A 2,050 km self-drive circuit from Christchurch: over the Canterbury plains to the Mackenzie dark-sky country, up the Hooker Valley under Aoraki, across the Lindis to Queenstown, into Fiordland for Milford Sound, then north over the Haast Pass to the glaciers and home through Arthur's Pass. Every day opens with one driving leg broken into sub-legs with real times, because South Island distances lie on a map — the roads are two-lane, winding and full of one-lane bridges, and planning by kilometres is how people end up arriving after dark. Two decisions are made explicitly rather than left implied: Milford is done as a day trip from Te Anau, not the 12-to-14-hour round trip from Queenstown, and Franz Josef gets one night with the free valley walk rather than a heli-hike that does not fit in ten days. This is a summer-to-autumn plan (roughly November to April), when the alpine passes are open without chains and the light lasts past dinner.

Costed at NZD 450 per person — a ten-day compact SUV runs roughly NZD 75–120 a day in shoulder season and NZD 95–160 a day from late December to February, split between two people. Solo travellers: double this line. This is a loop back to Christchurch, so there is no one-way drop fee; that is the single biggest cost difference from a Route 66-style linear drive. You drive on the left, and the two moments that catch right-hand-drive visitors are pulling out of a rural car park and coming off a one-lane bridge — both feature daily on this route. Take the full excess-reduction cover: gravel side-roads (Clay Cliffs, Tasman Valley, Hokitika Gorge) and windscreen chips are the standard claims here, and standard cover usually carries a NZD 3,000–4,000 excess. If your licence is not in English you legally need an International Driving Permit or a certified translation. Unrelated to the car but due before you land: the NZeTA (NZD 23 online) and the NZD 100 International Visitor Levy, neither of which is in this budget.

Drive Christchurch Airport to the city centre (12 km, ~20 min)
travel · 20 min · NZ$5
Fuel throughout this itinerary is costed at NZD 0.12 per km per person — about 8 L/100 km at NZD 3.08 a litre for 91-octane (national average, 20 July 2026), split two ways. Over the full 2,050 km loop that is roughly NZD 505 for the car, NZD 250 each. Cards work at every pump and most are 24-hour pay-at-pump; you never need cash on this route except for the odd honesty box. Fill up in the towns, not at the last pump before a pass — see day 7 (no fuel on the Milford Road at all) and day 9 (Haast to Fox is 120 km of nothing).

Riverside Market
food · 60 min · NZ$25
Riverside Market, 96 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch Central
Two floors of stalls beside the Ōtākaro Avon — dumplings, Sri Lankan hoppers, South Island cheese, oysters — and the clearest single expression of what post-earthquake Christchurch turned into. Stalls run 07:30–20:00 daily. This is also where to buy road food: the supermarket alternative is a Countdown or New World, and stocking a chilly bag here for the Mackenzie and the West Coast is the biggest lever on a New Zealand food budget after the car.

Quake City

Quake City, 299 Durham Street North, Christchurch Central
NZD 25 for adults, NZD 20 seniors and students, under-15s free with an adult; open 10:00–17:00 daily except Christmas Day. Canterbury Museum's earthquake exhibition — the cathedral rose window, survivor testimony, and the liquefaction footage that explains why half the central city is new. Do not plan on Canterbury Museum itself: the main building has been closed for its NZD 247 million redevelopment and is not due to reopen until late 2028 or 2029, which most guidebooks and half the blogs still get wrong. Quake City and the free Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū (10:00–17:00, until 21:00 Wednesdays) are what is actually open.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens, Rolleston Avenue, Christchurch Central
Free, grounds open 07:00 until dusk (the conservatories close 16:30). Twenty-one hectares inside a loop of the Ōtākaro Avon, with a rose garden, an oak-lined riverbank and the 1863 Cuningham House glasshouse. Walk out through Hagley Park to the Bridge of Remembrance and the Transitional 'Cardboard' Cathedral if you have the legs — the whole circuit is flat. Jet lag management: you have a 08:30 departure tomorrow and a big day, so this is deliberately the low-effort end of the day.

One night, and the pick is a parking decision as much as a bed one: it has its own on-site parking, which several of the Cathedral Square hotels do not, and you are collecting a car within an hour of landing. Tripadvisor 4.0, #20 of 151 in Christchurch. Doubles run roughly NZD 180–260. Ten minutes' walk from the Botanic Gardens and five from New Regent Street. Lodging is not included in the budget figure — reckon on NZD 160–280 a night across this route, with Queenstown, Te Anau and Mt Cook Village the three that need booking furthest ahead.

