Osaka's motto is kuidaore — eat until you drop — and this four-day plan takes it literally while still covering the first-timer sights. Day 1 works the Minami food core (Kuromon market breakfast, Michelin-listed okonomiyaki, takoyaki, Dotonbori neon, a 1946 udon house); day 2 pairs Osaka Castle with Kita's depachika, the Umeda Sky Building and a 1950s alley of standing bars; day 3 runs Shitennoji to Shinsekai kushikatsu to wagyu yakiniku in Japan's biggest Koreatown; day 4 goes to the Ikeda museum where instant ramen was invented, then Japan's longest shopping arcade and a farewell at an oden house that opened in 1844. Budget ~¥37,000 per person for four days of admissions, local transport and eating properly, lodging aside. Most of the eating is cheap — market stalls, ¥450 takoyaki, ¥120 skewers — and the spend concentrates in four line items: two observation decks (¥2,000 each) and the two sit-down dinners on days 3 and 4 (~¥5,000 each). Cut any of them and the trip still works.

09:15
Kuromon Ichiba Market
food · 90 min · ¥2,500
Kuromon Ichiba Market, Nipponbashi, Chuo-ku, Osaka
Osaka's 190-year-old kitchen, 580 m of covered arcade, ~150 shops. Come at 09:00–09:30: stalls are open, tour groups arrive after 11:00 and both queues and hustle get worse after 13:00. Graze 4–6 stalls — grilled scallop ~¥500, uni cup ~¥1,000, wagyu skewer ~¥2,000, tuna sashimi, fresh fruit. Many stalls are cash-only and many close Sundays and holidays, so don't put this day on a Sunday. Budget ¥2,000–4,000 a head.

11:15
Hozenji Yokocho
sight · 30 min · free
Hozenji Yokocho, Namba, Chuo-ku, Osaka
Free. Two stone-paved lanes of lantern-lit old Osaka, one block off the Dotonbori chaos. At the centre is Hozenji's Mizukake Fudo — a Buddhist statue so thickly covered in moss from visitors ladling water over it that it looks green-furred. Splash it and make a wish; it's the local ritual. Two minutes' walk from Mizuno.
12:00
Okonomiyaki Mizuno
food · 75 min · ¥1,800 · Mizuno, 1-4-15 Dotonbori, Chuo-ku, Osaka
Mizuno, 1-4-15 Dotonbori, Chuo-ku, Osaka
Dotonbori okonomiyaki since 1945, Michelin Bib Gourmand for six straight years, Tabelog 3.57. The yamaimo-yaki (grated mountain yam, no flour) is the house dish. Set expectations: Tripadvisor sits at 3.8 and the recurring complaint is service — orders are taken in the queue before you sit, can't be changed, and at busy times you will be moved along briskly. Come for the okonomiyaki, not the hospitality. Arriving before noon is the single best trick; at peak the wait runs to an hour. ¥1,500–3,000 per person; cards only above ¥3,000, so bring cash. Open daily 11:00–22:00.
NOTE · field note · open daily 11:00–22:00, confirmed; queue is now the dominant complaint (30–40 min before opening reported) and per-head spend is banded ¥2,000–2,999 against the stop's ¥1,800. — checked 2026-08-15

Amerikamura (Sankaku Koen), Nishishinsaibashi, Chuo-ku, Osaka
Free, and the right kind of walking-off-lunch. Amerikamura ('Amemura') is Osaka's vintage-and-streetwear quarter around Triangle Park; cross Midosuji into Shinsaibashi-suji, the 600 m covered arcade that runs north from Dotonbori. Both are 5 minutes from Mizuno on foot and lead straight back to the canal.
16:00

Wanaka Sennichimae Honten, 11-19 Namba Sennichimae, Chuo-ku, Osaka
The takoyaki benchmark, next to Namba Grand Kagetsu comedy theatre and in the Michelin guide three years running; Tripadvisor 4.2, #70 of 5,177 Chuo restaurants. Eight balls ¥450, dashi-rich batter, sauce/salt/soy/spicy 'doro' options. Mon–Fri 10:30–21:00, Sat–Sun 09:30–21:00. There's seating at the back if you don't want to eat standing. Namba Yasaka Shrine and its 12 m lion-head stage is a 10-minute detour south if you want one more free sight.
NOTE · field note · RECONCILED (SK-18, 2026-10-06): PRICE: the stop's 'eight balls ¥450' is stale — the same-day 2026-08-15 check of this venue in japan-10-days-golden-route found eight now ¥600.

