“Use this itinerary” copies all 13 stops into a trip of your own, on your dates.

Rome's two unmissables both need a timed ticket and both eat half a day, so this itinerary gives each its own morning and never stacks them. The day order is not a preference: the Vatican Museums are CLOSED SUNDAYS, so on a Saturday–Sunday weekend the Vatican has to be Saturday and the Colosseum Sunday, and everything else is built around that. Afternoons are the reward — Prati and Trastevere on day one, Monti and the centro storico on day two, all on foot and all free. Book the Colosseum the moment your date opens: tickets are released at 09:00 Rome time exactly 30 days ahead and weekend slots go within hours. About €200 a head including both anchors and every meal.

Musei Vaticani, Viale Vaticano
€20 at the door, €25 online — the €5 is a pre-sale fee, and it is worth every cent, because the walk-up queue in season is measured in hours. Mon–Sat 08:00–20:00 with last entry at 18:00, per the museums' own site; CLOSED SUNDAYS except the last Sunday of the month, which runs 09:00–14:00 with last entry 12:30 and is free (free means unbookable, which means a crush — avoid it unless you enjoy that). The long day is worth knowing: an 18:00 last entry means a late-afternoon slot is a real option if your Saturday morning is spoken for, though you would then lose the basilica, which shuts earlier. This itinerary takes the 08:00 opening instead, because the Sistine is emptiest in the first hour and the route out puts you at St Peter's before the midday queue forms. There is no Sistine-only ticket: the chapel is the end of a one-way route, so budget the full three and a half hours rather than expecting to shortcut to it. Dress code is enforced at the Sistine and at St Peter's after it — shoulders and knees covered, both sexes, no exceptions at the door.

St Peter's Basilica
sight · 120 min · €10 · Basilica di San Pietro, Vatican City
Basilica di San Pietro, Vatican City
Free to enter, and if you take the Sistine Chapel's right-hand exit you arrive without re-queuing at the square — a genuinely useful shortcut that is not signposted. The dome is the paid part and the best €10 in Rome: €10 with the lift to the roof terrace then 320 steps up through the double shell, or €8 for all 551 on foot. Both end in the same lantern with the whole city under you. Dome open 07:30–18:00 in summer, to 17:00 in winter. The stairs narrow and curve with the dome near the top — genuinely tight if you are claustrophobic, and there is no turning back once you start the final flight.

Il Sorpasso, Via Properzio 31, Prati
Ten minutes east into Prati, the ordered nineteenth-century grid where Romans who work near the Vatican actually eat. Cured meats and cheese boards, pasta e fagioli, gnocchi — 4.2 on Tripadvisor across ~2,040 reviews, casual but not cheap-feeling. Recent reviews consistently flag the music as loud for conversation and the occasional cover charge, so it is a lively lunch rather than a quiet one. About €30. Reserve on a Saturday.

16:15
Via Giulia and Ponte Sisto
sight · 105 min · free · Via Giulia, Rome
Via Giulia, Rome
Cross the Tiber at Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II and drop onto Via Giulia — Bramante's dead-straight Renaissance street, ivy arch halfway down, antique dealers and almost no crowd, which is remarkable for something this central. Follow it south to Ponte Sisto and cross into Trastevere on foot. Free, about 25 minutes of actual walking, and the rest is stopping. This is deliberately the long way round from the Vatican: the direct route is a bus down the Lungotevere and it shows you nothing.
18:15
Piazza Trilussa and the Trastevere lanes
sight · 75 min · free · Piazza Trilussa, Trastevere
Piazza Trilussa, Trastevere
Over the bridge the fountain steps at Piazza Trilussa fill up at dusk with people drinking and talking, and from there the lanes — Via del Moro, Vicolo del Cinque, Via della Pelliccia — are the point. Ivy, laundry, cobbles that will punish thin soles. Free. Watch your bag on the crowded stretches after dark; this is the one part of the itinerary where pickpocketing is a live risk rather than a rote warning.
20:00
Otello in Trasteverebook ahead
food · 105 min · €40book ahead
Otello in Trastevere, Via della Pelliccia 47/53
Checked tablecloths, chillies hung on the wall, flasks on the table — the old-school Trastevere trattoria done without irony, and it holds 8.8 on TheFork and 4.7 on Restaurant Guru rather than coasting on the look. Roman classics: cacio e pepe, saltimbocca, carciofi in season. Open until midnight on Saturdays (weekend service runs from 11:00), so a late table is easy — call ahead anyway on +39 06 5896848. About €40 with wine.

