Ten days following Leonardo da Vinci's life in the places it happened, all in euros and all but one leg by train. Milan gives you the Last Supper, his vineyard, his notebooks and his pupils; Florence the workshop where he learned, the three early paintings in the Uffizi and the room where his lost battle mural was begun; then a day walking up to the farmhouse at Anchiano where he was born. A day in the Vatican finds the unfinished Saint Jerome and his face on Raphael's Plato, before the one flight, to the Loire, where he spent his last three years at the Clos Lucé, is buried in the chapel at Amboise and may have given Chambord its staircase. It ends in Paris: Fontainebleau, where the king kept the Mona Lisa, the Louvre on a late-opening night, and a pupil's full-size copy of the Last Supper at Écouen. The weekdays are the hard constraint. Start on a Tuesday: it keeps Milan off a Monday, when the Last Supper shuts, and off a Wednesday, when the Ambrosiana does; it puts the Uffizi on a Thursday, the Vinci day on a Friday rather than a Sunday, when the bus runs once, and the Louvre on a Wednesday late opening. Book the Last Supper first, the moment its three-month block opens, then the Uffizi, the Vatican and the Louvre. Budget covers every ticket, train, bus, the Rome to Paris flight and the listed meals; beds and the flights in and out are extra.

Day 1 — Milan: the notebooks, the pupils' church and the wallMilan: the notebooks, the pupils' church and the wall

08:30
Malpensa Express to Milano Cadorna
travel · 40 min · €15
Fifteen euros one way, 37 minutes, every half hour from both Malpensa terminals, and Cadorna is the right end of the city for this trip: five minutes' walk from the Last Supper. Change there to the green M2 one stop to Lanza for Brera, where tonight's bed is. Landing at Linate instead, the blue M4 runs to San Babila on an ordinary city ticket in about 12 minutes.

09:30
One night in Brera
lodging · 20 min · free · Brera, Milano
Brera, Milano
Sleep in Brera rather than by the station. Everything today and tomorrow morning is a walk from here: the Ambrosiana 15 minutes south, Corso Magenta 20 minutes west, and tomorrow's statue and canal lock both within ten. Drop the bags and go.
10:00
Pinacoteca Ambrosiana
sight · 105 min · €19
Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Piazza Pio XI 2, Milano
Start with Leonardo's handwriting rather than his paint. Seventeen euros plus 1.50 to book online; open 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:30, and closed on Wednesdays, which is the rule that fixes this day. Three things to find. The Portrait of a Musician, the only portrait of a man Leonardo is known to have painted. Raphael's full-size cartoon for the School of Athens, the drawing he transferred to the wall in the Vatican on day 5, where Plato is traditionally given Leonardo's face. And in the Sala Federiciana, a rotating handful of original sheets from the Codex Atlanticus, the largest surviving body of his drawings. That codex went to Paris in 1796 with Napoleon's army along with twelve smaller notebooks; in 1815 only the codex came back, and the twelve are still in Paris, in the building you stand outside on day 8.

12:15
Trattoria Milanese
food · 75 min · €30
Trattoria Milanese, Via Santa Marta 11, Milano
Five minutes west on a quiet lane, cooking the city's dishes since 1933: risotto alla milanese, ossobuco, cotoletta on the bone. The room is old and the senior waiters are brisk, which regulars count as part of it. Open Monday to Saturday 12:00 to 14:30 and from 19:00, closed Sunday. Book a table the day before.
€30
13:45
San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore
sight · 40 min · free
San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, Corso Magenta 15, Milano
Free, eight minutes west, and the best place in Milan to see what Leonardo did to the painters around him. Every inch of the walls is frescoed, much of it by Bernardino Luini, the most gifted of the Lombard painters who took up his soft modelling and half-smiling faces; walk through to the nuns' hall behind the altar wall, which is the richer half. Open Tuesday to Saturday 09:30 to 17:30 and Sunday afternoon, closed Monday.

sight · 45 min · €15 · Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano, Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie 2, Milanobook ahead
Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano, Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie 2, Milano
The one booking that decides your dates. Fifteen euros for exactly fifteen minutes in the refectory, and you must be at the desk 30 minutes before your slot or the ticket is forfeited, so this time is the check-in for a 15:15 entry. Tickets are released in three-month blocks at noon Milan time (in June for August to October, in September for November to January, in December for February to April, in March for May to July), with a further batch for the following week every Wednesday at noon; online sales are capped at five tickets per person per year, and tickets cannot be changed or refunded. Open Tuesday to Sunday 08:15 to 19:00, closed Monday. In the room: Leonardo worked in tempera and oil on dry plaster rather than true fresco so he could paint slowly, and the wall began flaking within his lifetime; the doorway cut through the bottom centre in 1652 took Christ's feet, which a pupil's copy you see on day 10 still shows.

