Kraków is the rare Polish city the war largely spared, so what you walk here is the actual medieval fabric and not a reconstruction of it — Europe's largest medieval market square, a royal hill continuously occupied for a thousand years, and a Jewish quarter whose synagogues still stand. Day one is the Old Town and Wawel, day two is Kazimierz and the ghetto across the river in Podgórze, and day three is Auschwitz-Birkenau, kept as a whole day on its own. Prices are in złoty, not euros — Poland kept the currency and anywhere quoting you EUR is giving you a poor rate. Two booking rules decide whether this trip works. From March 2026 the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial no longer sells anything on site: every visit, including the free individual entry cards, must be reserved in advance at visit.auschwitz.org, the only official platform — free cards at least 7 days ahead, and guided slots routinely gone weeks earlier. And check the closure grid before you fix dates: Wawel Castle closes Mondays, the Rynek Underground closes the second Monday of each month and is free on Tuesday mornings, St Mary's tower is shut November to April, and Schindler's Factory is free on Mondays but cannot be pre-booked on a free day.

Day 1 — The Old Town and Wawel: the city that was not destroyedThe Old Town and Wawel: the city that was not destroyed

09:00
Rynek Główny and the Cloth Hall
sight · 45 min · free · Rynek Główny, Kraków
Rynek Główny, Kraków
Free. At 200 metres a side this is the largest medieval market square in Europe, laid out in 1257 and never bombed — the point of the whole itinerary in one place. The Cloth Hall down the middle has been a covered market since the 14th century and now sells amber and souvenirs at square prices; walk it for the vaulting rather than the shopping. Two things to notice: the lone Gothic tower on the west side is all that survives of the medieval town hall, demolished in 1820, and the whole square is ringed by burgher houses whose cellars are older than their facades. Come at 09:00 and it is nearly empty; by noon in summer it is a solid crowd of tour groups and horse carriages.
09:45
St Mary's Basilica
sight · 60 min · PLN 15 · Bazylika Mariacka, plac Mariacki 5, Kraków
Bazylika Mariacka, plac Mariacki 5, Kraków
15 PLN for the basilica (8 PLN reduced), with the tower a separate 20 PLN — and the tower is closed from November to April, and closed to under-8s year round. Tourist entry is by the side door on plac Mariacki, not the main west door, which is for worshippers. Inside: Veit Stoss's limewood altarpiece of 1489, twelve metres high, opened ceremonially every morning at 11:50, and a starred blue vault by Jan Matejko. On the hour, a trumpeter plays the hejnał from the taller tower and cuts the last note off mid-phrase — the story is that a watchman was shot in the throat mid-warning during a Tatar raid. It is played to all four compass points and takes four minutes; stand in the square for it rather than paying to be up there.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: the basilica's own pages now list 20 zł normal / 10 zł reduced for the church; the stop says 15 zł (8 reduced), so the entry ticket has risen by a third. — checked 2026-08-15

Rynek Underground
sight · 90 min · PLN 36 · Podziemia Rynku, Rynek Główny 1, Kraków
Podziemia Rynku, Rynek Główny 1, Kraków
36 PLN adult, 32 reduced. Hours are awkward and worth checking: Mon and Wed–Thu 10:00–19:00, Tue only 10:00–14:00 but free, Fri–Sun 10:00–20:00, and closed the second Monday of every month. If your day 1 can be a Tuesday morning, this is 36 PLN saved. Four metres beneath the square, a genuine archaeological site left in place under glass — the 13th-century market level, merchants' stalls, cart ruts, a smelting furnace and lead seals from the Hanseatic trade — presented with holograms and projections that could have been gimmicky and mostly are not. It is also the coolest place in the Old Town on a hot afternoon. Entrance is through the Cloth Hall on the east side; capacity is limited, so buy online in season.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: the Museum of Kraków's own branch page now charges 45 zł normal / 35 zł reduced; the stop says 36 / 32, so this is a 25% rise and the single biggest ticket drift in this file. — checked 2026-08-15

Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą
food · 45 min · PLN 30
Bar mleczny Pod Temidą, Grodzka 43, Kraków
Open Mon–Fri 09:00–20:00 only — no weekends, which is worth knowing before you walk down here. A bar mleczny is a milk bar: a state-subsidised canteen format from the communist era that survived into the present and still feeds students, pensioners and office workers for a fraction of restaurant prices. Expect 25–40 PLN for a full plate — schabowy, placki ziemniaczane, pierogi, żurek, and a good szarlotka. How it works: queue, order at the counter from a Polish-only board, pay, carry your own tray, bus your own table. Its English-language review footprint is thin (a few dozen reviews across platforms) because the clientele is local, so take this as a category recommendation as much as a specific one — any milk bar in the centre does the same job, and eating in one is the cheapest honest meal in Kraków.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the milk bar's own site now states "pon – niedz.: 9-20" — open seven days. — checked 2026-08-15

Wawel Cathedral
sight · 60 min · PLN 26 · Katedra Wawelska, Wawel 3, Kraków
Katedra Wawelska, Wawel 3, Kraków
26 PLN individual (18 reduced), and note it is ticketed separately from the castle by a different operator — the two are on the same hill but not the same ticket, which catches people out. The price covers the cathedral, the climb to the Sigismund Bell, the royal crypts, the Cathedral Museum and the Archdiocesan Museum. Ticket office is in the house opposite the cathedral door. This is where Polish kings were crowned and buried for four centuries, and where the national poets and Piłsudski lie too — the crypts are the reason to come. The Sigismund Bell of 1520 needs eight ringers and is rung only for events of national significance. No photography inside; entry to the cathedral itself is free for prayer but the crypts and tower are not.

Wawel Royal Castlebook ahead
sight · 120 min · PLN 57 · Zamek Królewski na Wawelu, Wawel 5, Krakówbook ahead
Zamek Królewski na Wawelu, Wawel 5, Kraków
Closed Mondays, which is the constraint that fixes this day. Tickets are sold by route rather than as one admission: the State Rooms on the second floor or the Private Royal Apartments on the first are 57 PLN each (43 reduced), both floors together 95 PLN, and the Crown Treasury, Armoury and Castle Underground are 47 PLN each. One floor is the right choice on a three-day trip — take the State Rooms for the Renaissance arcaded courtyard views and the Flemish tapestries. The grounds, the courtyard and the terraces overlooking the Vistula are free, so the hill costs nothing to walk. Timed entry applies and the routes sell out in summer; book ahead on wawel.krakow.pl. Down at the river below the walls is the Wawel Dragon sculpture, which breathes real fire every few minutes.

Miód Malina, Grodzka 40, Kraków
Google 4.5 across 4,200+ reviews and Tripadvisor 4.3 across 3,100 — a rare thing on Grodzka, which is the Old Town's main tourist artery. Polish cooking with a Mediterranean lean in a small warm room of exposed brick and painted folk motifs: żurek in a bread loaf, pierogi, duck with apples, wild boar; 60–160 PLN a head. Five minutes from the foot of Wawel, so it closes the day where the day ends. Reserve — it is small, popular and turns walk-ins away most evenings.

Day 2 — Kazimierz and the ghetto across the river in PodgórzeKazimierz and the ghetto across the river in Podgórze

09:30
Szeroka Street, the Old Synagogue and the Remuh Cemetery
sight · 90 min · PLN 15 · ulica Szeroka, Kazimierz, Kraków
ulica Szeroka, Kazimierz, Kraków
Around 15 PLN for the Remuh synagogue and cemetery; Szeroka itself is a public square and free to walk. Kazimierz was a separate town until 1800 and the centre of Jewish Kraków for five centuries, and seven synagogues still stand here — that survival, rather than any reconstruction, is what distinguishes this from Warsaw's vanished Jewish quarter. The Remuh is the only one still in regular religious use; its cemetery of 1535 has a wall built from gravestone fragments smashed by the Germans and pieced back together after the war. The Old Synagogue at Szeroka 24 is the oldest in Poland and now a museum branch. Closed Saturdays for Shabbat, and men need a head covering (provided). Go before the Kazimierz bar crowd surfaces; mornings here are quiet and residential.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: price holds at about 15 zł for the Remuh synagogue and cemetery and Szeroka itself is still a free public square, but the Remuh is closed to tourists on Saturdays and Jewish holidays — the stop schedules 09:30 on… — checked 2026-08-15

Galicia Jewish Museum

Galicia Jewish Museum, Dajwór 18, Kraków
35 PLN adult, 25 reduced, open daily 10:00–18:00 — a useful thing on a day when the synagogues keep religious hours. In a converted furniture factory five minutes east of Szeroka. Its permanent exhibition, Traces of Memory, is not artefacts but photographs: Chris Schwarz spent years photographing what is physically left of Jewish Galicia across southern Poland — overgrown cemeteries, synagogues turned into cinemas and warehouses, empty fields where communities were. It answers the question the rest of the day raises, which is what absence actually looks like eighty years on. Small, an hour is enough, and the bookshop is the best in the city on the subject.

