Warsaw for travelers who want the history straight: day one is the reconstructed Old Town — a city that was 85% rubble in 1945 and rebuilt so faithfully UNESCO listed the copy — with the Royal Castle as anchor; day two confronts the war head-on at the Warsaw Rising Museum and POLIN, ending on the Path of Remembrance through the former Ghetto; day three decompresses along the Royal Route to Łazienki Park before a Soviet-era finale atop the Palace of Culture. Watch the closure grid when you pin dates: the two day-2 museums both close Tuesdays, and the Royal Castle and Palace on the Isle both close Mondays — shuffle days rather than skip.

Day 1 — Old Town: royal Warsaw and the reconstruction storyOld Town: royal Warsaw and the reconstruction story

09:30
Castle Square and Sigismund's Column
sight · 30 min · free · Plac Zamkowy, Warsaw
Plac Zamkowy, Warsaw
Start where the Royal Route starts. The 1644 column and everything around it was dynamited in 1944 and rebuilt brick by brick from Bellotto's 18th-century paintings — the before/after photo boards on the square set up everything you'll see today.
10:00
Royal Castle in Warsaw
sight · 120 min · PLN 60 · Zamek Królewski, Plac Zamkowy 4, Warsaw
Zamek Królewski, Plac Zamkowy 4, Warsaw
Royal Route ticket 60 PLN with audioguide. Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00), closed Mondays; a limited free route runs Wednesdays but skips several apartments and tickets run out early. Rembrandts, the Canaletto room used to rebuild the city, and the crushed-and-recast royal insignia. Book online to skip the queue.
NOTE · field note · PRICE: the Royal Route is still 60 PLN (reduced 45), but the castle's own price page lists the AUDIOGUIDE AS A 10 PLN EXTRA — the stop sells it as '60 PLN with audioguide', so the real day-1 cost is 70 PLN. — checked 2026-08-15

12:30
Restauracja Zapiecek
food · 60 min · PLN 55 · Zapiecek, Świętojańska 13, Warsaw
Zapiecek, Świętojańska 13, Warsaw
The dependable Old Town pierogi stop — yes it's a chain, but the dumplings (meat, mushroom-cabbage, seasonal fruit) are hand-made and a full plate with compot runs ~45–60 PLN. No reservations; off-peak beats the 13:30 rush.
PLN 55
13:45
St. John's Archcathedral
sight · 30 min · free · Archikatedra św. Jana, Świętojańska 8, Warsaw
Archikatedra św. Jana, Świętojańska 8, Warsaw
Free entry to the nave (crypts a few PLN extra). Warsaw's oldest church, coronation site of the last Polish king, leveled in the Uprising — a Goliath tracked-mine's track segment is mounted on the outside wall as a scar kept on purpose. No visits during Mass.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the cathedral opens to visitors Mon–Sat 10:00–18:00 but only 15:00–19:00 ON SUNDAYS, and the stop schedules it at 13:45 — a day 1 that lands on a Sunday finds it shut, which the stop does not mention. — checked 2026-08-15
14:30
Old Town Market Square, the Mermaid, and the Barbican walk
sight · 75 min · free · Rynek Starego Miasta, Warsaw
Rynek Starego Miasta, Warsaw
Loop the market square (the Syrenka mermaid statue is the city's emblem), then follow the rebuilt city walls out through the 1548 Barbican to the New Town. Every 'medieval' brick here is post-1945 — the point of the walk. Free; the Museum of Warsaw on the square is a good rain fallback (closed Mondays).
16:00
Warsaw Uprising Monument at Krasiński Square
sight · 30 min · free · Pomnik Powstania Warszawskiego, Plac Krasińskich, Warsaw
Pomnik Powstania Warszawskiego, Plac Krasińskich, Warsaw
Insurgents emerging from a collapsing building and descending into the sewers — the canal exit depicted here was a real escape route from the Old Town in September 1944. Five minutes from the Barbican; primes you for tomorrow's Rising Museum. Free, open 24h.
18:30

