Almost everything worth seeing in Munich used to belong to one family and now belongs to the state that replaced them. The Wittelsbachs' town palace is a museum you walk through in slippers over the parquet, their picture collection is the Alte Pinakothek, their summer house is Nymphenburg, their hunting park is the biggest beer garden on earth, the court brewery still brews under state ownership, and the canal they dug for the palace grounds now produces a standing wave that people surf in the middle of the city. That transfer, from private estate to public property, is what makes Munich feel like a much bigger capital than its size and why so much of it is cheap or free. Day one is the old town and the Residenz, day two is the Blue Rider painters and a long walk through the English Garden to a beer garden under a Chinese pagoda, day three is the summer palace, the 1972 Olympic park and the one Munich institution that never was royal, BMW. Two calendar rules. Day one cannot be a Sunday, because the Viktualienmarkt stalls are shut; days two and three cannot be a Monday, because the Lenbachhaus, the Alte Pinakothek and the BMW Museum all close. A Monday works only as day one. Beer gardens and the Nymphenburg park pavilions run roughly April to mid-October, which is the window this is written for. Dachau is deliberately not in these three days: it needs a half day at absolute minimum and it does not belong wedged between a palace and a beer garden, so give it its own. Around 240 euros a head covers every ticket, the airport train, a day pass and every listed meal; beds and flights are on top.

08:30
S1 or S8 from Munich Airport to Marienplatz
travel · 45 min · €28
Both S-Bahn lines run from the airport to Marienplatz, S8 in about 40 minutes and S1 a little longer; they leave every 20 minutes and there is no separate express. The figure here is the whole trip's public transport: the Airport-City-Day-Ticket at 17.50 euros, which is the airport run plus unlimited travel across the network for the rest of day one, and one Single-Tageskarte for zone M at 10.10 euros for day three, which is the only day with real distance in it. Day two is walkable end to end. A single ride inside the city is 4.20 euros if you would rather pay per leg. Buy in the MVV or MVG app, or at a machine; do not board without a validated ticket, the inspectors are frequent and unsympathetic.

Marienplatz and the Neues Rathaus Glockenspiel
sight · 50 min · free · Marienplatz, Neues Rathaus
Marienplatz, Neues Rathaus
The Glockenspiel in the town hall tower runs at 11:00 and 12:00 all year and adds a 17:00 show from March to October, so arriving a little before the hour is the whole timing of this stop. It lasts about twelve minutes and it is worth exactly one viewing. The building is neo-Gothic and finished in 1908, which surprises people who assume it is medieval. Fill the wait in the arcaded courtyard behind it or at the Fischbrunnen on the square, and stand back towards the Alter Peter side rather than under the tower, where you see nothing.

St. Peter (Alter Peter) tower climb
sight · 45 min · €5 · Alter Peter, Rindermarkt 1
Alter Peter, Rindermarkt 1
Five euros and 306 steps up Munich's oldest parish church, open daily 09:00 to 19:30 in summer. This is the view everyone wants and the one photograph of Munich that works: the Neues Rathaus and the Frauenkirche's twin onion domes from above, with the Alps on the horizon on a clear day. There is no lift and the stair is narrow and two-way, so it is not a stop for anyone unsteady. Bring coins: the desk inside the door is small and cash is the reliable way to pay, and older guides still quote the pre-increase 3 euro fare.

Viktualienmarkt and its beer garden
food · 75 min · €14
Viktualienmarkt
A hundred-odd stalls on ground the city bought in 1807 when the market outgrew Marienplatz, open Monday to Saturday and shut on Sundays, which is why this day cannot be a Sunday. Eat by grazing: a pair of Weisswurst before noon at one of the stalls, cheese and Brotzeit boards, and a Schmalznudel, the plate-sized fried doughnut, at Café Frischhut on Prälat-Zistl-Straße just off the square. The beer garden in the middle rotates its beer between the six Munich breweries every six weeks, and under Bavarian beer garden rules you may sit at the unlaid tables with food you bought at the stalls and buy only the drink, which is the cheapest good lunch in the old town.

13:45
Asamkirche (St. Johann Nepomuk)
sight · 30 min · free · Asamkirche, Sendlinger Straße 32
Asamkirche, Sendlinger Straße 32
Ten minutes west down Sendlinger Straße, and free. The Asam brothers built this in the 1730s next to their own house, with their own money, for themselves, and only opened it to the public under pressure — which is why it is 22 metres wide, has no straight lines left in it, and is the densest piece of rococo in Germany. It takes ten minutes to see and thirty to stop looking. Closed during Mass; a sign on the door gives the times. Photography without flash is fine.
14:45
Residenz München: Residenzmuseum and Schatzkammer
sight · 150 min · €15 · Residenz München, Residenzstraße 1
Residenz München, Residenzstraße 1
The combination ticket for the palace rooms and the treasury is 15 euros, against 10 each separately; adding the Cuvilliés Theatre makes it 20. Open daily, which is unusual here — the Bavarian palace administration does not take Mondays off — 09:00 to 18:00 from late March to late October and 10:00 to 17:00 in winter, last entry an hour before. Do the Antiquarium first: a 66-metre barrel-vaulted Renaissance hall from the 1570s, the largest north of the Alps, and the room that tells you what scale this family operated at. The treasury's crown of an English queen and the Statuette of St George are the two things to find. The audioguide is free and included, and most of what you see was rebuilt after 1945 from photographs, which the labels say plainly.

