A compact weekend that does Zurich properly without pretending it's cheap: day one walks the Bahnhofstrasse–Lindenhof–twin-minsters circuit with a Sprüngli stop and ends in fondue; day two pairs the Kunsthaus with a lake cruise and the Lindt Home of Chocolate in Kilchberg. Be warned on prices — this is one of Europe's most expensive cities and the CHF 245 total here already leans on smart picks (a CHF 8.50 street bratwurst for one lunch, pay-by-weight veggie buffet for the other); a sit-down meal with drinks can hit CHF 60+ without trying. Sights themselves are kind to the wallet: the churches are CHF 5 each and the lake and old town are free.

09:30
Bahnhofstrasse stroll
sight · 45 min · free · Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich
Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich
Walk the length of one of the world's priciest shopping streets from the main station toward Paradeplatz — window-shopping is free and the people-watching is the point. Banks' headquarters at Paradeplatz are the discreet heart of Swiss finance.
10:30
Confiserie Sprüngli Paradeplatz
food · 45 min · CHF 15 · Sprüngli, Bahnhofstrasse 21, Zurich
Sprüngli, Bahnhofstrasse 21, Zurich
The 1836 flagship. Order Luxemburgerli (mini macarons, the house invention) and a coffee at the ground-floor café-bar — a deliberately affordable taste of luxury Zurich, ~CHF 12–18. Open daily; the upstairs restaurant does a famous but pricier brunch.
CHF 15
11:30
Lindenhof and St. Peter's Church
sight · 45 min · free · Lindenhof, Zurich
Lindenhof, Zurich
Free. The Roman-era hilltop terrace is the classic old-town-and-river panorama; two minutes below, St. Peter's carries Europe's largest church clock face (8.64 m). Both sides of the Limmat from here on are pedestrian lanes.
12:45
Haus Hiltl
food · 75 min · CHF 35
Haus Hiltl, Sihlstrasse 28, Zurich
Guinness-certified oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world (1898). Pay-by-weight buffet (~CHF 5.30/100g) — a normal plate lands around CHF 30–40, which counts as good value here. Open daily; goes from buffet to club-ish bar in the evening.

14:30
Fraumünster
sight · 45 min · CHF 5
Fraumünster, Münsterhof, Zurich
CHF 5 (cash, TWINT or card at the door; includes the crypt museum and audio app; free with Zürich Card). The five Chagall choir windows (1970) are the reason to come — go before 15:00 for the best light through the south glass.

15:45
Grossmünster tower climb
sight · 60 min · CHF 5 · Grossmünster, Grossmünsterplatz, Zurich
Grossmünster, Grossmünsterplatz, Zurich
Church free; Karlsturm tower CHF 5 for the best rooftop-and-lake view in the old town (187 steps). Heads-up: renovation work in 2026–27 can limit access to parts of the church — check the day's notice at the door. Cross the Münsterbrücke from Fraumünster; afterwards drift north into the Niederdorf lanes for shop-and-gawk time before dinner.
NOTE · field note · HOURS — NEW AND UNDISCLOSED: FROM 3 AUGUST 2026 THE KARLSTURM IS CLOSED MONDAY TO THURSDAY AND OPEN ONLY FRIDAY TO SUNDAY. — checked 2026-08-15

Niederdorf's dedicated fondue parlour — nine cheese-fondue variants plus raclette, CHF 30–45 per person with bread only (sides cost extra; that's normal here). Touristy, cheerfully so, and reliably good. Reserve — walk-ins queue on weekends.

Collection ticket CHF 24; closed Mondays (Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00, Thu to 20:00); collection free on Wednesdays. Switzerland's biggest art museum across the Chipperfield extension — Giacometti, the Bührle Impressionists, Monet waterlilies. If your day 2 is a Monday, swap the days.

food · 45 min · CHF 13
Sternen Grill, Theaterstrasse 22, Zurich
Zurich's most famous sausage stand (since 1963), downhill from the Kunsthaus at Bellevue. St. Galler bratwurst with Gold-Bürli and the fierce house mustard, CHF 8.50 takeaway — eat it by the lake like everyone else. Open daily 10:30–23:45. The honest budget lunch in an expensive town.
NOTE · field note · PRICE IS BADLY STALE: the stop says 'CHF 8.50 takeaway' and budgets CHF 13. — checked 2026-08-15

Lindt Home of Chocolate, Schokoladenplatz 1, Kilchberg
CHF 17 with audio guide; open daily 10:00–19:00, last tour slot 17:30. BOOK ONLINE AHEAD — same-day tickets regularly sell out (the 9-metre chocolate fountain has that effect). The self-guided tour ends in an all-you-can-taste sampling hall; the factory outlet is dangerous for luggage weight.

Field log9/12 VENUES CLEAR · 3 FIELD NOTES✓ CHECKED 65 DAYS AGO

Every venue in this itinerary was checked against current public sources — opening hours, prices, closures — before it was published. Stops that aren't venues — transit legs, walks between them — aren't in the count.

How we check

Anything with a kitchen or a ticket gate is verified individually: the official site where one exists, plus recent traveler reviews. Public squares, parks and viewpoints get an existence check. A venue we can’t confirm is flagged below rather than quietly kept, and the whole itinerary is re-checked on a cadence — past 12 months without one, the checked claim is dropped and the date above stops being a promise.
