Hanoi, Lan Hạ Bay, Huế, Hội An and Ho Chi Minh City in twelve days, across 1,700 km, with five bases and no night on a train. This plan flies the long hops and takes exactly one train, and that is the whole argument: the Reunification Express end to end is 32–36 hours of hard sitting for scenery you get in a three-hour slice, so the only rail leg here is Huế → Đà Nẵng over the Hải Vân Pass (about 150,000 VND, one of the great cheap train rides anywhere), while Hanoi → Huế and Đà Nẵng → Saigon are 75- and 95-minute flights that cost roughly 1–1.5 million VND booked ahead. Anyone selling you the full run as romance has not done it. Weather here is three different countries and one blanket line would be wrong: the north is wet May–September and cold and drizzly December–February; the centre is dry February–August and has a genuine typhoon window from roughly September to November, when Huế and Hội An flood and boats stop; the south is dry December–May. February to April is the only stretch that works for all three at once, which is why this is built for spring — travel it in October and the middle four days are the ones that break. Ha Long is the part of this trip you must research yourself. The bay's boats vary enormously, brands are rebranded and impersonated constantly, and after the Wonder Sea capsized on 19 July 2025 killing 39 people, Quảng Ninh made AIS tracking, VHF and automatic suspension above Force 6 winds mandatory — so this file names criteria and a price band, not a boat, and tells you how to check the one you pick. Prices are bands, not quotes: VND's big numbers go stale fast and every figure here was checked on 26 July 2026 at roughly 26,300 VND to the US dollar — treat them as ±20% and re-check the two flights and the cruise, which move most. Budget about 17,000,000 VND per person: 15,900,000 of listed stop costs, of which the Lan Hạ cruise alone is 4,700,000 and the two domestic flights another 2,700,000, plus roughly 1,100,000 of unitemised Grab rides, water and snacks. Lodging is extra. Entry: nearly all nationalities now use the 90-day e-visa — 25 USD single entry, 50 USD multiple, applied for at evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn, approved in about three working days. Vietnam has changed those rules three times since 2023; check the official portal yourself a month out and do not use the lookalike sites that outrank it.

Noi Bai International Airport to the Old Quarter by Grab
travel · 50 min · ₫200,000
Nội Bài is 30 km north of the centre and the ride is 45–60 minutes depending on the bridge traffic. Book a Grab car in the arrivals hall — 350,000–450,000 VND for the car, so roughly 200,000 VND each for two, fixed in the app before you get in. Take the app price over the men who approach you inside the terminal; the airport-taxi overcharge is Hanoi's one reliably annoying scam. There is also an airport bus (86) to the Old Quarter for about 45,000 VND that takes 70 minutes. Get an eSIM before you fly or buy a local SIM airside — Grab and offline maps are what make this whole trip easy, and you want data before you leave the terminal.

Two nights in the Old Quarter, which is the right base: everything on days 1 and 2 is either walkable or a 60,000 VND Grab away. Mã Mây is one block off the Tạ Hiện beer-corner noise, which matters more than the brochure suggests — ask for a room off the street. Any Hoàn Kiếm-district hotel works; the point is the district, not this address.

Ngoc Son Temple, Dinh Tien Hoang, Hoan Kiem Lake
The lake is Hanoi's front room and the 19th-century temple on its islet, reached over the red Thê Húc bridge, is the gentlest possible first stop after a flight. Entry is about 50,000 VND; open from 07:00, to 19:00 on weekdays and later at weekends. If you land on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday you have won something: the streets around the lake close to traffic from Friday evening and the whole rim becomes a pedestrian carnival until about 23:00. Prices drift here — assume 30,000–50,000 VND and carry small notes, because almost nothing at this price point takes a card.

Ta Hien Street, Hoan Kiem
Walk the 36 guild streets north from the lake — Hàng Bạc (silver), Hàng Mã (paper offerings, the most photogenic), Hàng Gai (silk) — and end at the Tạ Hiện junction, where plastic stools spill across the crossroads and bia hơi is poured for 15,000–25,000 VND a glass. Crossing the road: walk at a constant slow speed and do not stop; the scooters flow around you. Stopping is what causes accidents. On Friday–Sunday evenings the Old Quarter night market runs 3 km up Hàng Đào from 18:00 to about 23:00.

Cha Ca Thang Long, 19-21-31 Duong Thanh, Hoan Kiem
One dish, and it is the correct first dinner in Hanoi: turmeric-marinated fish finished at your table over a burner with a fistful of dill and spring onion, tipped over rice noodles with peanuts, herbs and mắm tôm (shrimp paste — ask for fish sauce instead if that is a step too far). Reckon 200,000–300,000 VND a head. It sits at 4.4 on Tripadvisor but ranks poorly within Hoàn Kiếm, which tells you the honest thing: this is a reliable, slightly touristed institution rather than a revelation, and it is the easiest place in the city to eat the dish without hunting. Cash is easiest.

