A weekend built on one decision: Piazza San Marco gets a single contained morning block on day 2 — the Basilica at opening, then the Palazzo Ducale, and nothing in the Piazza after lunch — while everything else happens in San Polo, Cannaregio and Dorsoduro, where Venetians still buy fish and drink standing up. Day 1 never crosses the Piazza at all, and day 2 leaves it by 13:15 and does not come back. Three practicalities that decide the trip, all checked in July 2026. (1) The contributo di accesso — the day-tripper access fee — is €5 if you register at least four days out and €10 inside three days, charged 08:30–16:00 on the red days in the official calendar (60 of them in 2026, spread between 3 April and 26 July); it applies to the historic centre only, not Murano, Burano, Torcello or the Lido. If you sleep in the comune you are exempt, but you still have to register on cda.ve.it for a free QR code. (2) A 24-hour vaporetto pass is €25 and a 48-hour €35, against €9.50 for a single 75-minute ticket — for a walking weekend like this one a pass rarely pays for itself, so this itinerary budgets one single ticket for the Grand Canal ride and assumes you walk the rest. (3) Neither day works on a Sunday, and day 2 is the one that breaks hardest. On Sundays St Mark's Basilica admits visitors to the church only from 14:00 — the 09:30 opening this whole day is hung on does not exist — so day 2 must be a weekday or a Saturday. Day 1 fails on a Sunday too, more quietly: the Rialto fish market is shut, the Frari does not open until 13:00, and All'Arco is closed. Day 2 also cannot be a Monday, because the Gallerie dell'Accademia close. Run it Friday–Saturday and every one of those constraints falls away at once; that is the weekend this itinerary is written for.

Field checks & ratings
Every venue in this itinerary was checked against current public sources — opening hours, prices, closures — before it was published. Stops that aren't venues — transit legs, walks between them — aren't in the count.
Checked against tripadvisor.com · basilicadeifrari.it · basilicasalutevenezia.it · basilicasanmarco.it · gallerieaccademia.it · live.comune.venezia.it + 10 more
How we check
Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
