Five days built the way New York actually works — one borough-cluster per day, almost no backtracking, and everything walkable once the subway drops you off. Midtown's icons and a sunset deck; a downtown day that gives the Statue of Liberty ferry the half-day it genuinely needs before the 9/11 Museum; Central Park into the Met and the Guggenheim; a full day across the river in DUMBO and Williamsburg; and a west-side finale from the High Line to Katz's to a Broadway curtain. Watch two closure days when you pin dates: the Met is closed Wednesdays and the 9/11 Museum is closed most Tuesdays — the two days are easy to swap. Budget assumes the OMNY weekly fare cap, one steakhouse splurge, and one full-price Broadway ticket; strip those and the total drops by a third.

OMNY subway and bus fares (7-day fare cap)
travel · $35
Tap the same contactless card or phone at every turnstile all week. A single ride is $3.00 and OMNY caps you at $35 per rolling 7 days — after 12 rides the rest of the week is free, with nothing to pre-buy. The MetroCard 7-Day and 30-Day unlimited passes were retired in favour of this cap. Budgeted once here for the whole trip; it covers every subway and local bus leg below except the NYC Ferry on day 4.

09:00
Grand Central Terminal
sight · 45 min · free
Grand Central Terminal, 89 E 42nd St, New York
Free, open daily from 05:15. Start in the Main Concourse under the backwards zodiac ceiling (the restorers left one soot-black patch by the Cancer crab to show what 80 years of tobacco smoke did), then find the Whispering Gallery arches outside the Oyster Bar on the dining level — stand at diagonal corners and talk into the tile. Arrive before 09:30 and you get the commuter rush as theatre.
10:00
New York Public Library Stephen A. Schwarzman Building
sight · 45 min · free · NYPL Schwarzman Building, 476 5th Ave, New York
NYPL Schwarzman Building, 476 5th Ave, New York
Free. Mon–Sat 10:00–18:00 (Tue/Wed to 20:00); Sunday 13:00–17:00 but closed Sundays through July and August — if your day 1 is a summer Sunday, swap this for Bryant Park alone. Go up to the Rose Main Reading Room (free 30-min tours Mon–Sat at 11:20, 13:30 and 15:00) and see the Gutenberg Bible in the Treasures gallery. Exit into Bryant Park behind the building for the lawn, the carousel, and a coffee.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)book ahead
sight · 150 min · $30 · MoMA, 11 W 53rd St, New Yorkbook ahead
MoMA, 11 W 53rd St, New York
$30 adults, open daily from 10:30 (Fridays late to 20:30); under-16s free. Book a timed slot online — the walk-up line on 53rd St is the avoidable mistake. Go to floor 5 first for Van Gogh's Starry Night, Picasso's Demoiselles and Monet's Water Lilies before the 12:00 crowd, then work down. NY State residents get in free Friday evenings.

14:00
Los Tacos No. 1
food · 45 min · $18
Los Tacos No. 1, 229 W 43rd St, New York
The one genuinely good cheap lunch inside the Times Square blast radius — adobada carved off the trompo, handmade tortillas, three tacos and an agua fresca for about $18. Open Mon–Sat 11:00–24:00, Sun 11:00–22:00. Standing room only and the queue looks alarming; it moves in ten minutes. Cards fine.

15:00
Times Square and Rockefeller Center
sight · 75 min · free · Times Square, Broadway at W 45th St, New York
Times Square, Broadway at W 45th St, New York
Free. Do Times Square in daylight for ten honest minutes (the red TKTS steps are the photo), ignore the costumed characters who charge for pictures, then walk east on 47th/48th to Rockefeller Center — the sunken plaza, the Prometheus statue, and the Art Deco lobby of 30 Rock. Come back through Times Square after dark later in the trip; the neon is the whole point and it's free.
16:30

Top of the Rock, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York
$47–60 depending on date and slot; open daily 09:00–24:00, last entry 23:00. Booked here deliberately over the Empire State Building: from the 70th floor you look south at the Empire State Building with Central Park at your back, which is the view you actually want in the photo. Book the slot ~45 min before sunset to get daylight, golden hour and the lit skyline on one ticket — sunset slots sell out first. Two open-air levels, no glass on the top tier.

