Five days on one road: two in Kigali, two and a half at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes, and one permit that has to be bought months before anything else. Everything here is inside Rwanda and priced in Rwandan francs, so there is no border and no second currency to reconcile. The number that decides whether this trip happens is the gorilla permit: USD 1,500 for a foreign non-resident, checked on 3 August 2026, which is roughly RWF 2,205,000 and about four fifths of the total below. It is not a ticket you buy on the day. Volcanoes National Park releases eight permits per habituated gorilla family per day and no more, which is a national ceiling of somewhere around 96 to 112 trekkers depending on how many families are open to visitors that season, and June to September sells out first. Book three to six months ahead through the Rwanda Development Board on the Irembo portal, or through a licensed operator, with your passport details, for one named date. Golden monkey trekking is a completely separate permit at USD 100 and is bought the same way, which is why day 4 exists as its own line rather than as an add-on. Two more rules that catch people. The briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi is at 07:00 sharp and there is no public transport to Kinigi at that hour, so you sleep in Musanze or Kinigi and arrange a vehicle the night before; a missed briefing is a forfeited USD 1,500 with no refund. And the last Saturday of every month is Umuganda, three hours of compulsory national community work from 08:00 to 11:00 when businesses shut and traffic stops across the whole country - the Kigali Genocide Memorial opens at 13:00 that day instead of 09:00. Do not put a city day or the intercity transfer on it. Come in the long dry season from June to September or the short one from December to February; the long rains from March to May are the wettest months on a mountain that is wet anyway. Minimum age is 15 for gorillas and 12 for golden monkeys, and both are enforced at the desk.

Arrive Kigali International Airport, taxi into the city
travel · 90 min · RWF 15,000
About RWF 15,000 for the 12 km run into town, 25 to 35 minutes, agreed before you get in. Four things to sort before or at the airport. The visa: a tourist visa is USD 50 single entry or USD 70 multiple, available online in advance or on arrival, and a large number of African, Commonwealth and Francophonie nationals get 30 days free on arrival, so check your own passport rather than assuming - it is nationality-dependent and therefore not in the budget below. Yellow fever certificates are asked for on some routings. The plastic: Rwanda banned polythene bags in 2008 and enforces it at the door, so plastic bags in your luggage are taken off you at the airport and replaced with a paper one you pay a couple of dollars for. Repack your toiletries in fabric or ziplock-free pouches before you fly and this is a non-event. The money: draw Rwandan francs at an airport or town ATM. Kigali is unusually card-friendly for the region and mobile money is everywhere, but Musanze, the park gate and every porter and market stall are cash, and the park's own fees are quoted in US dollars even though you are living in francs. The date: if today is the last Saturday of the month you have landed on Umuganda and the country is closed until 11:00, which is the one calendar rule this trip has. Stay in Kiyovu, Kacyiru or Kimihurura - they are ten minutes from everything on this itinerary and from each other.

Two nights in Kigali, two in Musanze, and back to Kigali for the flight on day 5 without a fifth night - that is the rhythm, and it is why nothing here asks you to move hotels more than once. Kigali is built on ridges with valleys between them, so distances that look short on a map are a climb; moto-taxis are the local answer and are metered through the Yego app, helmets provided, and cost a few hundred francs across town. Leave your bag at the Kigali hotel for the Musanze nights if they will hold it - you need a daypack, boots, waterproofs and warm layers up north, not a suitcase.

Question Coffee Bar, KG 5 Ave, Kacyiru, Kigali
Rated about 4.6 on Tripadvisor and ranked around 19th of 258 restaurants in Kigali, around RWF 8,000 to 15,000 for coffee and a plate. It is the retail end of a cooperative of some 40,000 Rwandan women coffee farmers, and the baristas will pour you a cupping flight of single-origin lots from Huye, Rulindo and Nyamasheke side by side if you ask, which is the fastest way to understand why Rwanda's specialty coffee sells the way it does. Food is breakfast plates, sandwiches and salads rather than a full lunch. Cards accepted, which will not be true of most of the next four days. Go now rather than later, because it closes in the evening and the rest of today is heavy.

Entry is free and the guide is not. The Ubumuntu package is USD 30 for international visitors and USD 20 for East African citizens, or USD 20 and USD 10 for the version without the lapel pin, and it includes the audio guide, a rose to lay at the burial site and a cafe voucher. An audio guide on its own is reported by visitors at anywhere between USD 15 and USD 25 depending on what you decline, so treat that as a range you negotiate at the desk rather than a posted price; the figure below is the full package. Take one of them - the exhibition is not signposted for a visitor who arrives knowing only the outline. Open 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00, seven days a week, with three exceptions that matter: on the last Saturday of each month it opens at 13:00 because of Umuganda, it is closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and it is closed to the public on the morning of 7 April, the start of Kwibuka, the national commemoration. Allow at least an hour and a half; this itinerary gives it two and a half because the gardens outside are half the visit. Children under 12 are not admitted. No photography inside the museum, and do not walk on the mass graves - more than 250,000 people are buried in the terraces below you, which is the fact the building is organised around. The permanent exhibition covers the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, and an upper floor sets it beside Namibia, Armenia, the Shoah, Cambodia and Srebrenica. There is a children's room. It is the hardest ninety minutes of this trip and it belongs on day 1, not day 5, because everything you see afterwards - a market, a coffee cooperative, a national park that funds its neighbours - is a country that decided what to do next. Guided tours with staff run once daily at 09:30 in mixed groups and want a week's notice, which is why this stop uses the audio guide instead.

