Three days built as three walkable blocks: Old Town and the Jewish Quarter on foot, then the castle hill taken from the top down so it is all descent, then the New Town, Vyšehrad and the riverbank the day-trippers never reach. Prices are in Czech crowns, not euros — the country kept the koruna, shops quoting in EUR are giving you a bad rate, and paying by card in CZK is almost always better than accepting a terminal's currency conversion. The other thing to internalise is that Old Town Square is ringed by some of Europe's most efficient tourist traps: a laminated photo menu on the square means two to three times the going rate, and every restaurant in this itinerary is either two streets off it or the one square-side exception locals still name. Two timing rules save the trip: the Old Town Hall tower is half price in its first opening hour, and the Jewish Museum closes Saturdays and Jewish holidays — so day 1 cannot be a Saturday.

Day 1 — Old Town and Josefov on footOld Town and Josefov on foot

09:00
Old Town Hall Tower and the Astronomical Clock
sight · 60 min · CZK 175 · Staroměstská radnice, Staroměstské náměstí 1, Prague
Staroměstská radnice, Staroměstské náměstí 1, Prague
350 CZK standard — but the first hour after opening is 50% off, so arriving at 09:00 costs 175 CZK. Open daily 09:00–20:00 April–December, 10:00–19:00 January–March. Take the lift, not the ramp, and go up before the square fills: this is the view that puts the whole red-roofed centre and the castle on its hill into one frame, and by 11:00 the platform is shoulder to shoulder. The medieval halls and the chapel where the clock's apostles wait out the hour are on the same ticket.

10:15
Old Town Square and the Apostles procession
sight · 30 min · free · Staroměstské náměstí, Prague
Staroměstské náměstí, Prague
Free. The clock's apostle procession runs on the hour, 09:00–23:00, and lasts about 45 seconds — stand back near the Jan Hus monument rather than in the crush directly under it, where you can see the figures and the crowd at once. Also on the square: the twin gothic spires of Týn Church and the 27 white crosses set into the pavement outside the town hall, marking the Czech nobles executed here in 1621. Ignore every restaurant terrace on this square; see the dinner stop for the one exception.
11:00
Jewish Museum in Prague
sight · 150 min · CZK 600 · Židovské muzeum v Praze, Maiselova 15, Prague
Židovské muzeum v Praze, Maiselova 15, Prague
600 CZK for the full route, valid across 3 opening days. Open daily except Saturdays and Jewish holidays — this is the constraint that fixes the whole itinerary, so do not put day 1 on a Saturday. Summer 09:00–18:00, winter 09:00–16:30. One ticket covers the Maisel, Pinkas, Old-New and Spanish synagogues plus the Old Jewish Cemetery. The Pinkas Synagogue has 78,000 names of Czech Holocaust victims hand-painted on its walls, with the children's Terezín drawings upstairs; the cemetery next to it has twelve layers of graves stacked in a space the community was never allowed to expand. Not a cheap ticket, and worth every crown — but if the budget is tight, the Old-New Synagogue alone sells separately.

Lokál Dlouhááá
food · 75 min · CZK 350
Lokál Dlouhááá, Dlouhá 33, Prague
Five minutes from Josefov and the antidote to the square. A modern take on the Czech beer hall from the Ambiente group: short daily-changing menu chalked up, svíčková and schnitzel done properly, and unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell tanked and poured by people who care which of the four pour styles you want. Mains 200–350 CZK, a half-litre around 60 CZK — which is what beer should cost. Google 4.4 across 20,000+ reviews, Restaurant Guru 4.9. Long communal tables; no reservation needed at lunch, book for dinner.

Klementinum Baroque Library and Astronomical Towerbook ahead
sight · 60 min · CZK 380 · Klementinum, Mariánské náměstí 5, Praguebook ahead
Klementinum, Mariánské náměstí 5, Prague
380 CZK, 45-minute guided tour, eTicket only — capacity is small and the box office cannot promise walk-ups, so book ahead. The first two morning tours (09:00 English, 09:30 Czech) are half price if you would rather restructure the day around that. You view the 1722 library hall from the doorway rather than walking it, which is the point: nothing has been moved, down to the globes and the painted ceiling. Then the Meridian Hall, where Prague's official time was determined until 1918, and 172 steps up the tower for a bridge-level view.

Charles Bridge
sight · 75 min · free · Karlův most, Prague
Karlův most, Prague
Free, open 24h, three minutes from the Klementinum. Cross west toward Malá Strana in the late-afternoon light with the castle ahead of you, then come back along the Novotného lávka embankment for the postcard angle. Charles IV laid the first stone in 1357 and the thirty baroque statues came later — the one people queue to touch is St John of Nepomuk, thrown off this bridge in 1393. It is genuinely crowded from mid-morning to sunset; the bridge is empty and extraordinary before 07:00 if you are an early riser, which is the single best free thing in Prague.

