Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara and Osaka in ten days, on trains, with four bases and no wasted backtracking. The catalog already has deep single-city builds for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, so those cities get compressed greatest-hits treatment here and the detail goes where a single-city plan can never go: the legs between them. Do not buy the nationwide JR Pass for this route. Priced in July 2026, the JR travel below comes to roughly ¥16,100 — Narita Express ¥3,250, Odawara→Kyoto Hikari ¥12,300, Kyoto→Osaka ¥580 — against ¥50,000 for a 7-day pass, so point-to-point wins by about ¥34,000 and it is not close; you would need roughly three Tokyo–Kyoto round trips to break even. Two other things make a multi-base rail trip pleasant and appear on no single-city itinerary: your suitcase goes Tokyo→Kyoto by takkyubin on day 3 for about ¥2,300 while you take an overnight bag to Hakone, and Hakone is an overnight rather than the day trip the Tokyo 14-day file makes it — which is what buys you the onsen, and the Heiwa-no-Torii at 07:30 with no queue instead of the hour-long one at 14:00. Nara is a day trip from Osaka, not Kyoto, and the reason is in the day-9 notes. Budget about ¥86,000 per person: ¥81,200 of listed stop costs — of which ¥21,100 is the intercity rail and the Hakone Freepass and another ¥4,700 the two airport transfers — plus roughly ¥5,000 of unitemised local subway and bus fares. Lodging is extra, and this is priced for shoulder weeks, not for cherry blossom or peak autumn colour.

Narita Express (N'EX) from Narita Airport to Shinjuku
travel · 80 min · ¥3,250
¥3,250 to Shinjuku, about 80 minutes, all seats reserved — book at the JR East Travel Service Center in the arrivals hall or on the JR East website. Landing at Haneda instead makes this cheaper and shorter: Keikyu plus JR to Shinjuku is roughly ¥600 and 45 minutes, or the Airport Limousine bus about ¥1,400 door to door. Buy your IC card here, not later — Welcome Suica is sold at the airport counters, or add Suica/PASMO to an iPhone or Android wallet before you land, which is the option with no card shortage attached. Every local train, subway and bus for the next ten days runs off that one tap.

Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo, 2-2-1 Nishi-Shinjuku
Three nights in Shinjuku, and the choice is a rail decision rather than a hotel one: the Odakyu Romancecar to Hakone leaves from Shinjuku Station's south end on day 4, a seven-minute walk from the door, so you never carry a bag through Tokyo Station's shinkansen concourse. Tripadvisor 4.0 across ~5,600 reviews, #4 of 20 in Nishi-Shinjuku. Mid-range doubles run roughly ¥28,000–40,000 a night in shoulder season; anything in Shinjuku, Shibuya or around Tokyo Station works as well, and lodging is not in the budget figure. Ask the front desk about takkyubin on day 3 — see that day's last stop.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building observatory

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building North Observatory, Nishi-Shinjuku
Free, 202 m, ten minutes' walk from the hotel — the right first view of Tokyo on a jet-lagged afternoon because it costs nothing and you can leave when you have had enough. Open 09:30–22:00, last entry 21:30; the North observatory closes the second and the South the first Monday of the month. On a clear winter afternoon Fuji is visible to the south-west, which is a useful preview of day 4.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the stop names the NORTH observatory and its location field points there, but the 09:30–22:00 / last-entry-21:30 hours it quotes are the SOUTH deck — the North now closes at 17:30 with last entry 17:00, so the 16… — checked 2026-08-15

Omoide Yokocho
food · 90 min · ¥2,500
Omoide Yokocho, Nishi-Shinjuku
Smoky yakitori alleys by Shinjuku Station's west exit — six seats a stall, no menu you can read, and exactly the right amount of effort for night one. Sit where there is a seat and point at what the person beside you is having; most stalls add a small cover charge of about ¥400. Budget ¥2,000–3,000 with a couple of drinks.

Shinjuku Golden Gai, Kabukicho
Six alleys, ~200 shoebox bars, most seating six people. Many charge a cover of ¥500–1,500 and a good number post an English sign saying whether tourists are welcome — read it, it is meant sincerely either way. One drink in one bar is the whole experience; if you would rather sleep off the flight, skipping this is the day's obvious bail-out.

Senso-ji, Asakusa
Tokyo's oldest temple, and free. The grounds never close, so 08:00 is the difference between photographing Kaminarimon and photographing the back of a tour group. Roughly 40 minutes from Shinjuku on the Marunouchi then Ginza line.

Nakamise Shopping Street, Asakusa
Age-manju, ningyo-yaki and senbei straight off the grill along the 250 m approach. Stalls open from about 09:00–09:30. Eat standing at the stall you bought from — walking while eating is frowned on here and the shopkeepers will point you to the spot.

Tokyo National Museum, Ueno Park
¥1,000 for the permanent collection, open 09:30–17:00, closed Mondays (or the following day when Monday is a holiday) — the one closure that can break this day, so check before you set the alarm. Two hours in the Honkan alone is enough: swords, Jomon pottery, screens. Special exhibitions are ticketed separately and are skippable.

Ameyoko, Ueno
The postwar black-market arcade under the Yamanote tracks, now 400-odd stalls of dried fish, cheap sneakers and standing bars. Lunch here is grazing rather than sitting: kebabs, oysters, takoyaki, a beer at a standing counter, ¥1,000–1,500. Busiest and best on a Saturday afternoon.

Yanaka Ginza

Yanaka Ginza, Taito-ku
A 170 m shopping street on a low-rise ridge that the war and the bubble both missed — croquettes, senbei, a dozen cats, and the Yuyake Dandan steps that face straight into the sunset. Free; budget ¥500–800 for something fried in a paper sleeve. Twenty minutes on foot or two stops on the JR from Ueno.

Tokyo Skytree, Oshiage
¥2,100 for the 350 m Tembo Deck; book a timed slot on the official site in advance (weekday advance fares start around ¥1,800; walk-up costs more and can mean an hour in line). A dusk slot buys the city twice — daylight, then the whole grid lighting up. Skip it if you would rather keep Shibuya Sky on day 3 as your one paid view; doing both is a fair ¥5,500 of the same thing.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
