Three days in three tight clusters: the Habsburg core of the Innere Stadt entirely on foot, then the Ringstrasse museums down to Karlsplatz ending in standing room at the State Opera, then the Belvedere's Klimt room and Schönbrunn taken in one westward run. The opera evening is the centrepiece and the cheapest thing in the itinerary: Stehplatz standing tickets are €13–18, released online at 10:00 on the day of the performance and also sold at the dedicated Operngasse desk from 80 minutes before curtain — the same house, the same orchestra, a numbered spot at a padded railing with your own subtitle screen, for a tenth of a seat. Two scheduling rules are load-bearing. Run this Tuesday to Saturday. Vienna genuinely closes on Sunday: shops are shut by law, the Naschmarkt's stalls with them, and two of the three dinners here don't open — while the Kunsthistorisches and the Secession both close Mondays. And the Staatsoper is dark from 1 July to 3 September 2026, so a summer trip swaps the opera evening for the free opera films on Rathausplatz or a daytime tour of the house. Book Schönbrunn online before you fly: the Classic Pass is €36 online against €49 at the gate, the single biggest saving available here.

09:00
St. Stephen's Cathedral South Tower
sight · 75 min · €8 · Stephansdom, Stephansplatz 3, Vienna
Stephansdom, Stephansplatz 3, Vienna
€8 for the South Tower, and bring cash — the cathedral currently sells all its tickets by cash only, which catches out most visitors. 343 steps up a spiral staircase to the watchman's room, open daily 09:00–19:00 with last entry 18:15; there is no lift on this tower, so if stairs are out, the North Tower lift to the Pummerin bell is the same €8. The nave itself is free to enter and open from 06:00, but the paid self-guided visit that gets you past the barrier (also €8) runs only Mon–Sat 09:00–11:30 and 13:00–16:30, Sundays 13:00–16:30. If you intend to do towers plus catacombs plus the Dom Museum, the €29 All-Inclusive ticket beats buying four separate €8 entries. Come at opening: this is the middle of Vienna's busiest square by 10:30.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: independent 2026 German-language listings put the South Tower at €6.00–6.50 and the North Tower lift at €7.00, against the flat €8 the stop quotes for both and carries in est_cost — the stop over-budgets rather t… — checked 2026-08-15

Graben, Kohlmarkt and Michaelerplatz
sight · 45 min · free · Graben, Vienna
Graben, Vienna
Free, and the walk that stitches the whole day together — about 600 m from the cathedral to the Hofburg's gate. On the Graben, the Pestsäule of 1693 is Leopold I's thank-you for the plague ending. Kohlmarkt is the luxury street and the approach shot: the Michaelertor dome of the Hofburg closes the view at the end of it. At Michaelerplatz, the excavated Roman and medieval layers sit open in the middle of the square, and directly opposite the palace is Adolf Loos's 1911 Looshaus — the deliberately undecorated façade that reportedly so offended Franz Joseph he stopped using this entrance. Standing between the two is the fastest way to understand what 1900 Vienna was arguing about.
11:20
Demel
food · 45 min · €14
Demel, Kohlmarkt 14, Vienna
Open daily 10:00–19:00, on Kohlmarkt so it needs no detour. The former imperial court confectioner, and Vienna's best-ranked of the grand old houses at Tripadvisor 3.9 and around #194 of 4,500 restaurants — modest-looking numbers that are normal for this category and worth reading correctly (see the itinerary notes on coffee-house ratings). Coffee and a slice runs €12–16. Two things to do: watch the bakers through the glass wall into the kitchen, and order the Sachertorte here so you can take the other side of Vienna's most famous lawsuit — Demel and Hotel Sacher fought in court for years over whose recipe is the Original. Café Central, the other obvious choice on this stretch, has been closed for a full renovation since 16 March 2026 and is not due to reopen until autumn 2026 — do not join a queue you may see outside; its stand-in is DECENTRAL on Freyung.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: now opens at 08:00, two hours earlier than the 10:00 in the stop — which makes an earlier coffee stop possible if the day is rearranged. — checked 2026-08-15

sight · 135 min · €20 · Sisi Museum, Hofburg, Michaelerkuppel, Viennabook ahead
Sisi Museum, Hofburg, Michaelerkuppel, Vienna
€20 adult, audio guide included, open daily 09:00–17:30 with last admission 16:30. One ticket, one route: the Sisi Museum first, then the twenty-odd rooms Franz Joseph and Elisabeth actually lived in — his campaign bed and cold-water washstand, her gymnastic rings and the hair-care regime that took three hours a day. The museum is honest about the myth rather than selling it, which makes it much better than the gift shops suggest. The Silver Collection on the same route has been closed since 1 April 2023 and remains closed, so ignore older descriptions promising three sights in one. Book a slot online at imperialtickets.com; the Michaelerkuppel entrance queue is the one that builds. If Sisi is the whole point of your trip, the €60 Sisi Pass adds Schönbrunn and the Furniture Museum — but this itinerary buys Schönbrunn's own Classic Pass on day 3 instead, which is better value for what it includes.

