Four days that treat the Bosphorus as the point rather than the backdrop: the Ottoman-Byzantine peninsula for two days, Galata and Beyoğlu for one, and a full day on the Asian side — reached the way fourteen million people reach it, on a commuter ferry with a glass of tea. This itinerary is priced in euros on purpose. Turkish lira prices go stale within months, but since the 2024–25 reforms the state museums charge foreign visitors in euros directly — Hagia Sophia €25, Topkapı €55, Galata Tower €30, the Archaeological Museums €15 — so the largest part of your budget is quoted in a currency that does not drift. What you actually pay in lira is food, transport and coffee, and those are given as bands, converted at roughly 50 ₺ to the euro as checked on 25 July 2026; treat them as indicative and the euro ticket prices as firm. Two things to get right before you book: Topkapı Palace closes on Tuesdays, which fixes the shape of the whole trip, and Hagia Sophia shuts to tourists each Friday around midday for congregational prayer. And skip the €105 Museum Pass — the three covered sites here come to exactly €100.

09:00
Hagia Sophiabook ahead
sight · 90 min · €25book ahead
Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, Sultanahmet, Fatih, Istanbul
€25 for foreign visitors, paid in euros, and the ticket buys the upper gallery — since it returned to use as a mosque in 2020 the ground floor is for worship and the tourist route runs the ramp up to the galleries. That is not the consolation prize it sounds like: the gallery is where the Deësis mosaic is, and where you look down the length of the nave at a dome that held the record as the world's largest for nearly a thousand years, finished in 537 and standing through earthquakes that flattened everything around it. Open daily roughly 09:00–18:00 for visitors, but it closes to tourists for each of the five daily prayers (30–45 minutes) and on Fridays from about 12:30 to 14:00 for Friday prayer — so a Friday morning start is fine and a Friday lunchtime one is not. Shoulders and knees covered; women need a headscarf, sold at the door if you forget. Shoes off, bag provided.

Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)
sight · 45 min · free · Sultan Ahmet Camii, Sultanahmet, Fatih, Istanbul
Sultan Ahmet Camii, Sultanahmet, Fatih, Istanbul
Free — it is a working mosque, not a museum, and there is no ticket of any kind. Anyone who tries to sell you one outside is running a scam, which is the most common one in Sultanahmet. Enter by the north gate on the Hippodrome side; the tourist entrance is signposted and separate from the worshippers' door. Closed to visitors during the five prayer times and for about 90 minutes around midday Friday. The name comes from the 20,000-odd İznik tiles lining the upper walls — go in the morning while the light is still coming through the east windows onto them. Same dress rules as Hagia Sophia. Free to enter does not mean free of donation pressure at the exit; a donation is genuinely optional.
11:45
The Hippodrome (Sultanahmet Square)
sight · 30 min · free · Sultanahmet Meydanı (Hippodrome of Constantinople), Fatih, Istanbul
Sultanahmet Meydanı (Hippodrome of Constantinople), Fatih, Istanbul
Free, open always, and thirty seconds from the Blue Mosque's north gate. It reads as an ordinary park until you understand you are standing in the chariot-racing stadium that was the political centre of Byzantine Constantinople for a thousand years — the Nika riots of 532 killed perhaps 30,000 people on this ground. Three things still stand on the old central spine: the Obelisk of Theodosius, which is Egyptian, carved for Thutmose III around 1450 BC and already ancient when Rome moved it here; the Serpent Column, looted from Delphi, cast from the melted weapons of Persians defeated at Plataea in 479 BC; and the rough-stoned Walled Obelisk. Nothing is fenced and nothing is labelled well — this stop is worth thirty minutes precisely because you now know what you are looking at.

Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi Selim Usta
food · 60 min · €8
Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi Selim Usta, Divanyolu Cad. 12, Sultanahmet, Istanbul
Nobody will tell you there is a non-touristy restaurant in Sultanahmet, because there isn't one — this is the honest answer instead: a köfte counter that has served essentially one menu since 1920, now run by the fourth generation, and still full of Turks at lunchtime. Tripadvisor 4.1 across 2,328 reviews, #485 of 9,716. The menu is grilled meatballs, lamb şiş, lentil soup, piyaz (white beans in olive oil, order it), rice, salad, and semolina helva. Around 400–600 ₺ (€8–12) for a full plate. Two branches on Divanyolu and imitators either side — the one you want is the plain one nearest the Sultanahmet tram stop with 'Selim Usta' on the sign. No reservations, fast turnover, cash or card.

