The full 1,332 km loop of Route 1 driven anti-clockwise in seven days, from the south-coast waterfalls to the glacier lagoon, the East Fjords, the volcanic north and back down the west. Every day opens with one explicit driving leg between overnight bases — distance, net driving time and the sub-legs between sights — because on the Ring Road the drive is the itinerary, and the single most common first-timer mistake is booking a base you cannot reach before dark. This is a summer plan: it assumes late May to mid-September, when Route 1 is reliably open and daylight is long enough to keep driving after dinner. The budget is honest about Iceland — it includes a per-person share of a seven-day rental car and fuel, and even at mid-range choices the total lands well above what the same week costs in mainland Europe.

travel · 45 min · ISK 63,000book ahead
Costed at ISK 63,000 per person — a seven-day mid-size 4x4 in high season runs roughly ISK 98,000–136,000 for the car, split between two people. Solo travellers: double this line. Take sand-and-ash protection (SAAP) as well as gravel protection — the Vík–Höfn stretch is where windblown grit strips paint, and standard CDW does not cover it. Photograph every existing scratch before you leave the lot. A 2WD is legally fine on Route 1 in summer; nothing in this itinerary needs an F-road.

Drive Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík (Route 41, 50 km, ~50 min)
travel · 50 min · ISK 450
Fuel throughout this itinerary is costed at ISK 9 per km per person — about 8 L/100 km at ISK 210–225 per litre for 95-octane, split two ways. Fill up at N1, Orkan or Costco (cheapest, Reykjavík only); most rural pumps are unmanned and need a card with a PIN. Cards work everywhere in Iceland, including toilets and parking machines — you do not need cash. The Hvalfjörður tunnel on the way back in on day 7 has been toll-free since 2018.
ISK 450
14:00
Hallgrímskirkja
sight · 60 min · ISK 1,500
Hallgrímskirkja, Hallgrímstorg 1, Reykjavík
Church free; tower lift ISK 1,500 for adults, and the 360° view is the best orientation you will get to the city. Open 09:00–20:00 in summer, 10:00–17:00 in winter, with the tower closing 30 minutes before. No pre-booking is possible — just queue. Closed to sightseeing during services.

Sólfar, Sæbraut, Reykjavík
Free, always open. It is a Viking-ship-shaped ode to the sun, not a replica longship — the sculptor was explicit about that. Ten minutes downhill from Hallgrímskirkja along Frakkastígur, with Mount Esja across the bay.
16:15
Harpa Concert Hall
sight · 45 min · free · Harpa, Austurbakki 2, Reykjavík
Harpa, Austurbakki 2, Reykjavík
Free to walk in and up through the basalt-cell glass facade; the upper levels catch the late light. Ten-minute walk along the shore from the Sun Voyager. Concert tickets are separate.

Bónus Fiskislóð
food · 40 min · ISK 6,000 · Bónus, Fiskislóð 15, Reykjavík
Bónus, Fiskislóð 15, Reykjavík
Stock the car before you leave the capital: breakfasts, sandwich makings, snacks, and 2 L of water per person per day. Bónus (pink-pig logo) is the cheapest chain and roughly half what a petrol-station sandwich costs on the road — the single biggest lever on an Iceland food budget. Most branches close 18:30; check the branch. Budgeted here as ISK 6,000 per person for the week's self-catered breakfasts and snacks.

Fish served in sizzling cast-iron pans — Arctic char, wolffish, plokkfiskur. Open daily 11:30–15:00 and 17:00–22:00. Portions are large enough to share. Book ahead in summer, though walk-ins are usually seated within minutes.

08:30
Drive Reykjavík to Vík í Mýrdal (Route 1, 187 km, ~2 h 30 net driving)
travel · 150 min · ISK 1,800
Per-leg: Reykjavík → Seljalandsfoss 128 km / 1 h 45 · → Skógafoss 30 km / 25 min · → Dyrhólaey 33 km / 30 min (last 3 km on road 218, steep and gravelled) · → Reynisfjara 12 km / 15 min · → Vík 6 km / 8 min. Speed limits: 90 km/h paved rural, 80 km/h gravel, 50 km/h in towns, and the speed cameras are real. Off-road driving is illegal and carries fines in the hundreds of thousands of ISK.
ISK 1,800
10:15
Seljalandsfoss
sight · 60 min · ISK 500
Seljalandsfoss, Route 249 off Route 1
Parking ISK 1,000 per car (paid via checkit.is at the machine) — costed here as ISK 500 per person for two sharing. The draw is the path that runs behind the curtain of water: you will get soaked, so waterproof trousers, not just a jacket, and shoes with grip. The path is closed in winter when it ices over. Walk 10 minutes north along the cliff to Gljúfrabúi, a second waterfall hidden inside a slot canyon that most coach groups skip.
ISK 500
11:45
Skógafoss
sight · 75 min · ISK 500
Skógafoss, Skógar
Parking ISK 1,000 per car via the Parka app, introduced May 2025 — ISK 500 per person here. A 60 m wall of water you can walk right up to; on a sunny afternoon the spray throws a double rainbow. The staircase to the top viewpoint is 527 steps and worth it for the view down the valley — allow 30 minutes for the round trip.

food · 45 min · ISK 3,800 · Sveitagrill Míu, Skógar, a few hundred metres before the Skógafoss car park
Sveitagrill Míu, Skógar, a few hundred metres before the Skógafoss car park
A strawberry-pink food van doing fish and chips with fish bought fresh from the local fishmonger each morning — repeatedly called the best in Iceland, and ISK 3,500–4,200 for a portion. Open 12:00–16:00 and closed on Fridays; it can also sell out of fish or shut in severe weather, so check its Google listing that morning. Cards accepted. If it is shut, the Hótel Skógafoss Bistró Bar 200 m away serves 07:00–21:00 daily — it only rates 3.9 on Tripadvisor, but it is the sole all-hours kitchen between Hvolsvöllur and Vík.
ISK 3,800
14:45
Dyrhólaey
sight · 60 min · free
Dyrhólaey lighthouse and arch, Route 218
Free. The upper viewpoint by the lighthouse looks down on the sea arch and along the whole black coast; the lower car park reaches the beach level. Puffins nest here from mid-May to early August, when the reserve closes overnight (roughly 19:00–09:00) and sometimes entirely — check road.is and the on-site signs. The final climb on road 218 is steep loose gravel; take it slowly in a 2WD.
16:15
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
sight · 60 min · ISK 500 · Reynisfjara, Route 215
Reynisfjara, Route 215
Parking ISK 1,000 in the lower lot or ISK 750 in the upper — ISK 500 per person here. Sneaker waves at Reynisfjara have killed visitors: obey the traffic-light danger system at the entrance, never turn your back on the water, and stay well up the beach. The basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks are the photograph; the sea is not a paddling beach.

In one of Vík's oldest houses (1902), up the hill with a view over the town and the sea stacks. Icelandic mains — lamb fillet, cod, seafood soup — alongside a Thai section that locals rate as highly as the pizza. Book ahead in summer; Vík has few tables and every south-coast driver stops here.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