Rated about 4.5 on Tripadvisor and ranked around 16th of 258 restaurants in Kigali, around RWF 25,000 to 40,000 for two courses. Belgian-trained kitchen doing a short European card with Rwandan produce - lake fish, tilapia, steaks, a proper dessert list - in a small dining room in Kiyovu. Book, because it is small. The reason it is here rather than something loud is the afternoon you have just had: this is the evening to eat quietly and go to bed, not to go looking for a night out. If you would rather have Rwandan food tonight, that meal is waiting on day 5 and is better placed there.

USD 15 a person for the two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, with a Rwandan lunch cooked by the cooperative for about USD 3 more if you want it. Book ahead by email or through the centre's site; tours run most mornings and are led by members of the Umutima cooperative, who are the women the centre exists for rather than guides hired in. Nyamirambo is the oldest and densest quarter of Kigali, largely Muslim, and the only part of the city that predates the grid and the glass. The walk goes through a hair salon still running 1980s dome dryers, a tailor who cuts without patterns, a cassava processor, a children's library and the neighbourhood market, with a short Kinyarwanda lesson at the start so you can greet people rather than photograph them. It is a non-profit: the guides are paid a fair wage, the households visited get a cut, and the rest funds the centre's literacy and sewing programmes. This is the counterweight to yesterday afternoon and the reason both are on this itinerary - one is the state's account and this is the street's.

Rated about 4.5 on Tripadvisor and ranked around 9th of 258 restaurants in Kigali, around RWF 15,000 to 22,000 for a thali or a curry and rice. North Indian, in a garden in Kiyovu, and it has been the city's benchmark for long enough that it now has a second branch in Nyarutarama - this stop means the Kiyovu one. Kigali's Indian and Pakistani community is old and the food here is not a tourist approximation. Eat properly now: the next real meal is 150 km and three hours away, the bus does not stop for lunch, and Musanze eats early.

travel · 165 min · RWF 3,500
RWF 3,000 to 3,500 and a little over two hours for roughly 110 km, plus the moto or taxi out to the terminal and to your hotel at the far end. Virunga Express and Volcano Express both run the Kigali to Musanze road from Nyabugogo bus terminal in north-west Kigali, roughly every half hour through the day; you buy at the counter on the day and there is no advantage to booking ahead. Sit on the right for the volcanoes. The road is tarred the whole way, well maintained, and climbs steadily through terraced hills into the Northern Province - the town is at about 1,850 m and it is noticeably colder than Kigali, which is the first hint of what tomorrow is like. The alternative is a private transfer, USD 80 to USD 150 one way for a car and driver, which is worth it only if you are three or four people, are carrying a lot of gear, or want to stop on the way. There is no train in Rwanda and no scheduled flight on this route. Two warnings. Do not travel this road on the last Saturday of the month before 11:00 - Umuganda halts traffic nationally. And do not schedule this transfer on the morning of your gorilla trek: the briefing is at 07:00 in Kinigi and a bus from Kigali cannot get you there.

Musanze (Ruhengeri), Northern Province, Rwanda
Two nights here, and this is the single most important booking after the permit. Musanze town has the restaurants, the ATMs and the cheap rooms and sits 13 km from the park headquarters at Kinigi; Kinigi itself has the lodges, is five minutes from the gate, and has almost nothing else. Either works, but tonight you must settle tomorrow's transport with whoever you are staying with: there is no public transport from Musanze to Kinigi at 05:45 and the last stretch is rough enough that a 4x4 earns its money. Expect around RWF 45,000 for a return run from Musanze, less from Kinigi, and confirm it in writing rather than in conversation. Ask for a packed breakfast at 05:15 too, because nothing is open. Lay everything out tonight: boots, gaiters, long trousers, long sleeves, rain shell, a warm layer, gardening gloves for the nettles, two litres of water, snacks, cash for the porter, passport, and the permit confirmation. The gorillas are found at 2,400 m and higher, mornings near Kinigi run 11 to 14 degrees, and it rains on the mountain in every month of the year.

Volcana Lounge, Musanze (Ruhengeri), Northern Province
Rated about 4.2 on Tripadvisor across some 102 reviews and ranked around 2nd of 12 restaurants in Ruhengeri, which makes it the best-evidenced kitchen in this town by both score and review count, around RWF 12,000 to 22,000. Wood-fired pizzas, spinach lasagne, brochettes and cold beer in a garden, and it is where everyone who works around this park ends up - guides, trackers, researchers, drivers. Sit outside if the evening is clear and you can see what you are climbing tomorrow. Eat by 20:00 and go to bed, because you are getting up at 05:00. Cash. If your lodge is out at Kinigi rather than in town, do not drive in for this - eat where you are sleeping tonight and save the town for later in the week.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