Dotonbori and Ebisubashi Bridge
sight · 45 min · free · Ebisubashi Bridge, Dotonbori, Chuo-ku, Osaka
Ebisubashi Bridge, Dotonbori, Chuo-ku, Osaka
Free, and worth doing after dark when the signage is the point: the running Glico man (1935, now LED), the Kani Doraku mechanical crab, Kinryu's dragon. Ebisubashi is the classic photo spot — it's crowded, that's part of it. The canal-side Tonbori Riverwalk is the calmer parallel route.
19:15
Dotonbori Imai Honten
food · 60 min · ¥1,400
Dotonbori Imai Honten, 1-7-22 Dotonbori, Chuo-ku, Osaka
A deliberately quiet finish after a day of street food: a 1946 udon house behind a willow-shaded facade in the middle of the neon. The kitsune udon (¥700, two big sheets of sweet fried tofu) is what Osakans mean by dashi. Open 11:00–22:00 (L.O. 21:30), CLOSED WEDNESDAYS — swap days 1 and 2 if your day 1 is a Wednesday. Typical spend ¥1,000–2,000.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: now 11:30–21:30 (last order 21:00); the stop note says 'Open 11:00–22:00'. — checked 2026-08-15

¥1,200 adults (raised from ¥600 in 2025); under-16s free. Open daily 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; closed 28 Dec–1 Jan. Be there at opening — by 11:00 the lift queue is the whole experience. Eight floors of Hideyoshi/Osaka-siege museum ending on the 8th-floor outdoor deck. The 105 ha park around it is free.

Nishinomaru Garden
sight · 45 min · ¥200
Nishinomaru Garden, Osaka Castle Park, Chuo-ku, Osaka
¥200 (¥350 during cherry-blossom season). Open 09:00–17:00 Mar–Oct, to 16:30 Nov–Feb; CLOSED MONDAYS. The lawn inside the western bailey gives the postcard view of the keep over the inner moat, and it holds ~300 cherry trees. Honest read on the reviews: in blossom season it's one of Osaka's best hanami spots and worth every yen; the rest of the year visitors split, and a fair number call it a plain lawn you paid for. If it's not April, or if it's a Monday, walk the free moat circuit and the Otemon gate instead and keep the ¥200.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: the official city tourism page and the castle site both still say ¥200 (¥200 in blossom season too, only the hours extend) — resale sites now quote ¥300–¥350, which is NOT the gate price; treat ¥200 as correct. — checked 2026-08-15

Metro to Umeda
travel · 25 min · ¥240
Tanimachi Line from Tanimachi 4-chome to Higashi-Umeda, ~10 min, ¥240 (IC card). If you're doing three or more paid sights in one day, price up the Osaka Amazing Pass (¥3,500/1-day, ¥5,000/2-day) — it covers metro plus the castle tower and the Umeda Sky deck and would pay for itself today.

Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Department Store B1-B2, 8-7 Kakudacho, Kita-ku, Osaka
Japan's basement food halls are a food attraction in their own right, and Hankyu's two floors are the best in Kita: bento counters, ekiben, wagyu croquettes, patisserie, and a wall of samples. Assemble lunch for ¥1,000–2,000 and eat it in the eat-in corner or up in the store's 12F restaurant floors. Open daily ~10:00–20:00.

¥2,000 adults; open 09:30–22:30, last admission 22:00. Two towers joined at the 39th floor by a doughnut-shaped open-air roof deck 173 m up — you ride a glass escalator across the gap to get there. The rooftop can close in heavy rain. Free with the Osaka Amazing Pass before 15:00. A 10-minute walk from Osaka Station through the underpass; sunset is the slot to aim for if you can shift the day around.

Salon de AManTo Tengokusai, 1-7-26 Nakazakinishi, Kita-ku, Osaka
The walk is the attraction: 10–15 minutes from Umeda into the one central district the 1945 firebombing missed, low wooden houses turned into cafés, vintage shops and galleries. Salon de AManTo — ivy-swallowed, ~120 years old, the building that started the regeneration in 2001 — is the natural anchor and is open daily 12:00–22:00, ¥1,000–2,000. Set expectations rather than skip it: it rates 3.34 on Tabelog and food can take 30 minutes even when quiet, so order a coffee and cake, not lunch. Nakazakicho's cafés generally rate this way (Taiyo no To Honten, the other landmark, is 3.28); several close Tuesdays or Wednesdays and shut by 18:00, so wander first and sit wherever looks open.
NOTE · field note · open daily 12:00–22:00 and still the district's origin café, but the rating is unchanged-low and reviews stay split on food and service; the neighbourhood, not the café, is the reason to go — checked 2026-08-15

Shin-Umeda Shokudogai
food · 90 min · ¥2,800
Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, 9-26 Kakudacho, Kita-ku, Osaka
Under the elevated tracks between Osaka and Umeda stations: ~100 tiny shops opened in 1950 and barely changed since — yakitori counters, oden pots, standing bars, salarymen two-deep from 18:00. Matsuba Sohonten does kushikatsu standing-only from ¥120 a skewer (weekdays 14:00–22:00). Know what you're walking into: it rates 3.9 and reviewers reliably describe it as cramped and low-ceilinged, hours differ counter to counter, several are cash-only and some still allow smoking. That's the trade for 1950s Osaka at ¥2,000–3,500 for two or three stops. No reservations anywhere; go early if you want a stool.
NOTE · field note · trading, ~100 counters under the JR tracks; hours vary per shop, many cash-only, some still permit smoking. — checked 2026-08-15

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
