Six days on one volcano's worth of Italy: three nights in Naples, then two on the Amalfi Coast, moving by commuter train, minibus, ferry and coast-road bus rather than by car. The order is the argument. Naples comes first because the National Archaeological Museum holds almost everything worth seeing that was lifted out of Pompeii and Herculaneum, so the frescoes and the bronzes go into your head on day 2 and the bare rooms they came out of make sense on days 3 and 4. Then the coast the same eruption built: a hike along the cliff between Agerola and Nocelle, a paper mill in a ravine, and two gardens above Ravello. Capri is deliberately not here. It needs a day of its own and it is the one place on this coast that gets worse the more time you give it in a rushed schedule. Two things fix the calendar. Start on a Thursday or a Friday, because both Naples days depend on museums that close on Tuesday and Wednesday: the archaeological museum and the Sansevero Chapel shut Tuesdays, and the San Gennaro catacombs and the Fontanelle ossuary shut Wednesdays. And run it between April and October, because the Sorrento and Positano ferries this itinerary uses do not sail outside that window and the cliff path is only reliably open April to November. Roughly 420 euros a head covers every ticket, every fare on the ground and every listed meal; beds and flights are on top, and beds are where the Amalfi half gets expensive, which is why the band here is a judgement about Campania rather than about the arithmetic.

09:30
Alibus from Naples Capodichino to Piazza Municipio
travel · 25 min · €5
The airport shuttle runs roughly every 20 minutes to Napoli Centrale and on to Piazza Municipio, near the port. 5 euros bought from the driver or a machine, 20 to 25 minutes. A city taxi from Capodichino runs on a fixed tariff instead of the meter and is worth naming out loud when you get in.

Sleep inside the old grid, between Via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli. Everything on days 1 and 2 is then on foot, and the Circumvesuviana platforms for days 3 and 4 are 15 minutes away at Garibaldi. Rooms on Via dei Tribunali are loud until well after midnight, which is either the point or the problem.

Via Francesco De Sanctis 19/21, Naples
Giuseppe Sanmartino's Veiled Christ, carved in 1753 from a single block, with the marble shroud clinging to the body underneath. Closed Tuesdays. 12 euros, 8 for 18 to 26, and every visit must be booked in advance with a timed slot: tickets open 60 days out and more are released two days before. The chapel is one room and holds few people, so a slot before noon is far calmer than an afternoon one. No photography.

L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele
food · 60 min · €8 · Via Cesare Sersale 1/3, Naples
Via Cesare Sersale 1/3, Naples
Two pizzas on the menu, marinara and margherita, and a doubled-mozzarella version of the second. Around 5 to 8 euros, plus a coperto and, increasingly, a tip prompt on the card machine that regulars simply decline. You take a paper number at the door and wait on the street; arriving at 12:15 rather than 13:30 is the difference between 10 minutes and an hour. Closed Sundays. Cash is smoother than card here. The fame cuts both ways and the reviews split on it: this is the cheapest famous pizza in Naples, not the best one, and the two other pizzerias in this itinerary are the ones locals argue about.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the current listing has it open every day 10:30-23:00, which contradicts the stop's "Closed Sundays" - the error now runs in the reader's favour, but the note would send a Sunday visitor elsewhere for no reason. — checked 2026-08-15

Via dei Tribunali 253, Naples
A working charity founded in 1602 whose octagonal chapel still has the altarpiece it commissioned: Caravaggio's Seven Works of Mercy, painted here in 1607 and never moved. 8 euros, 5 reduced. Open 10:00 to 18:00 with last entry 17:30, and 09:00 to 14:30 on Sundays. The upstairs picture gallery is included and mostly empty. The cathedral is 100 metres further along the same street if you want the San Gennaro chapel too.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: the operator now charges EUR 10 full and EUR 8 reduced (under-25s and groups of 15+), against the "8 euros, 5 reduced" in the stop and the est_cost of 8. — checked 2026-08-15

A hundred metres along the same street, and free. The cathedral is open daily from about 08:00, and the silver-and-marble chapel off the right aisle is the one to walk into: it holds the ampoules of San Gennaro whose blood is expected to liquefy three times a year in front of a packed nave. Chapel hours are roughly 08:30 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday, with a later afternoon session on Sundays. Access to the chapel itself costs nothing; the treasure museum next door is a separate paid ticket and can be skipped. Underneath the cathedral, the fourth-century Basilica of Santa Restituta and the excavations below it are also ticketed separately.
NOTE · field note · HOURS confirmed and slightly tighter than the stop states: 08:30-13:00 and 14:30-18:00 Monday to Saturday, but 08:30-13:00 and 16:30-19:30 on Sundays and holidays, last admission 30 minutes before each close, and no vis… — checked 2026-08-15