Restaurace Mincovnabook ahead

Restaurace Mincovna, Staroměstské náměstí 7, Prague
The exception to this itinerary's own rule about Old Town Square: Mincovna sits right on it and is still the one locals name, rated 4.5 on Tripadvisor and ranked around #146 of 4,800+ Prague restaurants. In the vaults of an 18th-century mint, with old coins set into the walls. Czech classics — duck, goulash, svíčková — plus lighter modern plates; mains 250–450 CZK. Reserve, especially for a window table, and expect it to be busy rather than quiet.

08:45
Tram 22 to Pohořelec
travel · 30 min · CZK 30
The one piece of planning that makes this day work: ride tram 22 up to Pohořelec and walk the castle hill downwards all day instead of climbing it. From Národní třída or Malostranská, about 15 minutes. A 30-minute ticket is 30 CZK in the PID Lítačka app, a 90-minute one 46 CZK in-app or 50 CZK on paper, and a 24-hour ticket 150 CZK — fares rose on 1 January 2026, so ignore older figures. Validate paper tickets in the yellow box on board; inspectors work this tram hard because it is the tourist line.

Strahov Monastery Library
sight · 60 min · CZK 180 · Strahovská knihovna, Strahovské nádvoří 1, Prague
Strahovská knihovna, Strahovské nádvoří 1, Prague
180 CZK adult, open 09:00–17:00 with the library closing at 16:15 and last entry 16:30. Photography carries a small extra fee, paid at the desk. Two halls — the 1679 Theological and the 1794 Philosophical — viewed from the doorways, with a cabinet of curiosities in the connecting corridor that includes a pair of whale phalluses and a dried hammerhead, catalogued with total seriousness. Payment on site is in CZK only, card or cash. Come at opening: the halls hold about a dozen people comfortably.

Nový Svět lane
sight · 30 min · free · Nový Svět, Prague
Nový Svět, Prague
Free, and ten minutes downhill from Strahov. A crooked lane of low ochre and white cottages that was the poor quarter of Hradčany and is now the quietest street within a kilometre of the castle — Tycho Brahe and Kepler both lived along here. No shops, no stands, almost no one. Worth the detour precisely because the next stop is the opposite.
11:15
Prague Castle Circuit
sight · 180 min · CZK 450 · Pražský hrad, Hradčany, Prague
Pražský hrad, Hradčany, Prague
450 CZK for the 'Prague Castle – Circuit' ticket: St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane. Grounds, courtyards and gardens are free and open 06:00–22:00; the interiors run 09:00–17:00 April–October and 09:00–16:00 November–March. The ticket is valid two consecutive days but each interior only once. Airport-style security at the gates — allow 15–20 minutes in season. Inside St Vitus, walk to the third window on the left for Mucha's 1931 art-nouveau glass; in the Old Royal Palace, the Vladislav Hall is the room the Defenestration of 1618 was thrown out of, which started the Thirty Years' War.

Kuchyň, Hradčanské náměstí 12, Prague
In the Salm Palace on the castle square, which normally guarantees a tourist markup and here does not — Tripadvisor 4.4, around #195 of 4,785. There is no printed menu: you are walked into the kitchen to look at what is in the pots and point. Czech cooking from old aristocratic recipes, mains roughly 300–500 CZK, and a terrace with the view you would otherwise pay double for. Reserve for the terrace; the inside room is fine too.

Nerudova, the Lennon Wall and Kampa Island
sight · 90 min · free · Velkopřevorské náměstí (Lennon Wall), Prague
Velkopřevorské náměstí (Lennon Wall), Prague
Free, and all downhill. Walk Nerudova from the castle square, reading the house signs — the Two Suns, the Golden Horseshoe — that served as addresses before numbers existed. At the bottom, cut south to the Lennon Wall, painted over continuously since the 1980s when it was an anti-regime noticeboard the secret police kept whitewashing, then onto Kampa Island: a mill wheel, the Čertovka canal, Kafka's crawling bronze babies, and grass to sit on. This is the part of Malá Strana that rewards having no plan.

Café Savoybook ahead
food · 90 min · CZK 550book ahead
Café Savoy, Vítězná 5, Prague
Ten minutes south along the river from Kampa. An 1893 café with a restored neo-renaissance painted ceiling, run by Ambiente: Viennese-Czech cooking, a serious pastry counter, and a wine list good enough to be listed internationally. Tripadvisor 4.2; mains 300–600 CZK. It is popular enough that the queue on weekend mornings is real — for dinner, reserve and you walk straight in. Order the beef consommé and something off the cake trolley even if you are full.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