Trzesniewski
food · 40 min · €10 · Buffet Trzesniewski, Dorotheergasse 1, Vienna
Buffet Trzesniewski, Dorotheergasse 1, Vienna
Open Mon–Fri 08:30–19:30, Sat 09:00–18:00, Sun 10:00–17:00, three minutes from the Hofburg. Vienna's most useful cheap lunch and an institution since 1902: about twenty open-faced spreads on dark bread — egg and onion, herring, paprika-cream, bacon — at roughly €1.40 a piece, eaten standing at a narrow counter with a Pfiff, the 0.125 l mini beer that exists mainly for this shop. Four or five plus a drink is under €10. Point at what you want; the queue moves fast and nobody expects you to pronounce the name. Kafka is claimed as a regular, which every Viennese buffet claims, but this one has the paperwork.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: the rolls are €1.80 apiece on the company's own branch page, not the "roughly €1.40" the stop states — five plus a drink is now about €11, so the stop's "under €10" no longer holds at five. — checked 2026-08-15

Kaisergruft (Imperial Crypt)
sight · 60 min · €15 · Kaisergruft, Tegetthoffstraße 2, Vienna
Kaisergruft, Tegetthoffstraße 2, Vienna
€15 adult, open daily 10:00–18:00 with last entry 17:30; the English guided tour runs at 15:00 daily if you want the history spoken. Under the Capuchin church on Neuer Markt, 149 Habsburgs in a plain vaulted basement — twelve emperors and nineteen empresses. Come in the afternoon of the same day you saw their bedrooms and the effect is the point of visiting: Maria Theresia's enormous double sarcophagus with Franz Stephan, Joseph II's deliberately austere copper box beside it as a rebuke to his mother's taste, and Elisabeth's tomb still covered in fresh flowers left by strangers. Quiet, unlit by drama, and the single most sobering hour in central Vienna. Not for the claustrophobic; allow that it is genuinely a crypt.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: €15 and the daily 10:00–18:00 hours are confirmed, but there is now a 20% SURCHARGE on Sundays and public holidays — €18 rather than €15 — which the stop and est_cost do not carry. — checked 2026-08-15

Gasthaus Pöschl, Weihburggasse 17, Vienna
Google 4.4 across 2,600+ reviews, Tripadvisor 4.2 and around #113 of 4,478 — a small wood-panelled Beisl five minutes from Stephansplatz that somehow never became a tourist stop. Open Mon–Sat 12:00–23:00 with the kitchen to 22:00; closed Sundays. Classic Viennese cooking done properly: Wiener Schnitzel from veal, Tafelspitz, Blunzengröstl, Zwiebelrostbraten, mains roughly €20–30. It has maybe fifteen tables, so reserve — walk-ins at 19:00 are usually turned away. If you would rather do the famous schnitzel-hall thing instead, Figlmüller's Wollzeile branch is four minutes away, but expect a queue and a plate the size of a hubcap.

Kunsthistorisches Museum, Maria-Theresien-Platz, Vienna
€22 online against €24 at the desk, so book on your phone at breakfast. Open Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00, Thursdays to 21:00, last admission 30 minutes before close; closed Mondays except in June, July and August, which is one half of why this itinerary avoids both Monday and Sunday. Under-19s are free. Two hours is honest for the highlights and there are more: the Bruegel room is the largest gathering of his paintings anywhere and holds the Tower of Babel and Hunters in the Snow, plus Vermeer's Art of Painting, Velázquez's Habsburg portraits, and Raphael's Madonna of the Meadow. Do not skip the Kunstkammer downstairs — the Habsburg cabinet of curiosities, where the Saliera by Cellini is a gold salt cellar worth more than most museums' whole holdings. The café under the cupola is a legitimate stop in its own right.

Umar Fisch am Naschmarkt
food · 75 min · €35 · Umar Fisch, Naschmarkt 76-79, Vienna
Umar Fisch, Naschmarkt 76-79, Vienna
Tripadvisor 4.0 and around #562 of 4,453 — the original Umar at stalls 76–79, widely called the best fish in Vienna and a fishmonger since the mid-1990s with the restaurant added in 2003. Get the address right: there are three Umar outlets and the others rate far worse, including one at Naschmarkt 1 and a bar in the Innere Stadt. Grilled fish by the day's catch, plates roughly €25–45 — and be clear-eyed about the bill, because review aggregators put this at €30–80 a head and that is what it becomes the moment oysters, a whole grilled fish or a second glass of wine are involved. It is the most expensive lunch in this itinerary and the only stop where the Naschmarkt's general pricing warning applies to a place worth paying it. Walk the length of the Naschmarkt first — stalls run Mon–Fri 06:00–21:00 and Sat 06:00–18:00, the stalls are closed Sundays (only the sit-down places open, 10:00–21:00). Be alert at the deli and cheese stands at the Karlsplatz end: prices vary wildly between neighbours and the tasting-plate hustle is aimed squarely at tourists. The produce end nearer Kettenbrückengasse is where locals actually shop.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: a seasonal Sunday closure in winter that the stop does not mention while scheduling a 13:00 Sunday-capable lunch. — checked 2026-08-15