Keens Steakhouse, 72 W 36th St, New York
The trip's one splurge — an 1885 chophouse with 50,000 clay churchwarden pipes on the ceiling (Babe Ruth's and Teddy Roosevelt's among them) and the mutton chop nobody else still makes. Tripadvisor 4.5 from 7,000+ reviews. Expect $90–110 a head with a drink; the Pub Room menu is the cheaper way in and takes walk-ins. Reserve for the dining rooms. Ten minutes on the B/D/F/M from Rockefeller Center to 34th St–Herald Square.

08:15
Castle Clinton National Monument
sight · 30 min · free · Castle Clinton, Battery Park, New York
Castle Clinton, Battery Park, New York
Free. The 1811 fort in Battery Park that processed 8 million immigrants before Ellis Island opened — and today the only legitimate Statue City Cruises ticket booth in Manhattan. Anyone selling 'Statue tours' on the promenade outside is selling a harbour cruise that never lands. Arrive 45 min before your boat: airport-style screening is the bottleneck, not the ferry.

sight · 120 min · $26 · Liberty Island, New York Harborbook ahead
Liberty Island, New York Harbor
$25.50 adult round-trip ferry (2026), which covers both islands, the audio guide and both museums — Statue City Cruises is the only NPS-authorised operator. First boats from about 09:00, every 20–30 min. Crown tickets are $25.80 but sell out 3–4 months ahead; pedestal access is worth requesting when you book. Take the first boat you can: the 11:00 sailings are where the two-hour queues live. Budget the whole morning for both islands.

Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration
sight · 90 min · free · Ellis Island, New York Harbor
Ellis Island, New York Harbor
No extra charge — included in the ferry ticket. The Registry Room upstairs is the room 12 million people walked through; the free American Family Immigration History Center lets you search the passenger manifests by surname. Most people skip this island because they're tired of queuing, and it is the better of the two. Last return ferries mid-to-late afternoon by season — check the posted board when you land.
13:30
Eataly NYC Downtown
food · 60 min · $28
Eataly NYC Downtown, 101 Liberty St, 4 World Trade Center, New York
Third floor of 4 WTC, a 15-minute walk from the ferry terminal and directly on the way to the memorial. Pasta, pizza or a mozzarella counter plate for around $25–30, plus a terrace looking at One World Trade. Open daily from breakfast to late; counters seat walk-ins. Gansevoort Liberty Market inside the Oculus is the cheaper food-hall alternative two minutes further on.

9/11 Memorial — Reflecting Absence pools
sight · 30 min · free · 9/11 Memorial, 180 Greenwich St, New York
9/11 Memorial, 180 Greenwich St, New York
Free, open daily 08:00–20:00, no ticket. The two acre-sized voids sit exactly on the tower footprints, with the names of all 2,983 victims cut through the bronze parapets. Look for the single Callery pear — the 'Survivor Tree' — recovered from the rubble in October 2001 and replanted here. Walk the north pool before you go into the museum; the outdoor memorial reads very differently afterwards.

National September 11 Memorial & Museum, 180 Greenwich St, New York
$33 adults. Open Wed–Mon 09:00–19:00, last entry 17:30, and closed most Tuesdays — this is the day to move if your dates force a Tuesday. Free Monday evenings 17:30–19:00, but those tickets release online at 07:00 that morning and go in minutes. Book a timed slot. The descent to bedrock past the slurry wall and the Last Column is the spine of it; the In Memoriam gallery is quiet and the historical exhibition is not — it plays live audio from the morning. Allow 2–3 hours and expect to need air afterwards.

Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center
sight · 30 min · free · Oculus, 185 Greenwich St, New York
Oculus, 185 Greenwich St, New York
Free. Calatrava's white ribbed hall over the PATH station — deliberately shaped like a bird released from a hand, and every 11 September the skylight is opened at 10:28, the minute the north tower fell. Two minutes' walk from the museum exit and the right decompression after it. It's also a shopping mall, which is jarring; that's part of the story of the site now.
19:00
Adrienne's Pizzabar
food · 90 min · $40
Adrienne's Pizzabar, 54 Stone St, New York
On Stone Street — a cobbled 17th-century lane closed to traffic, with tables down the middle and the Financial District drinking at them. The thin square 'old-fashioned' pie is 18 inches and feeds two easily; about $30–40 a head with a beer. Open from 11:30 daily, to 22:00 Sun/Mon, 23:00 Tue/Wed, midnight Thu–Sat. No reservations for small parties — put your name down and wait on the street with everyone else.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