Basilica Cisternbook ahead
sight · 60 min · €38book ahead
Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı), Alemdar, Fatih, Istanbul
€38 — easily the most expensive thing per minute in this itinerary, and still worth it: 336 columns holding a lit, dripping, half-flooded cathedral of water built under Justinian in 532, with two Medusa heads reused as column bases at the far end, one sideways and one upside down. Verify it is open before you build a day around it. Management passed from the Istanbul municipality to the Directorate General of Foundations in June 2026, the cistern shut for several days during the handover, and the old operator's website (yerebatan.com) still carried a closure notice when this was checked on 25 July 2026 even though the site had reopened on 6 June under the new administration. The practical effect is that ticketing and hours moved; check on the day. If it is shut, the 4th-century Şerefiye (Theodosius) Cistern is nine minutes' walk away, far less crowded, and about 900 ₺ (€18).

İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri, Osman Hamdi Bey Yokuşu, Gülhane, Istanbul
€15, open every day, 09:00–18:45 with the box office closing at 18:45 — confirmed on the Ministry's own museum page, and the best-value ticket in the historic peninsula by a wide margin. Three museums on one site: the main Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Ancient Orient, and the Tiled Pavilion. The headline is the Alexander Sarcophagus, carved around 320 BC with battle scenes that still carry traces of their original paint, and it is genuinely one of the finest surviving objects of Greek sculpture anywhere. Also here: the Treaty of Kadesh, the oldest known peace treaty in the world, and the Siloam inscription. Downhill from Topkapı's first courtyard through Gülhane Park, which is free and worth the walk.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the €15 foreign-visitor price is unchanged, but the stop's "09:00–18:45 with the box office closing at 18:45" no longer matches — current listings give 09:00–18:30 with the ticket office closing at 17:30, an hour… — checked 2026-08-15

Matbah Ottoman Palace Cuisinebook ahead
food · 105 min · €45book ahead
Matbah Ottoman Palace Cuisine, Caferiye Sok. 6/1, Sultanahmet, Istanbul
The strongest-rated restaurant in Sultanahmet and the exception to everything said above about the neighbourhood: Tripadvisor 4.6 across 2,169 reviews, #159 of 9,712. It cooks reconstructed Ottoman palace recipes and dates each dish on the menu by the century it comes from — mutancana (lamb with apricot, almond and honey, 15th century), goose kebab, cherry lamb. That could be a gimmick and isn't; the cooking is careful. Terrace tables look at the back of Hagia Sophia. Mains roughly 700–1,200 ₺, so around €45 a head with a glass of wine. Reserve for the terrace, and note it is inside the Ottoman Hotel Imperial, which is why the entrance looks like a hotel lobby.

Topkapı Sarayı, Cankurtaran, Fatih, Istanbul
€55, and closed every Tuesday — this single fact should decide which day of the week you start the trip. Since 2025 foreign visitors get one combined ticket only, covering the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene; there is no cheaper palace-only option, so the Harem you might have skipped is already paid for and you should go in. Three hours is the right budget for four courtyards. Do the Harem first, at opening, because it is the part that gets unbearable by 11:00 — 300-odd rooms of tiled corridors where the sultan's mother actually ran much of the empire. Then the Treasury for the Topkapı Dagger and the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond, then the Sacred Relics rooms, and finally the Fourth Courtyard terrace, which looks down on the Bosphorus meeting the Golden Horn and is where you should stop and sit.

Süleymaniye Mosque
sight · 60 min · free · Süleymaniye Camii, Süleymaniye, Fatih, Istanbul
Süleymaniye Camii, Süleymaniye, Fatih, Istanbul
Free, and if you see one mosque properly in Istanbul make it this one rather than the Blue Mosque. Mimar Sinan built it for Süleyman the Magnificent between 1550 and 1557 at the height of both their powers, and he considered it his journeyman work — the proportions are calmer, the light is better, and there are a fraction of the visitors. The dome is ventilated by a system that drew soot from the oil lamps into a single chamber so it could be collected and made into ink. Süleyman and his wife Roxelana are buried in the garden tombs, which are free and usually empty. The terrace on the Golden Horn side is one of the great free views in the city. Closed to visitors during prayers; same dress code.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: free and open as the stop says (roughly 09:00–18:00 for visitors), but the stop schedules 12:30 and current sources state that on Fridays visitor access does not resume until about 14:30 because of congregational… — checked 2026-08-15

