Machu Picchu is booked in a fixed order, and that order is what shapes this trip. The entry ticket is date-, time- and circuit-stamped, it is sold against your passport number, and the morning slots on the classic circuit go three to four months out in dry season, so it is bought first and everything else is fitted around the hour it gives you. The train from Ollantaytambo is booked second, sixty to ninety days ahead; the shuttle bus and the guide can wait until you are there. If you would rather walk the Inca Trail than take the train, that permit jumps to the front of the queue at five to six months, and the trail is shut for maintenance the whole of every February. The second lever is where you sleep: three nights in the Sacred Valley at about 2,800 m before Cusco's 3,400 m, which is the gentler way to arrive at altitude and also the reason you stand on the Pisac terraces, the Ollantaytambo fortress and the 06:00 Machu Picchu gate ahead of the day-tour convoy that leaves Cusco each morning. Seven days, soles throughout, and every ticket priced at the foreigner rate you will actually be charged.

09:30
Cusco airport down to Pisac by road
travel · 75 min · PEN 120
Cusco airport sits at about 3,300 m and Pisac at about 2,970 m, so this first leg goes down, not up. That is the whole point of the arrangement: you spend three nights in the valley before sleeping at Cusco's 3,400 m. Fly into Cusco in the morning, because afternoon flights are the ones cancelled for wind. A pre-booked car for the airport to Pisac to Ollantaytambo day runs about 400 to 500 soles for the vehicle, so roughly 120 soles a head for two people. The cheap way is colectivo vans: Cusco (Calle Puputi) to Pisac is about 6 soles and takes an hour, Pisac to Urubamba about 5 soles, Urubamba to Ollantaytambo about 2 soles. Drink water, walk slowly, and skip alcohol today.

Mercado de Pisac

Plaza de Armas, Pisac
The market runs daily but it has a rhythm: Sunday is the big one, roughly 07:00 to 15:00, with the Quechua-speaking communities from the hills above the valley coming down and the plaza filling out into the side streets. Tuesday and Thursday are the middling days; the rest of the week it shrinks to the permanent textile stalls. Starting the week on a Sunday is what puts you here on the full version. Vendors pack up fast after 15:00. Cash only, and small notes.

Pardo 613, Plaza de Armas, Pisac
Half a block off the plaza and the long-standing traveller kitchen in Pisac: home-made bread and pasta, soups, a fixed-price lunch menu, and cakes that people come back for. A gentle first meal at altitude is the right call, so lean towards the soup rather than the largest thing on the menu.
NOTE · field note · CONFLICT: RestaurantGuru's venue page marks it "Permanently closed" at Amazonas 116, while other current listings show it trading at Pardo 613 (the stop's address) 08:00-21:00 daily; treat the closure flag as an unresol… — checked 2026-08-15

Buy the Boleto Turistico del Cusco here, at the gate, and buy the full one. The integral ticket is 130 soles for foreign adults, 70 soles for Peruvian nationals, and it covers sixteen sites on three circuits for ten days. This itinerary uses two of those circuits: Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Moray on Circuit III, and Sacsayhuaman, Q'enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay on Circuit I. Bought as two partial tickets that is 70 plus 70, so the full ticket is both cheaper and valid longer. Bring your passport. The site opens 07:00 to 17:00; the Cusco tour buses arrive around 10:00 and are gone by early afternoon, so mid-afternoon is quiet and the light across the terraces is better. Taxis run to the upper gate so you can walk down rather than up, which matters on day one.

Pisac to Ollantaytambo along the Urubamba
travel · 75 min · PEN 45
About 60 km down the valley through Calca and Urubamba. Ollantaytambo sits at roughly 2,790 m, lower again than Pisac, and it is where the train leaves from. That is the two-birds part of the plan: basing here for two nights removes the 04:00 start that a Cusco base forces on you for the Machu Picchu train, and it keeps you sleeping low while you acclimatise.