Cafe Giang, 39 Nguyen Huu Huan, Hoan Kiem
Down an alley off Nguyễn Hữu Huân, up a staircase, on a stool eight inches off the floor: egg coffee (cà phê trứng) was invented in this family's shop in 1946 when milk was scarce, and it is egg yolk whipped with condensed milk over strong Vietnamese coffee — a warm custard you drink. About 35,000–45,000 VND. 4.6 on Tripadvisor over a deep review base. It is genuinely small and genuinely busy; if the stairs are full, Cafe Phố Cổ on Hàng Gai does a decent version with a rooftop over the lake.

A Michelin Bib Gourmand in the 2026 guide and the reason to set an alarm: one dish, phở bò, about 50,000–60,000 VND, served from roughly 06:00 until the pot runs out mid-morning and again briefly in the evening. You queue on the pavement, pay at the counter, carry your own bowl to a shared table. Come before 08:00 or don't bother — by 09:00 it is either gone or a 30-minute line. No English menu is needed because there is no menu.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, 2 Hung Vuong, Ba Dinh
Free, and the most tightly choreographed hour of the trip: you file past the embalmed body of Hồ Chí Minh in silence, hands out of pockets, no photographs, no bags or cameras (lockers at the entrance). Three closure rules will ruin your morning if you miss them. It is closed every Monday and Friday. It opens 07:30–10:30 April–October and 08:00–11:00 November–March, mornings only, with 30 extra minutes at weekends. And it shuts entirely for annual embalming maintenance every autumn — in 2026 that is 5 September to 3 November, which overlaps precisely with central Vietnam's typhoon window, so an autumn trip loses this and Hội An in the same breath. Knees and shoulders covered; no shorts or vests. If it is shut, Ba Đình Square and the complex around it are still open and free.
NOTE · field note · DATES MOVED: the 2026 annual embalming shutdown runs 4 September to 2 November with viewing resuming 3 November — the stop says '5 September to 3 November', which is a day late at the start and reads the reopening date… — checked 2026-08-15

Directly behind the mausoleum and on one ticket of roughly 40,000 VND: the mustard-yellow French Governor-General's palace (exterior only), the two-room teak stilt house Hồ Chí Minh actually lived in from 1958 rather than the palace, his carp pond, and the 11th-century One Pillar Pagoda on its single stone column. This half stays open when the mausoleum is closed, which makes it the fallback on Mondays, Fridays and through the autumn maintenance. Open 07:30–11:00 and again 13:30–16:00.

Vietnam's first university, founded 1070, and five walled courtyards of Confucian calm ten minutes by Grab from Ba Đình. The doctors' stelae — 82 stone tablets on stone tortoises naming every graduate from 1442 to 1779 — are the thing to slow down for. Entry is quoted anywhere between 30,000 and 70,000 VND depending on how recent the source is; budget 70,000 and be pleased if it is less. Open daily, roughly 08:00–17:00 in winter and 07:30–17:30 in summer. Cover your shoulders and knees.

Bún chả is Hanoi's lunch — grilled pork patties and belly in a warm sweet-sour fish-sauce broth, with cold rice noodles and a mountain of herbs you tear in yourself. This is the shop where Obama and Anthony Bourdain ate in 2016, and they have never let anyone forget it; the set is about 100,000–150,000 VND. Be clear-eyed: 4.1 on Tripadvisor and ranked around #305 in Hanoi. The bún chả is good, not transcendent, and you are partly paying for the glass case around the table. Bún Chả Đắc Kim on Hàng Mành is the better-cooked alternative if the queue here is out the door.

Hoa Lo Prison Relic, 1 Hoa Lo, Hoan Kiem
The French colonial prison that later held American pilots who nicknamed it the 'Hanoi Hilton', and the exhibition is unambiguously told from the Vietnamese side — the French-era cells, the guillotine and the 1945 sewer escape get the weight, the 1960s section reads as propaganda to most Western visitors. It is still the most affecting hour in Hanoi and worth entering knowing that. Open daily 08:00–17:00; entry is quoted at 30,000–50,000 VND. The audio guide (about 50,000 VND extra) is unusually good. There is also a night tour on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 19:00 — prices quoted between 100,000 and 300,000 VND depending on the format, book ahead through the relic's own site if you want it.

An 11th-century Red River Delta village art: lacquered puppets worked on submerged rods across a waist-deep pool, with a live band and đàn bầu on the side. Fifty minutes, eighteen scenes, no interval, no English — and it does not need any. Seats run 100,000 VND standard, 150,000 deluxe, 165,000–200,000 for the front balcony; add 20,000 VND if you want to photograph. Book online at nhahatmuaroithanglong.vn rather than through a hotel or a tout — it is the cheapest channel and the only one that guarantees a seat, and Saturday evenings need 2–3 days' notice. Seven shows daily Monday–Saturday, eight on Sunday. It is on the lake, five minutes from Ngọc Sơn.