Up a flight of stairs above the pastel Spanish Mission shopfronts of New Regent Street, one of the few pre-quake streets that survived intact — the tram runs underneath your window. Modern New Zealand cooking: Canterbury lamb, Akaroa salmon, a short list of South Island wine. Open from 17:00 daily; mains NZD 42–52. Book, especially Thursday to Saturday.

Day 2 — Across the plains to the Mackenzie and a dark-sky night (overnight: Lake Tekapo)Across the plains to the Mackenzie and a dark-sky night (overnight: Lake Tekapo)

08:30
Drive Christchurch to Lake Tekapo (SH1 and SH8, 227 km, ~2 h 55 net driving)
travel · 175 min · NZ$28
Per-leg: Christchurch → Geraldine 138 km / 1 h 45 (SH1 to Rangitata, then SH79) · → Fairlie 44 km / 35 min · → Burkes Pass 25 km / 20 min · → Lake Tekapo 20 km / 15 min. The open-road limit is 100 km/h and the plains section is genuinely fast; everything after Fairlie is not. Burkes Pass is the doorway — you climb through a gap in the hills and the Mackenzie Basin opens out flat, brown and enormous. Speed cameras are real and rental companies pass the tickets straight through with an admin fee. If it is raining, the Inland Scenic Route 72 via the Rakaia Gorge bridge is the prettier alternative for the first hour and adds about 20 minutes.

Fairlie Bakehouse
food · 40 min · NZ$16
Fairlie Bakehouse, 74 Main Street, Fairlie
Open 06:00–16:30 daily. The salmon-and-bacon and the pork-belly pies are what the queue is for, and the queue is the point — this is the last proper bakery before the Mackenzie, and half the South Island stops here. NZD 8–12 a pie. Buy an extra one for tomorrow: there is no lunch on the Hooker Valley track.

13:30
Church of the Good Shepherd
sight · 45 min · NZ$5
Church of the Good Shepherd, Pioneer Drive, Lake Tekapo
Grounds free and always open; NZD 5 tap-to-donate at the gate, and it is worth paying — the church is a working parish paying for its own upkeep, not an attraction. The interior is only open when a volunteer guide is on duty, roughly 10:00–15:00 Wednesday to Sunday, and that is not guaranteed; photography inside is not allowed at all. Plan on the outside and the altar-window view up the lake being what you get. Note for 2026 planning: the church and grounds close 20–29 May for earthquake strengthening of the bellcote. The lakefront stones are covered in cairns people build — the church asks you not to.

14:30
Mt John Summit Track
sight · 120 min · free
Mt John Summit Track, Lakeside Drive, Lake Tekapo
Free on foot: the summit circuit from the Tekapo Springs end is about 3 km and 1 h 30 return, climbing 300 m through larch to a 360° rim above the lake. Driving up instead costs NZD 8 per vehicle — the road is private, maintained by the University of Canterbury, and the toll is genuinely worth it in bad weather or with tired legs. The Astro Café at the summit is glass on all four sides and runs daylight hours only; treat it as a bonus, not a plan. This is the wind-exposed part of the day — the Mackenzie gets a nor'wester with no warning.

Lake Tekapo Village Motel, 24 Rapuwai Lane, Lake Tekapo
One night in the village centre — chosen so that tonight's stargazing tour is a five-minute walk home at midnight rather than a drive on an unlit rural road with the highest concentration of tired drivers on the loop. Tripadvisor 4.0, #3 of 5 in Lake Tekapo, 800+ reviews. Units roughly NZD 190–280. Tekapo has about 500 beds and sells out completely in January; book this one and Mt Cook Village together, months ahead.

Salmon sashimi and don from the Mackenzie canal farms, 40 km up the road, in a room with a plate-glass wall onto the lake. Lunch 11:30–14:00 and dinner 18:00–20:30 — the kitchen shuts hard at 20:30 and it is closed Sundays, so this has to be an early dinner, which suits a stargazing night anyway. Book: it is the best table in the village and a coach can fill it. Mains NZD 30–45.

Dark Sky Project Base, 1 Motuariki Lane, Lake Tekapo
NZD 129 for adults (5+), 75 minutes, at Cowan's Observatory — three telescopes in sunken craters that block the wind and the last of the light. The Summit Experience at the Mt John research observatory is NZD 219 and 1 h 45 if you want the 16-inch dome. Departure times are set by darkness, not by the clock: in December and January nothing starts before about 22:30, in April it is around 20:00, and mid-winter tours run from about 19:00. Cloud gets you an indoor astronomy session, a reschedule, a voucher or a refund — but you only get one night here, so book the earliest slot of your stay, not the last. You are in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve: 4,300 km² with lighting rules, and on a clear moonless night the Magellanic Clouds are visible with the naked eye from the motel car park for nothing.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