On the main plaza, and the strongest kitchen in the Sacred Valley by review consensus: Andean ingredients cooked properly, Sacred Valley beer, chicha and pisco infusions made in house. It is small and it fills, so book or turn up at opening. Alpaca and trout are what to order; the tasting menu is worth it if you are two.

Stay inside the old Inca grid rather than out on the highway: the streets north of the plaza are the ones with the water channels still running down them, and you can walk to the station and to the fortress gate in ten minutes. Reckon on 180 to 400 soles a night for a double in a village guesthouse. Nights are cold and few places have heating, so ask about blankets rather than assuming.

08:00
Hired car for the Moray, Maras and Chinchero loop
travel · 60 min · PEN 90
No public transport joins these three sensibly, so this is a hired car or taxi for the day out of Ollantaytambo: expect 180 to 250 soles for the vehicle, about 90 a head for two, agreed as a round trip with waiting time before you set off. Today is deliberately climb-high, sleep-low: Moray is around 3,500 m and Chinchero around 3,760 m, both higher than Cusco, and you come back down to 2,790 m to sleep. That is the standard acclimatisation pattern, and it is why the valley base does more work than a valley day trip would.

Moray
sight · 75 min · free
Moray, Maras district
Covered by the Boleto Turistico integral bought yesterday, so nothing more to pay. Three sets of concentric agricultural terraces sunk into the plateau, with a measurable temperature gradient between the top ring and the floor of the largest bowl. The descent into the main depression is closed to visitors; you walk the rim. Open roughly 07:00 to 17:00. Being here at nine puts you ahead of the Cusco full-day tours, which reach Moray around 11:00.

Salineras de Maras

Salineras de Maras
Not on the Boleto Turistico. It is a separate cash fee collected at the entrance and the current figure is quoted inconsistently: sources published this year give 10, 15 and 20 soles, with the 15 and 20 pair usually presented as a resident and non-resident split. Budget 20 soles in cash and expect to be charged whatever the board says. Search for it as Salinas de Maras rather than Salineras, which is how the listings are filed and also the name of an unrelated ranch near Urubamba. Thousands of terraced evaporation pans worked by families from Maras since before the Incas; the walkways between the pans were restricted after 2019, so you follow the marked upper path rather than wandering among them. Open roughly 08:00 to 17:00, though one operator lists 06:00 to 18:00.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: the split is now readable as a residency tier - S/15 for residents in Peru, S/20 for non-residents, cash only at the gate - so the reader of this itinerary pays S/20, which is what the stop budgets; a third figur… — checked 2026-08-15

Down in Urubamba at 2,870 m, which is the right altitude to eat properly at after a morning above 3,500 m. A garden restaurant doing Andean produce with a light touch, open for lunch and dinner; it fills with Sacred Valley hotel guests, so ring ahead in high season. Closed Sundays in some seasons, which is one reason this day is not the Sunday.

Chinchero archaeological complex
Covered by the Boleto Turistico integral. The colonial church sits directly on Inca foundations and its painted interior is the reason to come; the terraces below it are the other. Chinchero is also where the weaving cooperatives demonstrate the whole chain from raw alpaca through cochineal and other natural dyes to the finished cloth, and buying from a cooperative here is the least mediated way to do it in the region. At 3,760 m this is the highest you go all week, so take it slowly and do not plan anything strenuous afterwards.

Avenida Ventiderio, Plaza de Armas, Ollantaytambo
A light early supper on the plaza before an early night, because tomorrow starts on the fortress at seven. Simple homemade food, soups and box lunches, and a long-running social project attached to it, with a share of profits going to a foundation working with women and children in the valley. Worth knowing before you commit an evening to it: it has around a thousand reviews but no consolidated star rating that we could find anywhere, so treat this as the practical, well-liked choice rather than a scored one. It does breakfast too, which is what tomorrow uses it for.
NOTE · field note · CONFLICT: RestaurantGuru marks it "Permanently closed"; two 2026 Ollantaytambo guides list it as trading under new owner Jose Luis with 20% of profits still going to the foundation. — checked 2026-08-15

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