Secession — Klimt's Beethoven Frieze
sight · 60 min · €16 · Wiener Secession, Friedrichstraße 12, Vienna
Wiener Secession, Friedrichstraße 12, Vienna
€13 plus €3 for the audio guide, which is worth it here because the frieze is a narrative you cannot read cold. Open Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays. Free on the first Wednesday of every month — 5 August, 2 September, 7 October, 4 November and 2 December 2026 among them — which is a real €13 if your dates allow. The building itself is the manifesto: 1898, a gilded dome of laurel leaves the city nicknamed the golden cabbage, and 'To every age its art, to art its freedom' cut over the door. Downstairs, Klimt's 1902 Beethoven Frieze runs around three walls of a purpose-built basement room, painted as a temporary decoration and never removed. Know what you are buying before you queue: €13, or €16 with the audio guide, gets you that one basement room plus whatever contemporary exhibition happens to be installed upstairs — and the most common complaint in reviews is exactly that, people expecting a museum and finding a single frieze and a white gallery. Judged as twenty minutes with one extraordinary object it is worth it and it reframes everything else you see in Vienna; judged by floor area it is not. If your dates land on a first Wednesday, the same visit is free.

Karlskirche
sight · 45 min · €10
Karlskirche, Kreuzherrengasse 1, Karlsplatz, Vienna
€9.50 adult, audio guide included, and the ticket also covers the panorama terrace above the entrance portal, the organ loft, the treasury and the church model. Open Mon–Sat 09:00–18:00, Sundays and holidays 11:45–19:15 — the late Sunday start is because this is a working parish church, not a museum. Fischer von Erlach's 1737 masterpiece, built as another plague votive, with two Trajan's-Column-style pillars that look borrowed from Rome and Rottmayr's vast cupola fresco overhead. From the terrace you get Karlsplatz, the pond with the Henry Moore, and the Otto Wagner Stadtbahn pavilions in one frame. Concerts — usually Vivaldi and Mozart — run most evenings and are ticketed separately.

Café Sperl
food · 75 min · €14
Café Sperl, Gumpendorfer Straße 11, Vienna
Google 4.0 across 5,800+ reviews and ranked around #9 of 5,721 Vienna cafés on Restaurant Guru; Tripadvisor sits lower at 3.5, which is the usual split for this kind of place. Open Mon–Sat 07:00–22:00, closed Sundays. Opened 1880 and barely touched since: parquet, Thonet chairs, marble tables, newspapers on wooden rods, and two carambole billiard tables still in use. Ten minutes from Karlsplatz and the right pre-opera stop, because it does real food as well as cake — goulash, schnitzel, Sperl-Torte — for €10–20, and the standing-room evening does not include a dinner break. Read the Viennese coffee-house contract before you sit: one coffee buys the table for as long as you like, the waiter's brusqueness is the house style rather than a verdict on you, and you order by the drink's name — a Melange, a Großer Brauner, an Einspänner — not by the word coffee.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the stop's flat "closed Sundays" is now wrong — Sperl opens Sundays 10:00–20:00 for ten months of the year and shuts them only in July and August. — checked 2026-08-15

Wiener Staatsoper — Stehplatz (standing room)
sight · 195 min · €18 · Wiener Staatsoper, Opernring 2, Vienna
Wiener Staatsoper, Opernring 2, Vienna
€18 parterre, €15 gallery, €13 balcony — 567 standing places sold for every performance, and the budget lever this itinerary is built around. Two ways in: the batch released online at 10:00 on the day of the performance (maximum two per account, positions pre-assigned, no queueing — do this while you eat breakfast), or the separate Stehplatz cash desk on the Operngasse side of the building, opening 80 minutes before curtain, where in season people line up around two hours ahead. Parterre is the tier to want: central and just above stage height. Every railing position has a padded leaning rest and its own subtitle screen in English. Check the curtain time on the calendar before fixing this day — evening performances usually start 19:00 or 19:30 and a Wagner night can run past 23:00 on your feet. The house is on summer break from 1 July to 3 September 2026: in those weeks substitute the free opera films on Rathausplatz or a guided daytime tour of the building, which runs through July and August. No dress code applies to standing room, though most people smarten up.
NOTE · field note · prices and the 10:00 same-day online release the whole budget lever depends on are confirmed. — checked 2026-08-15