Plac Nowy and a zapiekanka at the Okrąglak
food · 45 min · PLN 20 · Plac Nowy, Kazimierz, Kraków
Plac Nowy, Kazimierz, Kraków
15–25 PLN and the most Kraków lunch there is. Plac Nowy was Kazimierz's Jewish market square; the round brick building in the middle — the Okrąglak, built in 1900 as a kosher poultry slaughterhouse — now has hatches cut into it selling zapiekanki, a halved baguette baked with mushrooms and cheese and then loaded with whatever you point at. Endzior is the stall people queue longest for. Eat it standing up. The square holds a clothes and flea market most mornings and a proper farmers' market on Saturdays, and the surrounding streets are where Kazimierz's bar scene lives after dark. Cash is still quicker than card at the hatches.
NOTE · field note · CHANGED: the Okrąglak's interior has been rebuilt as "Jatka 2.0", a food hall of stalls that the Polish press explicitly describes as a place without zapiekanki. — checked 2026-08-15

Ghetto Heroes Square and the Pharmacy under the Eagle
sight · 75 min · PLN 25 · Plac Bohaterów Getta 18, Podgórze, Kraków
Plac Bohaterów Getta 18, Podgórze, Kraków
Around 25 PLN for the pharmacy museum (a small Museum of Kraków branch — its branch prices change, so check muzeumkrakowa.pl; current listings show free admission on Wednesdays). Walk over the Father Bernatek footbridge from Kazimierz, about 15 minutes: the ghetto was not in Kazimierz. In March 1941 the Germans moved Kraków's Jews across the river into Podgórze, and this square is where the deportation round-ups were staged — the 70 empty steel chairs standing on it, one for each thousand people held here, are set out to echo the furniture left in the street after the ghetto was cleared. On the corner, Tadeusz Pankiewicz's pharmacy was the only Polish-run business allowed to stay inside the ghetto walls; he and his staff used it to pass medicine, food and information, and it is now a museum in four small rooms. Remnants of the ghetto wall survive on ulica Lwowska, ten minutes south.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the branch's own page gives opening as Wednesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00 — it is shut Mondays AND Tuesdays, which the stop does not mention at all, and day 2 has no fixed weekday in this itinerary. — checked 2026-08-15

Fabryka Emalia Oskara Schindlera, Lipowa 4, Kraków
Budget 40–60 PLN adult — current sources disagree (one gives 40 PLN, another 60 with 45 reduced) and the Museum of Kraków revises its branch tariffs, so plan for 60 and check muzeumkrakowa.pl before you go (checked 2026-07-25). It is free on Mondays, though free days cannot be pre-booked. Ignore the tour operators selling this at 200 PLN and up; that is a reseller markup of three to four times the museum's own price for the same admission, and it is the single biggest money trap in Kraków. Hours: April–October Mon 10:00–16:00 and Tue–Sun 09:00–20:00; November–March Mon 10:00–14:00 and Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00. Ten minutes' walk east of the ghetto square. Two things to understand before you go: the permanent exhibition, Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939–1945, is about the whole occupied city rather than the film, and it is long, dense and text-heavy — allow two hours minimum. Schindler's actual office is preserved on the route. The separate MOCAK contemporary art museum shares the site if you want a decompression stop afterwards.
NOTE · field note · PRICE RESOLVED, HOURS FLAGGED: the branch's own page settles the stop's 40-vs-60 uncertainty at 60 zł adult / 45 reduced, so the stop's "plan for 60" is right and can stop hedging. — checked 2026-08-15

Marchewka z Groszkiem, Mostowa 2, Kraków
Restaurant Guru 4.8 across 5,800+ reviews; Tripadvisor is more reserved at 4.2, around #197 of 1,962. Back across the footbridge in Kazimierz, a small candlelit room doing home-style Polish and Galician cooking — pierogi, potato pancakes with goulash, plum dumplings — at roughly 60–100 PLN a head. The name means 'carrot with peas', which tells you the register: this is domestic cooking, not a tasting menu, and the service is warm rather than slick (the one recurring complaint in reviews is that it can be slow when full). Booking is sensible at weekends. If you would rather eat Middle Eastern after a heavy day, Hamsa on Szeroka is five minutes away.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
