Five days built around the two things Sydney does better than anywhere: the harbour and the coast. Day 1 walks the Rocks, goes up inside the Harbour Bridge's south-east pylon — reopened in May 2026 as the BridgeMuseum — crosses the bridge on foot and tours the Opera House. Day 2 is Bondi and the six-kilometre clifftop walk to Coogee. Day 3 spends the whole day on ferries: Taronga Zoo in the morning, Manly and Shelly Beach in the afternoon, and the run back past a lit Opera House at night. Day 4 takes the train to Katoomba for Scenic World and the Three Sisters. Day 5 comes back to town for the new Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay, opened in January 2026, and finishes at a free world-class art gallery. Budget about A$600 per person for five days of admissions, transport and eating, lodging aside — Sydney is expensive to sleep in and surprisingly cheap to visit, because the beaches, the coast walk, the Botanic Garden, the bridge crossing, Echo Point and the Art Gallery of NSW are all free. Only four stops cost real money: Scenic World (A$64), Taronga (A$51), the Opera House tour (A$50) and the BridgeMuseum (A$40). Tap on with any contactless card or an Opal card — the adult daily fare cap makes the Blue Mountains day and the ferry day nearly free after the first couple of trips.

Day 1 — Circular Quay: the Rocks, the bridge, the Opera House, the Botanic GardenCircular Quay: the Rocks, the bridge, the Opera House, the Botanic Garden

09:00
The Rocks
sight · 75 min · free
The Rocks, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
Free. The sandstone lanes where the colony started in 1788, wedged between the bridge and Circular Quay — cut-through alleys like Nurses Walk and Suez Canal, the 1816 Cadmans Cottage, and pubs claiming to be the oldest in Australia (the Fortune of War and the Lord Nelson both make a case). THE ROCKS MARKETS run Friday to Sunday, roughly 10:00–17:00, filling George Street and Playfair Street with craft, food and vintage stalls; if your day 1 is a weekday you get the lanes quieter and emptier instead, which is not a bad trade. Start here at 09:00 before the cruise-ship crowds land. Circular Quay station and the ferry wharves are five minutes away.
10:30
Sydney Harbour BridgeMuseum
sight · 90 min · A$40
Sydney Harbour BridgeMuseum, south-east pylon, Cumberland Street, The Rocks, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
About A$39.95 adult, open daily 09:00–18:30 — and NEW: this is the old Pylon Lookout, closed for a refit and reopened on 27 May 2026 as the BridgeMuseum, with three floors of exhibition including an immersive media room and the same panoramic deck at the top. Old guides, old signage and old map pins all still say 'Pylon Lookout'; same building, same climb, new inside, new name and a higher price than the pre-closure one. About 200 steps and no lift, with benches on the way up. 4.6 on Tripadvisor across 1,829 reviews and #14 of 1,002 Sydney attractions. It is roughly a NINTH of the price of the BridgeClimb, which runs about A$364–374 for the Summit Day climb, and the view from the pylon deck is very nearly the same one — the difference is that on the climb you are out on the arch itself. If the view is the point, go up the pylon; if the arch is the point, book BridgeClimb separately and well ahead. Two small gripes recur in reviews: an inaudible video presentation and some exhibit lighting out. Entry is from the bridge's pedestrian walkway, not from street level.

Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge
sight · 60 min · free · Sydney Harbour Bridge pedestrian walkway (eastern footway), Sydney NSW, Australia
Sydney Harbour Bridge pedestrian walkway (eastern footway), Sydney NSW, Australia
Free, open 24 hours, and the best free thing in the city. The EASTERN footway is the pedestrian side — the western side is the cycleway, and the two are not interchangeable. It is 1.15 km deck to deck, about 20–25 minutes at a walk, with the Opera House framed under the arch the whole way across. Access from the Rocks is via the Cumberland Street stairs by the Argyle Street underpass, right by the pylon entrance, so this follows straight on from the museum. Walk to Milsons Point on the north side for the classic Luna Park-and-bridge photo, then come back on foot or take the train one stop from Milsons Point to Wynyard. It is windy and loud with traffic; hold onto hats.
13:30
Fish at The Rocks
food · 75 min · A$65
Fish at The Rocks, 29 Kent Street, Millers Point, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
A neighbourhood seafood restaurant on the quiet side of the Rocks that consistently outranks the harbourfront tourist places it sits behind — 4.5 on Tripadvisor and #13 of 4,688 Sydney restaurants. Whole fish, oysters, chowder, and a menu that changes with the market. Expect A$55–75 a head at lunch with a glass of wine; dinner runs higher. Booking is sensible for a weekend table. It is a five-minute walk uphill from the bridge steps and a world away from the George Street queue — which is the point of putting it here rather than a pub on the quay.

Sydney Opera House Tourbook ahead
sight · 60 min · A$50 · Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point, Sydney NSW 2000, Australiabook ahead
Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
A$50 adult booked ahead, A$55 on the day — book ahead, tours sell out and arriving more than five minutes late forfeits the ticket with no refund. One hour with a guide through the foyers and into performance venues (which ones depends on what is rehearsing that day), covering Utzon's design, the fourteen-year build and the fight that followed. KNOW BEFORE YOU BOOK: the standard tour covers up to 2.5 km on foot and around 300 stairs with NO lift access and no chance to sit down. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or walkers — the Opera House runs a separate Mobility Access Tour for that. Arrive 15 minutes early at the Welcome Centre for bag checks. The forecourt, steps and the tiled shells outside cost nothing and are open all hours, so skipping the tour and just walking around the building is a legitimate choice.

Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and Mrs Macquaries Chair
sight · 120 min · free · Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Mrs Macquaries Road, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Mrs Macquaries Road, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
Free, open from 07:00 daily with closing times shifting seasonally (roughly 17:00 in midwinter to 20:00 in midsummer). Thirty hectares wrapping the harbour east of the Opera House, running from the 1816 planting through the succulent garden and the Palm Grove to the Calyx glasshouse. Walk the seawall path — it is flat, shaded and puts the Opera House and the bridge in one frame the whole way. At the far end, about 25 minutes on, MRS MACQUARIES CHAIR is a bench cut into the sandstone in 1810 for the governor's wife and the single most photographed viewpoint in Sydney, because it is the one place you see the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge lined up together. Go at sunset if the season allows. Free guided walks leave the Garden Shop daily at 10:30.
18:45
Opera Bar
food · 90 min · A$60
Opera Bar, Lower Concourse, Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
The obvious first-night drink, and worth doing once: an outdoor bar on the lower concourse directly beneath the Opera House shells, looking across the water at the lit bridge. 4.2 on Tripadvisor across 2,131 reviews, #95 of 4,748 Sydney restaurants. BUY THE VIEW, NOT THE MENU — the recurring complaint in reviews is exactly that, that the food is ordinary pub food at harbourfront prices while the setting is unbeatable. Order a drink and a snack plate, expect A$50–70 a head if you eat properly, and go elsewhere if you want a serious dinner. No bookings for most of the terrace: it is first come, and the water-edge tables go by 17:00 on a warm evening, so come earlier and stay if you want one. Live music most nights from around 17:30.

08:45
Bus 333 from Circular Quay to Bondi Beach
travel · 45 min · A$4
The 333 is the express — about 35–40 minutes from Circular Quay via Oxford Street and Bondi Junction, roughly A$4.20 on Opal or any contactless card. Tap on AND off; forgetting to tap off charges the maximum fare. Buses in Sydney do not take cash at all. Sit upstairs at the front if you get a double-decker. The 380 covers the same route more slowly with more stops.

Bondi Icebergs Pool and Bondi Beach
sight · 135 min · A$10 · Bondi Icebergs Club, 1 Notts Avenue, Bondi Beach NSW 2026, Australia
Bondi Icebergs Club, 1 Notts Avenue, Bondi Beach NSW 2026, Australia
A$10 adult for the pool (children about A$7, family A$30), and the beach itself is free. The Icebergs is the red-and-white 50 m ocean pool at the southern end of Bondi that everyone has seen a photograph of — built 1929 for winter swimmers, with waves breaking over the lane ropes at high tide. CLOSED THURSDAYS for cleaning, and it also shuts in big swell, so check the club's site the morning of. Swim or just pay to walk down and photograph it. Then walk the beach north: the Bondi Pavilion, the skate bowl, the surf schools. Bondi faces east, so mornings are the good light and the calm water; by afternoon the southerly usually gets up. Free showers and lockers at the pavilion.

12:00
Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
sight · 180 min · free
Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk (northern trailhead, Notts Avenue, Bondi Beach NSW 2026, Australia)
Free, and the reason to give Sydney a whole beach day: 6 km of clifftop path south from the Icebergs, through Tamarama, Bronte, the Waverley Cemetery on its headland, Clovelly and Gordons Bay to Coogee. Two hours at a steady pace, three if you stop, and you will stop — there are five beaches and a dozen lookouts on the way, plus Bronte's ocean pool and Clovelly's concrete-sided swimming channel if you carry your swimmers. It is well signposted, paved almost throughout, and busy enough that you never feel remote, but it has stairs and headland climbs and almost NO SHADE — take water, a hat and sunscreen, and do not start it at 14:00 in January. If 6 km is too much, Bondi to Bronte is 2.5 km and has its own bus back. In late October and early November the whole path becomes the free Sculpture by the Sea exhibition, which is spectacular and very crowded.
15:15
Coogee Pavilion
food · 105 min · A$55
Coogee Pavilion, 169 Dolphin Street, Coogee NSW 2034, Australia
A big three-level beach hotel at the end of the walk: ground-floor dining room with wood-fired pizza, oysters and sashimi, a games floor with ping-pong and bocce, and a rooftop bar with the beach view. A$45–70 a head. SET EXPECTATIONS: it rates 3.8 on Tripadvisor, #8 of 91 Coogee restaurants, and the reviews split by floor — the ground floor is consistently the better-rated end and the rooftop the weaker one, so if you only want the view, go up for a drink and eat downstairs. It is loud, family-heavy on weekends and does not take bookings for the ground floor. Arriving at 15:15, between lunch and dinner, is the one time you walk straight in. Alternatives two minutes away on the same strip if it is heaving: the Coogee Bay Hotel or the cafés on Arden Street.
NOTE · field note · open at 169 Dolphin Street from 07:30, but still only 3.8 — in the warning band a second quarter running, with service and coffee the recurring complaints. — checked 2026-08-15

Bus 373 or 372 back to the city
travel · 50 min · A$5
The 373 runs Coogee to Circular Quay via Randwick and Oxford Street in about 45 minutes for roughly A$4.20; the 372 goes to Central. Both leave from Arden Street by the beach. If you have already tapped a few times today you may be at or near the adult daily cap — about A$19.30 Monday to Thursday and A$9.65 on Fridays, weekends and public holidays — after which further travel that day is free. Caps are reviewed annually, usually in July, so check transportnsw.info for the current figure. You will be back in town around 18:00 with legs that have done 6 km of clifftop; a light dinner near your hotel is the honest recommendation rather than another outing.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