Siirt Şeref Büryan Kebap Salonu
food · 60 min · €12
Siirt Şeref Büryan Kebap Salonu, İtfaiye Cad., Kadınlar Pazarı, Fatih, Istanbul
Ten minutes downhill from Süleymaniye into Kadınlar Pazarı, the market square under the Valens Aqueduct where Istanbul's south-eastern Anatolian community shops — no tourist infrastructure at all. Büryan is the dish: lamb hung and slow-roasted in a sealed pit oven until it falls apart, served on flatbread by weight, with perde pilav on the side. Tripadvisor 4.2 across 319 reviews and 4.9 on Restaurant Guru across 8,000+; Lonely Planet, the Guardian and Rough Guide have all sent people here. Roughly 500–800 ₺ (€10–16). Go at lunch, not dinner — büryan is cooked in a fixed daily batch and the good places sell out by mid-afternoon. Minimal English; pointing works.

Grand Bazaar
sight · 90 min · free · Kapalıçarşı (Grand Bazaar), Beyazıt, Fatih, Istanbul
Kapalıçarşı (Grand Bazaar), Beyazıt, Fatih, Istanbul
Free to enter. Open Monday–Saturday roughly 09:00–19:00 and closed all day Sunday, which is the other scheduling constraint in this itinerary. 4,000 shops across 61 covered streets, trading continuously since 1461. Two pieces of practical advice worth more than a map: the gold and jewellery lanes on Kalpakçılar are where locals actually buy, and the İç Bedesten at the centre is the oldest section and where the genuine antiques are. Haggling is expected everywhere except food — open at roughly half the asking price and be willing to walk. If you want carpets and are not confident, do not start; the sales technique here is world-class and you will be given tea. Ninety minutes is enough to see it; it is a place to walk through, not to shop unless you came to.
17:00
Spice Bazaar and Eminönü
food · 60 min · free · Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar), Rüstem Paşa, Eminönü, Istanbul
Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar), Rüstem Paşa, Eminönü, Istanbul
Free. Downhill from the Grand Bazaar through the hardware and paper-goods streets — the walk itself shows you more of working Istanbul than either bazaar does. The Spice Bazaar proper is small, loud and aggressively touristed inside; the good stuff is in the streets around it, especially Hasırcılar Caddesi, where Turks buy their coffee, and where the queue outside Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi has been forming since 1871. Buy pistachios, dried apricots and real saffron here rather than the pre-boxed 'Turkish delight' sold at the entrances. Do not buy loose saffron from a street stall. Nearby: the Rüstem Paşa Mosque, tucked up a staircase above the shops, with the best İznik tilework in the city and almost nobody in it.
18:30
Galata Bridge at sunset
sight · 45 min · free · Galata Köprüsü, Eminönü / Karaköy, Istanbul
Galata Köprüsü, Eminönü / Karaköy, Istanbul
Free, and the best forty-five minutes of the day. Walk the upper deck from Eminönü to Karaköy with the amateur fishermen shoulder to shoulder along both rails — they are there every evening, they are not a performance, and the mackerel are real. Behind you the domes and minarets of the peninsula go dark against the sky; ahead the Galata Tower lights up. The lower deck is a row of fish restaurants whose touts will work hard on you: they are the definition of a tourist trap and the food is poor for the money, so admire the view and keep walking. Sunset is around 20:30 in June and 17:00 in December, so shift this stop by season.
20:00
Karaköy Lokantasıbook ahead
food · 105 min · €35book ahead
Karaköy Lokantası, Kemankeş Cad. 37A, Karaköy, Istanbul
Five minutes off the bridge on the Karaköy side. Turquoise-tiled, high-ceilinged, and a genuine institution — Tripadvisor 4.2 across 1,360 reviews, #448 of 9,705, and carried by the Michelin guide, Time Out, Fodor's and Frommer's. It works as a lokanta at lunch and a meyhane at night, so evening is mezes and rakı: order the levrek marine, the fava, the topik, and let the waiter steer. Around 1,200–2,000 ₺ (€25–40) a head with drinks. Two caveats: it moved premises and a strand of reviews maintains it left some of its reputation at the old address, and it is small enough that dinner without a reservation is unlikely to work.
NOTE · field note · ADDRESS: open and trading, still Michelin-listed, and the stop's own rating claim (4.2 / 1,360 / #448) verifies exactly — but no two sources agree on the house number after its move. — checked 2026-08-15

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check.