food · 90 min · PLN 110 · Podwale 25, Warsawbook ahead
Podwale 25, Warsaw
Beer-hall Polish classics under the Old Town walls — pork knuckle, ribs, and pierogi in portions built for two, mains plus a beer ~100–130 PLN. Tripadvisor 4.4 with 24k+ reviews; live accordion most nights. Reserve or come before 19:00 — the courtyard fills fast.
NOTE · field note · RATING HAS SLIPPED TO THE FLOOR: the stop claims 'Tripadvisor 4.4'; it is 4.0 today across 2,879 reviews, which is the boundary of the warning band. — checked 2026-08-15

Day 2 — War and remembrance: the Rising, the Ghetto, POLINWar and remembrance: the Rising, the Ghetto, POLIN

09:30
Warsaw Rising Museum
sight · 180 min · PLN 35 · Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego, Grzybowska 79, Warsaw
Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego, Grzybowska 79, Warsaw
35 PLN; closed Tuesdays — do NOT put this day on a Tuesday (POLIN closes then too). Mon/Wed–Fri 08:00–18:00, weekends 10:00–18:00; free Thursdays but expect crowds. Dense, loud, deliberately overwhelming — the 3D flight over 1945's ruins and the sewer replica are the two things people carry out. Tram 22 or a 25-min walk from the center.
PLN 35
13:15
Bar Prasowy
food · 45 min · PLN 30 · Bar Mleczny Prasowy, Marszałkowska 10/16, Warsaw
Bar Mleczny Prasowy, Marszałkowska 10/16, Warsaw
A working milk bar since 1954 — the state-subsidized canteens that fed communist Poland. Order at the counter (pierogi, tomato soup, kotlet, kompot), full lunch under 35 PLN. Mon–Fri 09:00–20:00, weekends 11:00–19:00. Tram down Marszałkowska from the museum, ~15 min.
PLN 30
14:45
POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews
sight · 150 min · PLN 45 · POLIN, Anielewicza 6, Warsaw
POLIN, Anielewicza 6, Warsaw
45 PLN core exhibition; closed Tuesdays, free Thursdays. Open to 18:00 (Thu 20:00) — start by 15:00 to do the 1,000-year sweep justice; the painted Gwoździec synagogue roof is the centerpiece. Built on the rubble of the wartime Ghetto. Metro M1 to Ratusz Arsenał + 10-min walk, or tram.
NOTE · field note · HOURS: the stop says 'open to 18:00 (Thu 20:00)'. — checked 2026-08-15

17:30
Ghetto Heroes Monument
sight · 20 min · free · Pomnik Bohaterów Getta, Zamenhofa, Warsaw
Pomnik Bohaterów Getta, Zamenhofa, Warsaw
Directly facing POLIN's entrance — the 1948 monument to the 1943 Ghetto Uprising, built partly of stone Hitler's builders had stockpiled for a victory arch. Where Willy Brandt knelt in 1970. Free.
18:00
Path of Remembrance to the Umschlagplatz Monument
sight · 40 min · free · Pomnik Umschlagplatz, Stawki 10, Warsaw
Pomnik Umschlagplatz, Stawki 10, Warsaw
A 1-km walk north along Zamenhofa/Stawki past the black-granite memorial stones (Anielewicz, Korczak) to the white marble gate marking where 300,000 people were loaded onto trains to Treblinka in summer 1942. Quiet, outdoors, always open — the right way to end this day.
19:45
Hala Koszyki
food · 90 min · PLN 70
Hala Koszyki, Koszykowa 63, Warsaw
1909 market hall reborn as Warsaw's liveliest food hall — a dozen kitchens (Polish, ramen, seafood, Georgian) around a central bar, mains 40–80 PLN. Open daily to ~23:00, kitchens vary. Metro M1 Politechnika or tram; a deliberate change of register after the memorial walk.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