17:30
Hofgarten, Odeonsplatz and the Theatinerkirche
sight · 45 min · free
Hofgarten, Odeonsplatz
Straight out of the palace's north door. The Hofgarten is the court garden, laid out in 1613 and public since the 19th century; on most fine evenings there are people dancing tango under the Diana pavilion in the middle, which is not staged. The yellow Theatinerkirche on Odeonsplatz is free to enter and worth five minutes for the white stucco. All of it is free, which is the point of putting it after the one expensive ticket of the day.

Wirtshaus in der Aubook ahead
food · 100 min · €32book ahead
Wirtshaus in der Au, Lilienstraße 51
Twenty minutes on foot across the Isar into Au, or two stops on the S-Bahn to Rosenheimer Platz. The house has been a dumpling specialist since 1901 and still is: bread dumplings, pretzel dumplings, spinach dumplings, and a Schweinsbraten to put them under. It is 4.3 on Tripadvisor across roughly 1,700 reviews and ranked inside Munich's top 50, and it sits far enough off the tourist line that the room is mostly local. Around 32 euros with a half-litre. Book — this is the one meal in these three days that needs it.

Day 2 — The Blue Rider, the old masters, and a long walk to the beer gardenThe Blue Rider, the old masters, and a long walk to the beer garden

10:00
Lenbachhaus
sight · 120 min · €10
Lenbachhaus, Luisenstraße 33
Ten euros with the audioguide included, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 and Thursdays to 20:00, closed Monday. This is the reason to start here rather than at the big galleries: the Lenbachhaus holds the largest collection anywhere of the Blaue Reiter, the group Kandinsky, Marc, Münter and Macke ran out of Munich and Murnau from 1911, and it exists because Gabriele Münter handed over 1,000 works she had hidden from the Nazis in her cellar. The rooms are hung under a long-run presentation, Über die Welt hinaus, that runs from March 2026 to September 2027. The Kunstbau downstairs is shut for the whole of 2026 for refurbishment, so do not plan around it.
NOTE · field note · PRICE holds at EUR 10 with EUR 6 reduced and the audioguide included, under-18s free; open 10:00-18:00 Tuesday to Sunday with Thursdays to 20:00, closed Monday. — checked 2026-08-15

Alter Simpl
food · 75 min · €20
Alter Simpl, Türkenstraße 57
Ten minutes east into the student streets of Maxvorstadt. Open from 11:30 every day and running late, it has been a pub since 1903 and took its name from the satirical magazine Simplicissimus whose writers drank here; the walls still carry the drawings. Bavarian and central European cooking, generous rather than refined, around 20 euros for a plate and a beer, 4.1 on Tripadvisor and 4.2 across a much larger Google sample. No booking needed at lunch.
€20
13:45
Alte Pinakothek
sight · 120 min · €9
Alte Pinakothek, Barer Straße 27
Nine euros, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 with Tuesday and Wednesday running to 20:00, closed Monday. Ludwig I built it in the 1820s specifically to put the family's pictures in front of the public, and it is still one of the great old-master collections: the largest group of Rubens anywhere, Dürer's self-portrait as Christ, Altdorfer's Battle of Alexander. Two hours is a first pass, not a tour. On Sundays admission drops to 1 euro, which this three-day order cannot reach without putting day three on a Monday — if you are in Munich over a Sunday anyway, that is the morning to come back.

Eisbachwelle river surfers
sight · 30 min · free · Eisbachwelle, Prinzregentenstraße bridge, Englischer Garten
Eisbachwelle, Prinzregentenstraße bridge, Englischer Garten
Twenty minutes east on foot, at the bridge where the Eisbach enters the English Garden beside the Haus der Kunst. The Eisbach is not a river but a diverted arm of the Isar dug to feed the court gardens, and a set of concrete blocks on the bed throws up a standing wave about a metre high that surfers have been riding since the 1970s. They queue on both banks and take turns; it runs all year, in wetsuits, in the dark, in snow. Free, takes as long as you let it, and it is the single most Munich thing in this itinerary. The water is fast and cold and the wave is for experienced surfers only, which the signs say bluntly.
NOTE · field note · The stop's "it runs all year" was true of the tradition and is no longer true of the record. — checked 2026-08-15

Englischer Garten: the Monopteros and Kleinhesseloher See
sight · 50 min · free · Monopteros, Englischer Garten
Monopteros, Englischer Garten
The park was laid out in 1789 on the Elector's hunting ground and opened to everyone from the start, which was the radical part; at 375 hectares it is larger than Central Park. Walk north from the wave to the Monopteros, a small Greek temple on an artificial mound that gives the best view back over the city's spires, then on past the lake. Two things worth knowing: nude sunbathing on the Schönfeldwiese is legal, normal and unremarkable here, and the meadows are for lying on, not keeping off.
18:15
Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm
food · 100 min · €18
Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm, Englischer Garten 3
Seven thousand seats under chestnut trees around a wooden pagoda first built in 1790, with a brass band playing from the tower's first floor at weekends. Rated 4.0 on Tripadvisor across about 485 reviews and 4.2 across a far larger sample elsewhere; the complaints are about queues at peak, not the beer. Understand the two halves before you sit: the self-service tables are unlaid, you carry your own food from the counters and you may legally bring your own, while the waited section costs more for the same beer. A Mass is around 12 euros with a deposit on the glass you get back at the Pfand window. It runs roughly April to October and closes when the weather does.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
