, and the reason the two cities on this route feel like one project. Go straight through Lahori Gate and the covered Chhatta Chowk bazaar to the Diwan-i-Khas: the pietra dura inlay on its piers is the same craft, by the same guilds, that you will be looking at on the Taj on day 4. Set expectations honestly: it sits at 4.0 on Tripadvisor across some 5,600 reviews, which is low for a UNESCO site, and the recurring complaints are the security queue at Lahori Gate, the state of the grounds, and how much of the fort is fenced off. Roughly two thirds of it is army-held and closed. Bags go through a scanner and large ones are refused. Come for the Diwan-i-Khas and the bazaar, not for a manicured monument.
NOTE · field note · ASI's own page re-confirms Rs 600 cash / Rs 550 online for foreigners; 09:30-16:30 and the Monday closure re-confirmed, and day 1 is a Wednesday under the itinerary's start rule. — checked 2026-08-15

Karim's
food · 75 min · ₹500
Karim's, 16 Gali Kababian, Jama Masjid
Tripadvisor 4.0 and around #171 of New Delhi's 4,600-plus restaurants, in an alley off Jama Masjid's gate 1, run by the same family since 1913 and descended, they say, from Mughal court cooks. Order the mutton burra, the seekh kebab and a khameeri roti; the nihari is a breakfast dish and is gone by about 11:00. Reviews split hard between people who call it the best kebab in India and people who found it inconsistent and cramped, and both are describing the same place on different days. Roughly 400 to 600 rupees a head. Cash is easiest and the queue for a table is worst between 14:00 and 15:00.

Jama Masjid, Meena Bazaar, Chandni Chowk
Entry to the courtyard is free, but the boards charge 300 rupees for any camera including a phone camera, and 100 rupees to climb the southern minaret. India's largest mosque, finished in 1656, and the courtyard holds 25,000 people. Closed to visitors from about 12:00 to 13:30 for prayers, which is why this comes after lunch and not before. Shoes off at the steps, shoulders and knees covered, and cotton robes are lent at the gate for a deposit. The minaret is 130 narrow spiral steps with no passing places; women are not admitted without a male companion, which is the mosque's own rule rather than a suggestion.

Kinari Bazaar and Chandni Chowk
sight · 75 min · free · Kinari Bazaar, Chandni Chowk
Kinari Bazaar, Chandni Chowk
Free, and the point is the specialisation: Chandni Chowk is not one market but a dozen single-trade lanes laid out in the 1650s and still sorted the same way. Kinari Bazaar is wedding trim and tinsel, Dariba Kalan is silver, Nai Sarak is books, Khari Baoli at the far west end is Asia's largest wholesale spice market and will make you sneeze from the street. Walk it, do not ride it. Most shops shut on Sundays, and the lanes are genuinely impassable on a Saturday afternoon. Watch your pockets in the crush and agree an auto-rickshaw fare before you get in, or insist on the meter.

Kuremal Mohan Lal Kulfi Wale
food · 30 min · ₹120
Kuremal Mohan Lal Kulfi Wale, Kucha Pati Ram, Sitaram Bazar
Tripadvisor 4.6 and around #329 of 4,650 New Delhi restaurants, which for a kulfi counter in a back lane is remarkable. Since 1908, and the speciality is stuffed fruit kulfi: a mango or a pomegranate hollowed out, filled with kulfi and frozen whole, then sliced in front of you. 80 to 150 rupees. It is a ten-minute walk south of Chandni Chowk through Sitaram Bazar and the lane is easy to miss, which is part of why it is still mostly locals. Cash only. Mango season is roughly April to July; the rest of the year the pomegranate and the paan flavours are the ones to order.

Qutub Minar, Mehrauli
600 rupees for foreigners at the window, 550 online. Open 07:00 to 17:00 every day, and 09:00 is early enough to have the lawns to yourself. A 72.5 m fluted victory tower begun in 1199, tapering from 14 m at the base to 2.7 m at the top, and you cannot climb it: the interior has been shut since a stairwell stampede in 1981. Give the complex around it as much time as the tower. The Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque was built out of the columns of 27 demolished Hindu and Jain temples, reused whole and still carved, and the 4th-century iron pillar in the courtyard has not meaningfully rusted in 1,600 years. Yellow Line to Qutub Minar station, then a ten-minute auto.

Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Anuvrat Marg, Mehrauli
Free, unfenced, open in daylight, and a very different experience from the ticketed complex 400 m north. Eighty hectares holding more than 100 structures from a thousand years of continuous occupation, including Balban's tomb, the Jamali Kamali mosque and the walls of Lal Kot, Delhi's oldest fort. Reviews are honestly mixed and the complaints are fair: there is almost no signage, paths disappear into scrub, and maintenance is patchy. Come for the atmosphere of a ruined city nobody is minding rather than for a curated visit, keep to the main track, and do not come alone at dusk.

Olive Bar & Kitchen, One Style Mile, Kalka Das Marg, Mehrauli
Tripadvisor 4.2 and around #168 of 4,660 New Delhi restaurants. A whitewashed haveli courtyard with olive trees and a terrace that looks straight at the Qutub Minar, five minutes from the gate you just came out of, serving Mediterranean rather than Indian food. It is here because the geography is perfect and because after three days of Mughlai a plate of pasta is a relief, not because Delhi lacks Indian restaurants. Opens 12:00 for lunch and books out at weekends. Around 1,800 to 2,500 rupees a head with a drink, which makes it the most expensive meal on this route. If that is the wrong trade, the Hauz Khas Village cafes are 15 minutes north and half the price.

Humayun's Tomb
sight · 80 min · ₹550
Humayun's Tomb, Mathura Road, Nizamuddin East
600 rupees for foreigners at the window, 550 online, open sunrise to sunset daily. This is the building the Taj Mahal is an argument with: finished in 1572 by Humayun's widow, it is the first garden tomb in the subcontinent, the first to put a domed mausoleum at the centre of a quartered charbagh, and the Taj is the same idea rebuilt in marble 80 years later by the same dynasty. Seeing it two days before the Taj rather than after is the whole reason it sits here. The underground site museum that opened in 2024 is sold as a joint ticket at the counter together with Sunder Nursery next door, so ask for the combined ticket rather than paying twice.

Sunder Nursery
sight · 75 min · ₹100
Sunder Nursery, Nizamuddin, Mathura Road
100 rupees for foreigners, 35 for Indians. Open 07:00 to 19:00 April to September and 07:00 to 18:00 October to March. A 90-hectare 16th-century Mughal garden that spent a century as a government tree nursery and was excavated and replanted over ten years, reopening in 2018 with fifteen Mughal monuments back in the open. It connects to Humayun's Tomb, so do them in one go. Late afternoon is right: the light is low on the Sunderwala Burj, the lake end is full of birds, and the whole place is quiet in a way nothing else in central Delhi is. There are food stalls near the entrance if the walk runs long.

Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah
sight · 90 min · free
Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah, Nizamuddin West
Free, and the reason this itinerary starts on a Wednesday. The shrine of the 14th-century Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya, open 05:30 to 22:00 and later on Thursdays, when qawwals sing in the courtyard roughly 18:00 to 19:30 and again about 21:00 to 22:30. Come on a Thursday and arrive by 17:45 to get a place on the marble; other evenings there is often singing after sunset prayers but it is smaller and not guaranteed. Practicalities that matter: it is reached on foot through the basti lanes off Mathura Road, shoes come off at the shoe stand for a few rupees, everyone covers their head, and women may not enter the inner tomb chamber itself. Carry small notes for the offering trays, and expect firm requests for donations at the gate that you are free to decline. Nizamuddin is a working shrine before it is anything else.

Khan Chacha
food · 60 min · ₹500
Khan Chacha, Middle Lane, Khan Market
Tripadvisor 4.0 and around #172 of 4,660 New Delhi restaurants, ten minutes by car from the dargah. A kathi roll counter that started at Khan Market in 1972 and now has a proper first-floor room: mutton seekh or chicken malai, off the charcoal, rolled in a paratha with onion and chutney, 300 to 500 rupees for two rolls and a drink. Set expectations honestly. It is 4.0 rather than 4.5 because the original pavement stall is long gone and regulars have been saying it is not what it was for a decade; what it still is, is a hot, fast, unfussy dinner at 20:00 on a day that started at 09:00. Open until about 23:00.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check.
