Four days built around the only thing that makes Mexico City navigable: neighbourhoods. Day 1 stays inside the flat, walkable Centro Histórico — deliberately, because the city sits at about 2,240 m and day one is where altitude bites, so nothing here is uphill and nothing starts before 09:30. Day 2 is the Bosque de Chapultepec pairing that no first visit should skip (Anthropology in the morning, the castle after lunch), ending on foot in leafy Condesa. Day 3 is the Teotihuacán day trip done independently by bus rather than by coach tour, and day 4 is Coyoacán in the morning — Casa Azul, the market, Trotsky's house — then back north to Roma Norte for the afternoon and the trip's best dinner. Two bookings decide whether this works: the Frida Kahlo Museum sells online only and routinely sells out weeks ahead, and Máximo Bistrot needs a reservation. One more thing fixes the shape of the whole trip: every museum here except the Torre Latino closes on Mondays, so don't start this itinerary on a Sunday. Prices are 2026 INAH foreign-visitor rates, checked 25 July 2026.

Day 1 — Centro Histórico on the flat — Aztec city under the colonial oneCentro Histórico on the flat — Aztec city under the colonial one

09:30
Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución) and Catedral Metropolitana
sight · 60 min · free · Zócalo, Centro Histórico
Zócalo, Centro Histórico
Start here and start late — at 2,240 m most people feel the first day as mild breathlessness and a dull headache, so drink more water than feels necessary and go easy on alcohol tonight. The cathedral is free and open daily; it is an active church, so avoid walking through Mass. The visible tilt of the floor is real: the whole Centro is sinking into the old lakebed.
10:45
Templo Mayor
sight · 105 min · MX$210 · Museo del Templo Mayor, Seminario 8
Museo del Templo Mayor, Seminario 8
The Mexica Great Temple, found by accident in 1978 by electricity workers, plus its excellent site museum. Open Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays. 210 MXN for foreign visitors in 2026 (105 MXN for Mexican nationals and residents); Sunday free entry applies to nationals/residents only. Walk the outdoor ruins first while the light is good, then the museum's eight halls.
MX$210
12:45
El Cardenal
food · 75 min · MX$350
El Cardenal, Calle de la Palma 23
Institution since 1969, and the standard-setter for traditional Mexican breakfast and lunch in the Centro. Open 08:00–18:30 (Sunday from 09:00) — it is not a dinner restaurant. No reservations at the Palma branch; arrive at opening or expect a wait at weekends. Order the hot chocolate frothed at the table and the pan de nata.
MX$350
14:15
Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes
sight · 75 min · MX$75 · Palacio de Bellas Artes, Av. Juárez s/n
Palacio de Bellas Artes, Av. Juárez s/n
The single best place to see Mexican muralism without a reservation: Rivera's 'Man, Controller of the Universe' (the repainted Rockefeller Center mural), plus Orozco, Siqueiros and Tamayo on the upper floors. Museum open Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays; 75 MXN, free on Sundays. The art-deco interior and the Tiffany glass curtain are worth the ticket alone. Note: the Palacio Nacional murals are the more famous Rivera cycle but need an advance reservation with the finance ministry and tours get cancelled for government business — that is why they are not in this plan.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: general admission is 90 MXN in 2026 against the stop's 75 MXN — a 20% rise, corroborated by the Secretaría de Cultura's own SIC listing and a 2026 national-press price piece. — checked 2026-08-15
MX$75
15:45
Museo Mural Diego Rivera
sight · 45 min · MX$30
Museo Mural Diego Rivera, Balderas 202
One room, one painting, thirty pesos: 'Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda Central', Rivera's 15-metre parade of four centuries of Mexican history, moved here after the 1985 earthquake wrecked its hotel. Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays; free for everyone on Sundays. Walk to it across the Alameda Central itself — the oldest public park in the Americas, and the shaded benches halfway across are the rest this altitude-adjusting first day is built around.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: the Secretaría de Cultura's own listing gives 45 MXN, half again the stop's 'one room, one painting, thirty pesos'. — checked 2026-08-15

17:30
Mirador Torre Latinoamericana
sight · 60 min · MX$220 · Torre Latinoamericana, Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas 2
Torre Latinoamericana, Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas 2
Go up an hour before sunset: the point is watching the valley's scale register — the city runs to the mountains in every direction. 220 MXN for the 44th-floor mirador in 2026, open daily 09:00–22:00 (last entry 21:30), so it is the one attraction here that also works on a Monday. Tickets at the ground-floor desk or online.

Azul Histórico, Isabel la Católica 30
Ricardo Muñoz Zurita's regional Mexican cooking in the tree-filled stone courtyard of a 17th-century palace — the most atmospheric dinner in the Centro. Open daily to 22:00–23:00. Reserve, especially for a courtyard table; the covered gallery is the wet-weather fallback. Chiles en nogada appear roughly August–September only.

09:00
Museo Nacional de Antropología
sight · 180 min · MX$210
Museo Nacional de Antropología, Paseo de la Reforma s/n
The reason people come back to Mexico City. Open Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, closed every Monday of the year; 210 MXN for foreign visitors in 2026. Three hours is the honest minimum and you still will not see it all — if you must triage, do Teotihuacán, Mexica (the Sun Stone) and Maya on the ground floor and skip the ethnography level upstairs. Arrive at opening; school groups land mid-morning.
MX$210
12:30
Los Panchos
food · 75 min · MX$250
Los Panchos, Tolstoi 9, Anzures
Carnitas since 1945, a 15-minute walk north of the museum across Reforma into Anzures — a normal working-lunch room rather than a tourist stop. Open daily 09:00–22:00. Order carnitas surtidas by weight with tortillas on the side; the queso fundido is the thing everyone regrets not ordering.
MX$250
14:00
Castillo de Chapultepec (Museo Nacional de Historia)
sight · 120 min · MX$210 · Castillo de Chapultepec, Bosque de Chapultepec 1ª Sección
Castillo de Chapultepec, Bosque de Chapultepec 1ª Sección
The only royal castle in the Americas — Maximilian and Carlota's residence, later the presidential one. Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays, 210 MXN for foreigners, free for everyone on Sundays. Clearing of the rooms starts at 16:45, so 14:00 is the latest sensible arrival — the access ramp from the park gate is a steady 15-minute climb at altitude before you even reach the ticket desk (there is a shuttle for reduced-mobility visitors). The terrace view down Reforma and the Orozco and Siqueiros murals inside are the highlights.
NOTE · field note · PRICE CLAIM WRONG FOR THE AUDIENCE: the stop says the castle is 'free for everyone on Sundays'. — checked 2026-08-15

Parque México and Avenida Amsterdam
sight · 75 min · free · Parque México, La Condesa
Parque México, La Condesa
Condesa in one loop: Avenida Amsterdam traces the oval of a 1920s horse-racing track, ringed by some of the best art-deco housing in Latin America, and Parque México at the centre is where the whole neighbourhood walks its dogs at dusk. About 25 minutes on foot from the castle gate, or a short ride. Free, and the right decompression after two museums.

Lardo, Agustín Melgar 6, Condesa
The Rosetta group's Condesa all-day room — Mexican-Mediterranean, wood oven, unfussy. Monday–Saturday 07:00–22:30, Sunday to 17:30, so this is a Monday-to-Saturday dinner. Book a day or two ahead; the terrace tables go first.

Every venue in this itinerary was checked against current public sources — opening hours, prices, closures — before it was published. Stops that aren't venues — transit legs, walks between them — aren't in the count.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