08:30
Colosseumbook ahead
sight · 120 min · €18 · Colosseo, Piazza del Colosseobook ahead
Colosseo, Piazza del Colosseo
€18 for adults 25 and over, €2 for EU citizens 18–24, free under 18 — and the ticket automatically covers the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so today's only other entry fee is dinner. THE BOOKING RULE THAT MATTERS: tickets go on sale at ticketing.colosseo.it at 09:00 Rome time exactly 30 days before the visit date, and weekend dates sell out within hours of release. Set an alarm for the 30-day mark; there is no reliable fallback. The €24 Full Experience and €22 arena/underground add-ons are worth it only if you care about standing on the arena floor — the standard ticket already puts you on both tiers. Take the earliest slot: by 11:00 the upper walkway is shoulder to shoulder and there is no shade anywhere in it.

10:45
Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
sight · 150 min · free · Foro Romano, Via della Salara Vecchia
Foro Romano, Via della Salara Vecchia
Same ticket, no second payment, and the reason the Colosseum stop is only two hours. Enter from the Via Sacra gate and climb to the Palatine early — the hill has the shade, the umbrella pines and the view back down over the whole Forum, and most people do it in the opposite order and arrive exhausted. Summer here is brutal and almost entirely unshaded: carry water, and note the free public fountains (nasoni) inside the site. If it is over 35°C, cut this to 90 minutes and take the extra hour at lunch instead — the stones will still be there.
13:30
La Taverna dei Monti
food · 100 min · €28
La Taverna dei Monti, Via del Boschetto 41, Monti
Twelve minutes uphill into Monti, the neighbourhood wedged between the Forum and Termini that stayed residential. Roman staples done properly — carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe, saltimbocca — at 4.3 on Tripadvisor and ranked around #615 of Rome's 11,800 restaurants. Open Tue–Sun 12:30–23:00, CLOSED MONDAYS, which is why it fits a Sunday and why a Monday-inclusive break needs a different plan. About €28. Note for anyone tempted by the better-known Trattoria Monti nearby: it closes Sunday and Monday both, and needs booking weeks out.

15:30
Vittoriano and the Campidoglio terraces
sight · 90 min · free · Altare della Patria (Vittoriano), Piazza Venezia
Altare della Patria (Vittoriano), Piazza Venezia
Walk down Via dei Serpenti to Piazza Venezia. Climbing the Vittoriano's lower terraces is free and gets you most of the height; the glass panoramic lift to the Terrazza delle Quadrighe is €18, which also bundles Palazzo Venezia and the Risorgimento museum but is a lot for a view when you are about to get a better one for nothing. Declined here in favour of the Campidoglio: take the Cordonata ramp up beside the monument to Michelangelo's piazza, then the passage to the right of Palazzo Senatorio, which opens onto a free terrace looking straight down the length of the Forum you spent the morning inside. That is the picture. (The lift is free on the first Sunday of the month if your dates happen to land there.)
17:30
Pantheonbook ahead
sight · 60 min · €7book ahead
Pantheon, Piazza della Rotonda
PRICE CHANGED THIS MONTH: entry rose from €5 to €7 on 1 July 2026, so any guide quoting €5 is out of date — reduced €2 for EU citizens 18–24. Still the best-value ticket in the city for the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built, unaltered since about AD 126, with the oculus open to the sky. Late afternoon is the moment: the sun disc thrown by the oculus has tracked down the coffered dome onto the wall and the light goes amber. Book a slot online to skip the piazza queue. It is a working church — same shoulders-and-knees rule as this morning.

18:45
Piazza Navona
sight · 45 min · free
Piazza Navona, Rome
Five minutes west, and worth timing for after dark rather than in daylight: the floodlights on Bernini's Four Rivers fountain do something the afternoon sun cannot, and the day-trip coaches have gone. The oval shape is the footprint of Domitian's stadium, which is why it is a racetrack rather than a square. Free. Eat nowhere on this piazza — the terraces here are the most reliably poor value in central Rome, which is why dinner is five minutes further on.
19:45
Hosteria Grappolo d'Orobook ahead
food · 105 min · €38book ahead
Hosteria Grappolo d'Oro, Piazza della Cancelleria 80
A Bib Gourmand in the 2026 Michelin Guide, tucked on a quiet piazza a few steps off Campo de' Fiori — carbonara and amatriciana that justify the fuss, a serious natural-wine list, and 4.3 on Tripadvisor. Sunday service 12:45–15:30 and 18:30–23:00, so the last night of a Saturday–Sunday weekend is covered. Reserve: it is small and the Bib has been noticed. About €38. If you are flying out Monday morning, this is a fifteen-minute walk or a short bus from Termini's connections.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the restaurant's own site now gives 12:30–15:00 and 18:30–22:30 seven days, Wednesday lunch excepted; the stop says Sunday 12:45–15:30 and 18:30–23:00, so it overstates both closing times by half an hour. — checked 2026-08-15

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
