The compact first-timer's Oslo: day one walks the harbor arc from the Royal Palace through the National Museum, City Hall, and Akershus Fortress to the Opera House roof; day two is the Bygdøy museum peninsula (Folkemuseum, Fram, Kon-Tiki — note the Viking Ship Museum stays closed until late 2027); day three pairs the free Vigeland sculptures with Grünerløkka's food halls and the MUNCH tower. Daylight matters here: mid-June it's light past 23:00, but in December the sun sets around 15:15 — in winter, run the outdoor stops (Vigeland, Opera roof, Bygdøy) before 15:00 and save museums for the dark hours. The Bygdøy ferry only sails about April–October; bus 30 covers it year-round.

Day 1 — Harbor core: palace to the Opera roofHarbor core: palace to the Opera roof

09:00
Royal Palace and Karl Johans gate
sight · 60 min · free · Slottsplassen 1, Oslo
Slottsplassen 1, Oslo
Start at the palace park (grounds free, always open) and walk down Karl Johans gate past the National Theatre and Parliament — Oslo's main axis in one go. Changing of the guard at 13:30 daily if you'd rather loop back for it.
10:00
The National Museum (Nasjonalmuseet)
sight · 150 min · NOK 200 · Brynjulf Bulls plass 3, Oslo
Brynjulf Bulls plass 3, Oslo
NOK 200, under-18s free. Norway's biggest museum: one version of Munch's Scream, Dahl's landscapes, the design floors. Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00 (Thu to 20:00), closed Mondays — if your day 1 is a Monday, swap this day with day 3.
NOTE · field note · PRICE UNCERTAIN: the museum's own ticket pages would not render today (403 on the English ticket page, empty body on the Norwegian one); the only figure the Norwegian ticket page surfaces is 'Voksne 180 kr' against the… — checked 2026-08-15

12:45
Oslo City Hall (Rådhuset)
sight · 45 min · free · Rådhusplassen 1, Oslo
Rådhusplassen 1, Oslo
Free, open daily roughly 09:00–16:00. The hall where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded each December — the murals (including Munch's 'Life') repay a quick loop. Two minutes from the museum.
13:45
Vippa Oslo
food · 75 min · NOK 180 · Vippa, Akershusstranda 25, Oslo
Vippa, Akershusstranda 25, Oslo
Street-food hall in an old fjord-edge warehouse at Vippetangen — a dozen stalls (dumplings, Syrian, fish), mains NOK 150–200, fjord view from the outdoor benches. Closed Mondays; opens 12:00 other days. Walk the harbor promenade past Aker Brygge to get here.
NOK 180
15:15
Akershus Fortress
sight · 75 min · free · Akershus Festning, Oslo
Akershus Festning, Oslo
Grounds free, open roughly 06:00–21:00 — medieval castle, ramparts, and the best free view over the harbor you just walked. The interior castle museum is skippable on a first visit; the walls are the point. It's directly above Vippa.
17:00
Oslo Opera House roof walk
sight · 60 min · free · Operahuset, Kirsten Flagstads plass 1, Oslo
Operahuset, Kirsten Flagstads plass 1, Oslo
Free, always open: walk up the sloping white marble roof from the fjord edge for the classic Oslo photo over Bjørvika and the fjord islands. In winter do this in daylight (before ~15:00 in December) and mind ice on the marble; in June it's a midnight-sun-ish evening spot.
19:00
Kaffistova
food · 90 min · NOK 300
Kaffistova, Rosenkrantz' gate 8, Oslo
Traditional Norwegian since 1901 — raspeballer (potato dumplings), meatballs, rømmegrøt — at some of the fairest sit-down prices in the center (~NOK 250–300 a main). Open daily; 15-minute walk back through the center from the Opera.
NOTE · field note · unchanged at 3.6 a year on — cafeteria-style self-service reads low against restaurant expectations, and reviews split hard between 'honest traditional food at fair Oslo prices' and 'expensive, no service'. — checked 2026-08-15

Day 2 — Bygdøy: the museum peninsulaBygdøy: the museum peninsula

09:15
Bus 30 or ferry B9 to Bygdøy
travel · 25 min · NOK 44
Year-round: bus 30 from Nationaltheatret, ~15 min, stops at every museum. April–October the B9 ferry from Rådhusbrygge 3 (City Hall pier) is the scenic way over (~10 min crossing, standard Ruter ticket, NOK 44 in the app). Heads-up: the famous Viking Ship Museum is closed for rebuilding until late 2027 (reopening as the Museum of the Viking Age) — don't route around it.
NOK 44
10:00
Norsk Folkemuseum
sight · 150 min · NOK 200
Norsk Folkemuseum, Museumsveien 10, Oslo
NOK 200, under-18s free. Open-air museum of 160 relocated buildings — the 1200s Gol stave church is the showpiece, and in summer (May–Sep, open daily 10:00–17:00) there are costumed hosts, animals, and lefse baking. Winter: Tue–Sun 11:00–16:00, closed Mondays.
NOK 200
12:45
Kafé Arkadia
food · 60 min · NOK 150
Kafé Arkadia, Museumsveien 10, Oslo
The café at the Folkemuseum's main entrance — open sandwiches, salads, cakes; no museum ticket needed. Bygdøy is thin on lunch options between museums, so eat here before moving on.
NOK 150
14:15
Fram Museum
sight · 100 min · NOK 180 · Frammuseet, Bygdøynesveien 39, Oslo
Frammuseet, Bygdøynesveien 39, Oslo
NOK 180. Board the actual Fram — the wooden ship that carried Nansen and Amundsen toward both poles — plus a genuinely good polar-history exhibition. Open daily year-round (May–Sep 09:30–18:00). Bus 30 two stops from the Folkemuseum to Bygdøynes, or a 20-minute walk.
NOK 180
16:00
The Kon-Tiki Museum
sight · 60 min · NOK 180 · Kon-Tiki Museum, Bygdøynesveien 36, Oslo
Kon-Tiki Museum, Bygdøynesveien 36, Oslo
NOK 180, directly across the plaza from the Fram. Thor Heyerdahl's original balsa Kon-Tiki raft and the reed boat Ra II; new exhibitions opened in 2026. Open daily. If museum fatigue has set in, skip it and take the early ferry back — the Fram is the must-see of the pair.
NOK 180
17:15
Ferry or bus back to the center
travel · 25 min · NOK 44
The B9 ferry leaves from the Bygdøynes pier right by the Fram (seasonal); otherwise bus 30 from the same stop. Ruter single NOK 44 (60 min, transfers included).
NOK 44
19:00
Rorbua Aker Bryggebook ahead
food · 105 min · NOK 400 · Rorbua, Stranden 71, Oslobook ahead
Rorbua, Stranden 71, Oslo
Northern-Norwegian den at the far end of Aker Brygge — reindeer stew, boknafish, fishermen's-cabin clutter, and a stuffed polar bear (~NOK 350–450 a main). Tripadvisor 4.1; reserve on summer weekends. The Aker Brygge boardwalk at dusk is the right walk home.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