15:30
Santa Maria delle Grazie
sight · 30 min · free
Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milano
Free, next door, no ticket. Ludovico Sforza, the duke who paid for the Last Supper, rebuilt the east end of this church as his family's mausoleum; the domed tribune is Bramante's, and Leonardo and Bramante were both on the Sforza payroll in the same years. Dress with shoulders and knees covered.
16:15
La Vigna di Leonardo
sight · 60 min · €12 · Casa degli Atellani, Corso Magenta 65, Milano
Casa degli Atellani, Corso Magenta 65, Milano
Across the street, behind the Casa degli Atellani. Ludovico gave Leonardo this vineyard in 1498 as payment in kind while he was painting the refectory; Leonardo kept it through the French occupation and left it in his will. The vines you see were replanted from the original grape, Malvasia di Candia aromatica, after the roots were identified by DNA analysis. Twelve euros with the audioguide, open daily 09:00 to 18:00; weekend visits must be booked, weekdays you can walk in.

food · 90 min · €40book ahead
Risoelatte, Via Camperio 6, Milano
Twelve minutes east, between the castle and the cathedral, in a dining room fitted out as a 1960s Milanese flat with the jukebox to match. Order a risotto: alla milanese, or al salto, the crisp fried cake made from yesterday's. About 40 euros with wine; open every day but reservations are required.

08:30
Monumento a Leonardo da Vinci, Piazza della Scala
sight · 20 min · free · Piazza della Scala, Milano
Piazza della Scala, Milano
Free, ten minutes from Brera. Pietro Magni's marble Leonardo went up in 1872 facing the opera house, and the four figures round the base are his Milan pupils: Boltraffio, Marco d'Oggiono, Cesare da Sesto and Salai. Remember d'Oggiono; his copy of the Last Supper is the last stop of this trip.
09:00
Conca dell'Incoronata
sight · 30 min · free
Conca dell'Incoronata, Via San Marco, Milano
Free, a 15-minute walk north up Via Brera. This dry stone lock at the end of Via San Marco is the last stretch of the Martesana canal left inside the old walls; the canal itself was filled in 1929 to 1930. Leonardo studied its gates in the 1480s, and the drawings are in the Codex Atlanticus you saw yesterday. The angled gates that meet in a point against the flow, still how canal locks close today, are traditionally credited to him.
09:45
Metro M2 Lanza to Milano Centrale
travel · 20 min · €2
Collect the bags from the hotel and ride the green line four stops. An ordinary ticket is 2.20 euros; tap a contactless card at the gate and skip the machine.

10:35
Frecciarossa Milano Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella
travel · 115 min · €35
About 1 hour 55 minutes. Trenitalia's Frecciarossa and Italo both run the line several times an hour; booked two to three months ahead, standard class is typically 20 to 45 euros, and walk-up fares can pass 60. Seats are reserved, so board your own carriage.

12:45
Da Nerbone
food · 45 min · €10
Da Nerbone, Mercato Centrale, Piazza del Mercato Centrale, Firenze
Five minutes from the station, on the ground floor of the covered market, selling Florence's working lunch since 1872. The order is the lampredotto panino, slow-simmered tripe in a roll, asked for bagnato so the bread is dipped in the broth; the bollito sandwich is the choice for the unconvinced. Around 10 euros with a glass of wine; open Monday to Saturday 07:00 to 14:00, closed Sunday. Come straight from the train, because the stall shuts at two.

Three nights near the Duomo
lodging · 30 min · free · Piazza del Duomo area, Firenze
Piazza del Duomo area, Firenze
Three nights in one bed covers Florence, the Vinci day and an easy start to Rome. Stay anywhere inside the ring between the Duomo and the river and every Florence stop is a walk.
14:30
Museo Nazionale del Bargello
sight · 90 min · €12
Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Via del Proconsolo 4, Firenze
Twelve euros; open Tuesday to Sunday 08:15 to 18:50 since the March 2026 timetable, closed Monday. Leonardo trained in Andrea del Verrocchio's workshop from his teens, and this is where Verrocchio's sculpture lives. In the Donatello room stands his bronze David of the early 1470s, a slim, smiling boy; a long tradition, impossible to prove, says the teenage Leonardo was the model. Compare it with Donatello's languid David in the same room, then find Verrocchio's marble Lady with a Bunch of Flowers upstairs, whose hands some scholars read as Leonardo's first work in stone.

16:15
Museo di Palazzo Vecchio
sight · 105 min · €19 · Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Firenze
Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Firenze
Eighteen euros plus 1 euro presale, cashless even at the desk. Open Friday to Wednesday 09:00 to 19:00 but Thursday only until 14:00, with last entry an hour before closing. The Salone dei Cinquecento is the room where, in 1504, the republic commissioned Leonardo and the younger Michelangelo to paint two battle scenes on facing walls. Leonardo's Battle of Anghiari was begun with an experimental technique that failed, Michelangelo's never got past the cartoon, and Vasari covered the walls with his own battles in the 1560s. Look high on the east wall for a tiny banner reading cerca trova, seek and you shall find; a 2012 search drilled small holes through Vasari's fresco looking for Leonardo behind it, and was halted with the question still open.

Osteria Vini e Vecchi Saporibook ahead
food · 90 min · €35book ahead
Osteria Vini e Vecchi Sapori, Via dei Magazzini 3r, Firenze
One alley behind the Palazzo Vecchio, a single tiny room with a handwritten menu of Tuscan dishes: pici, ribollita, tripe, whatever the kitchen braised that day. About 35 euros. Open Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner, closed Sunday; phone ahead, because the queue without a booking is long.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