Greek tufa quarries turned Roman aqueduct turned wartime air-raid shelter, 40 metres under the street, plus a Roman theatre reached through somebody's bedroom. Guided only, 90 minutes, tours hourly 10:00 to 18:00 with English departures usually on the even hours. 10 euros at the desk. Part of the route is a candle-lit passage about 60 centimetres wide, skippable at a fork. Piazza San Gaetano is the top of Via San Gregorio Armeno, the lane of year-round nativity-figurine workshops, so walk down it afterwards.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: two current sources put adult admission at EUR 15 (students 11-24 EUR 10, children 5-10 EUR 8) against the EUR 10 in the stop and est_cost; a third still lists EUR 9, so the figure is contested, but nothing curre… — checked 2026-08-15

Via Eldorado 3, Naples
Walk down Via Toledo and through the Galleria Umberto I to the seafront, then out along the causeway to the Norman castle on its islet. Free. Treat the inside as a bonus rather than a plan: the castle has been under a long maintenance programme and the interior rooms and upper ramparts open and close without much warning, while the causeway, the outer walls and Borgo Marinari at the foot of it are always accessible. Even from outside this is the one spot in the city where Vesuvius, the bay and the whole waterfront line up at sunset, and Borgo Marinari is a small harbour of moored boats and restaurants. Allow 35 minutes for the walk down.

The reason to do Naples before the excavations. The Alexander Mosaic, the Farnese Bull and Hercules, the bronzes from the Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum, and the Gabinetto Segreto of erotic material that was locked away for a century all sit here rather than on site. 20 euros, 2 for EU 18 to 25, free on the first Sunday of the month, though on free days the Egyptian collection, the Secret Cabinet and the Magna Graecia rooms stay shut. Open 09:00 to 19:30, last entry 18:30. Closed Tuesdays. Three hours is the honest minimum; the mosaic floor and the Villa dei Papiri rooms are the two to protect if you run short.

Ten minutes uphill from the museum and directly on the way into the Sanità, which is the reason it lands here rather than anywhere else. Come for the fried half of Neapolitan pizza as much as the baked one: the montanarina, a disc of dough deep-fried and then finished in the oven with tomato and smoked provola, and a proper folded pizza fritta. Closed Mondays, otherwise 12:00 to 15:30 and 19:00 to midnight. Around 12 to 18 euros with a drink. There is usually a queue at 13:30 and rarely one at 12:45.

Two levels of second-century burial galleries cut into the tufa, with fifth-century frescoes and the tomb that held the city's patron saint. Guided only, departures roughly hourly, 10:00 to 17:00, closed Wednesdays. 13 euros adult, 9 over-65, 6 students, and the ticket also covers the San Gaudioso catacombs for a year. Entrance and ticket office are beside the Basilica Madre del Buon Consiglio. It is run by a cooperative of young people from the Sanità, which is where the money goes. 15 to 22 degrees underground, so bring a layer.

A quarry cavern holding the anonymous bones of tens of thousands of plague and cholera dead, and the site of the capuzzelle cult in which Neapolitan women adopted a skull, cleaned it and prayed to it in exchange for favours. It reopened on 19 April 2026 after five years shut, so older guidebooks say it is closed. Entry is free but must be reserved online. Open 10:00 to 18:00 with last admission 17:15, closed Wednesdays. Walk back down through the Sanità and stop in the courtyard of this 1738 palazzo for Ferdinando Sanfelice's double-ramp staircase, an open hawk's-wing of arches on five floors. Free, the gate is normally open in daylight, and people still live here, so it is a courtyard rather than a museum. Palazzo Sanfelice at Via Sanità 6 has the sibling staircase five minutes away.

Via Giovanni Paladino 51, Naples
A small room that serves one thing: ragù napoletano, beef and pork held at a mutter for six hours or more, over pasta or simply with bread to mop it. Around 10 to 20 euros a head. Lunch and dinner sittings roughly 12:30 to 15:30 and 19:00 to 23:30, though the weekend hours move, so check the day you go. No reservations at the Paladino branch and a queue from about 20:00, so either eat at 19:00 or accept a wait with a drink. Vegetarian and vegan ragùs are on the menu, which is not a given in this city.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
